“I can’t do this! I need something to help me relax. There has to be something here. I cannot last without it.”
“baby, you need to calm down. You need to breathe.”
“I need them.”
“I got rid of everything, Evie. I brought you here to get you clean and I intend on following through on that. Especially now.”
“Fuck! Where are my cigarettes then. Those can’t be as bad for the baby.”
“No.”
“I’m not ready for this! I need a drink.”
“I’m going to skip past the fact that there’s no alcohol in this house, straight to a reminder that you’re pregnant.”
“Stop it. We’re going to get through this, okay? We’re going to get you clean. I’m going to take care of you. No matter what. You just have to work with me, okay?”
“What do the words gold digging whore mean to you?”
“Evie.”
“He is going to hate me. Everyone is going to hate me.”
“Hey. Hey. Don’t talk like that. No one’s going to hate you, baby.”
She never paused to do the math. Alec was just a child a little younger than her. Eve never imagined that she would be in a similar position to his late wife. She never planned such a thing. “How do we even tell Alec?”
“We sit him down and we tell him.” Loic shrugged.
“For your image.” Eve was uncertain if it was the truth, but her mother had taught her what she needed to know. She was to be beautiful at all times and marry rich. A child was never part of the plan. He had said that he loved her before, but she always believed it was influenced by sex or a way for Loic to endear himself to her. “So you want this child? You meant for this to happen?” Eve knew that it was equally her alt that this happened, but she could barely think of anything beyond the fact that she was pregnant.
“I didn’t plan this, no. But I didn’t plan Alec, either... Willa got pregnant and she was seventeen when she got pregnant. We got married almost as soon as we found out, because I loved her. My image has been less than perfect for too long to be concerned about it now.” It was was hard to talk about Willa after so long. When was the last time he’d let her name pass his lips?
“Because I know what men like you do. You get a young, pretty thing on your arm and move onto the next when things get difficult.”
“Do you really think that if that was all you meant to me, that I’d have spent half an hour convincing you to come here as a front to get you clean? Don’t you think that if that was all you meant to me, I’d have been gone the first time you refused rehab? Evie, I love you.” He sighed, looking down for a moment before looking back at her. “I’m not going anywhere unless you want me to. And even then, you’re going to have a hard time getting rid of me.”
“You heard me. Go ahead and leave.”
“Why would I leave?”
“I’m pregnant, Loic.”
“Pregnant?”
“If the doctor is to be believed, Alec is going to be a big brother.”
“...What?” Was his brilliant reply.
“That’s exactly what it is.”
“What?”
“No.” She was a bit nervous as to how he would react. Eve would keep the child no matter what, but her mother would kill her should she come back to her as a single, pregnant woman. She could keep modeling until she starting showing, but after that, she had no idea what she would do.
“Baby, what is it?”
Eve shook her head, still finding it hard to believe what the doctor had said. She didn’t want to believe it. “It’s not withdrawal.”
“It’s not?” He frowned deeply.
“Baby? What did he say?” Loic’s hands hovered over her, his concern clear as day. “Are you okay?”
