Young designer's dress to impress
Work by an up and coming Norwich designer who is collaborating with one of the most respected names in the business is the subject of a special exhibition in the city starting next week.
 The Dress features three different striking photographs of a couture garment by young designer Héléne Lecrinier. The piece itself was commissioned by Carol Lake, who has designed textiles for Lulu Guiness, Jasper Conran and Ted Baker and now has her own collection at Debenhams.
 Carol wanted a dress for the window display of Studio at Ninety-One, the interior design shop she opened a shop a year ago on Upper St Giles Street in Norwich, to catch the attention of passers-by and entice them in.
 She trusted Héléne with full creative freedom and free choice of design when she commissioned the piece last winter.
And now HĂ©lĂ©neâs design is the subject of The Dress, an exhibition of photographs taken by Tom Barrett of the modelled garment, which opens with a private view on Monday at Frankâs Bar in Bedford Street before its three-week public show.
 HĂ©lĂ©ne said that, as an admirer of Carolâs designs, she was honoured to have been commissioned for the piece and is now working on a non-traditional wedding dress for Carol.
 âI was really pleased to walk past the shop and see people admiring and commenting on the dress. But it was very rewarding to see it worn by the model during Tomâs photo shoot as I could finally see I had successfully reached my aims,â she said.
 âI wanted to create a garment which showed haute couture needle work and conveyed elegance and a strong feminine look.
 âI chose woollen voile to give a light ruched-up neck and shoulders line and a graceful drop. Similar cuff shapes were symbolic of wealth and royalty in the 16th century Renaissance.
 âI always liked this shape and I knew that it would catch people's eyes and would give the dress a majestic aspect. The technical structure with the flowing shape of the main body makes the dress exceptional.â
 Tom said: âThe idea of the shoot was to capture the elegance of the dress and model in a relaxed manner. The backdrop at STEW gallery was ideal as it gives the impression of a work in progress, something that was important as these images are not taken for a magazine but rather to show a stage in HĂ©lĂ©neâs career as a designer.â
The Dress, which is HĂ©lĂ©neâs first exhibition, will be followed by one for the wedding dress, building to a bigger exhibition of her work over a year next Autumn.
