How to prevent user to delete rows in Google Spreadsheet

This is actually pretty easy to set up despite Google Spreadsheets offer no direct way of doing it.

All you got to do is protect any column of the page setting range editing permissions:

1. Rightclick any column and select Protect Range. Let’s say you want to protect column G. Range should be G:G  (It can be even an empty column)

2. Click Set Permissions

3. Choose who can edit the protected column

That’s it! From now on the ones who are not allowed to edit the column can’t select Delete row from the Edit menu nor right clicking the row number :)

How to receive Rackspace support tickets notifications by SMS/Text message

If you work with Rackspace cloud servers, you’ll know that so far they don’t send support ticket notifications by text messages, which sucks if you need to get an important answer from them as soon as possible.

Through this simple workaround you can receive a text message every time a support ticket is created.

Step 1: Set Gmail as email address on you primary account

This is another Rackspace limitation. At this time only the primary address on the account will get ticket notifications (not happening on server alerts though), so we need to use a Gmail account or create a redirection from our current one to Gmail.

Personally I’ve created a new account for this specific purpose.

Step 2: Sign up for IFTTT

If you don’t know about IFTTT yet, don’t wait any longer! Go to http://ifttt.com now. It’s a free platform that communicate different services with each other automatically. In our case we’re going to send a SMS whenever an email is received. 

Step 3: Create a new receipt

Create a new receipt, choose Gmail as trigger channel and SMS as action channel. You’ll be asked to connect both channels to get them work. When finished, you’ll see something similar:

You might also set the “if” channel to be triggered only when receiving from a specific email account. In London based Rackspace accounts, [email protected] is the correct one, for U.S. and other regions, use [email protected].

IFTTT also allows to send push notifications to Pushbullet, Instapush, Pushover and more.

We are developing a cloud based ERP application in Nodejs since the last three months. I’d never worked with it before and I’m impressed by how easy is to use (I work with Javascript since forever). Love it!

Currently a bunch of users are manually migrating customers to the ERP in a semi-production environment but at the same time we need to make fixes and updates. The problem is that sessions get lost anytime node app is restarted, which is awkward for connected users.

After a little research I found this post that propose to use Redis to store session data and keep everything in memory. Fun!

Allow remote MySQL connections on OSX (Homebrew)

Today I've had to reinstall OSX and configure my development environment from scratch. Installed nginx, mysql and php-fpm via homebrew getting everything up and running quickly.

Then I realized that my teammates couldn't connect to my dev database. I added our local IP range to the users and privileges table but still didn't work.

Opening the mysql console and executing "show variables" I saw that bind_address was set to 127.0.0.1. This is set by default in the file ~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.mysql.mysqld.plist. I changed it to 0.0.0.0 and voilà, now I allow remote connections to my local database.

How to filter sanitize a float in php

The logical solution might be:

filter_var($float,FILTER_SANITIZE_NUMBER_FLOAT)

But that's actually wrong because decimals are ignored (?). The correct code includes the allow fraction flag to the filter_var function:

filter_var($float, FILTER_SANITIZE_NUMBER_FLOAT, FILTER_FLAG_ALLOW_FRACTION);

How to update foreign key value in mysql database

Sometimes it's necessary to break things a little bit in order to do needed changes. Imagine you got a bunch of mysql tables with foreign keys relationships and you have to change the actual foreign key value...

One solution is to temporarily disable foreign key checking and update the keys:

SET foreign_key_checks = 0; UPDATE table1 SET id='NEW' WHERE id='OLD'; UPDATE table2 SET foreign_key_id='NEW' WHERE foreign_key_id='OLD'; //more updates... SET foreign_key_checks = 1;

Note that it's mandatory to update every foreign keys so that relationships are not corrupted.
