Gwendoline loved the eighteenth arrondissement. It was nothing like the first, as its streets were narrow and the cobblestone streets were uneven and imperfect. Though she adored the sheer perfection of the areas touched by Haussmann, there was something organically beautiful about the small area behind La Basilisque du SacrĂ© Coeur de Montmarte. After a particularly long day at school, she wanted nothing but to sit down at her favorite cafĂ© and have something to drink. As she settled in at her usual table, she watched as tourists wandered and artists meandered. She barely noticed that someone had come to sit at the table next to hers. They were vaguely familiar; surely she didnât know their name, but she recognized that face. âDo you come here often?â she asked, offering a smile.
After a brief moment of indecisiveness, Loic finally settled on a small table situated at the back of the cafe. With his briefcase in one hand and a black coffee in the other, he roamed to the empty table and perched himself on itâs lone wooden stool. He had started to unbuckle his briefcase and reach for some of his work notes when he heard the soft whisperings of a womanâs voice interrupt him. He turned and glanced over to his right, his eyes meeting hers. âA couple times a week, ouais.â He returned the smile, "I donât believe weâve met before though.â Loic would be lying if he said he didnât recognize her; she was very familiar. In fact, he was certain that they must have crossed paths at least once or twice at the cafe, either him holding the door for her and vice versa, or from them both waiting at the same counter for their drinks, and therefore, never had the chance to formally introduce themselves to each other.Â
@samueldenisâ
Loic glanced aimlessly down at his watch as he waited for one of the elevator doors to open up and take him back to his floor. He had just gotten out of a meeting with his father (which ended up dragging out way longer than both parties had originally intended), and was hoping to find time to meet with his editor. With their magazineâs summer release just around the corner, there was still endless amounts of work that needed to be reviewed and discussed.Â
The soft beeping of the elevator doors that signalled itâs arrival rang in Loicâs ear. He swiftly entered the elevator, pressing the button to the third floor. As soon as the doors opened, he trudged his way through the small crowd of colleagues and hastily made his way over to Samuelâs assistant. âIs he in his office?â he asked, wanting to confirm before knocking on Samuelâs door and entering. âHey. You got a moment?â He leaned on the door frame, âYouâll never guess who I ran into earlier.âÂ
Giving him a playful warning look, meaning no checking your phone and emails during a work break - at least whilst youâre with me. As his eyes playfully widened, she placed her chin in her hand almost childishly, as if she had been caught out. Obviously this would be the reaction she were expecting from him  - after all, it were not like she attended most of the events his family invited her and her mother to. It would always be some sort of event, and sometimes even weekends away in the South. âTais -toi, Loic! I am not that bad.â She peered over next to him, so her head was close to his shoulder. âBesides, you are the one checking your work phone whilst on break!âÂ
Somewhat unsatisfied with his answer, seeing as it meant she were still torn, she took another sip from her coffee before quickly wiping her cream mustache away. âI mean, there would be no language barrier in MarrakechâŠwhere would you go?â
He quickly skimmed the first few lines of his emails, satisfied with his conclusion that nothing in the folder contained anything too important, before pressing the side of his phone and making the screen go black. âShould I have you confiscate it then?â he teased, his lips pressing into a mischievous smile while their eyes met. Just because he was on break didnât mean that the entire world came to a breaking halt too.Â
He turned towards her, his mind seeking an answer to her unexpected question. He let in a deep breath and felt his shoulders begin to rise and shrug, âProbably Marrakech. Like you said, no language barrier. It might just be a preference but Iâd rather be somewhere where I feel like I have some control. But it doesnât matter what I think. Here...â he reached for the travel pamphlet once again, âIndulge me for a second and close your eyes.â
âI can speak french, by the way,â he pipped in, not wanting to hear anymore of his frustration. âClients know who I am, but Iâm still trying to get them to want me rather than them wanting me to want them.â
âI wasnât really concerned if you could.â he retorted back nonchalantly. He crossed his arms, âDo you have any headshots on you?âÂ
â &;  â Merde â  Does the phone in rice thing really work or is it just a myth? â
âNever tried it. Iâm not a big fan of experiments. Iâd just buy a new phone; itâs easier and quicker.â
âMotherâs Day comes three times a year for me.â
âAnd here I thought having to celebrate one Motherâs Day was hard enough.â
There was a small pause but then her eyebrow raised, forming a half interested half amused expression. Business rumors were no different than common gossip, they traveled fast. âLet us speak openlyâ she mused, âWe are not newbies in the business. Why do I need your help?â
âBecause you want to expand your companyâs reach internationally and I want to increase my magazineâs name and sales. Itâs a win-win, really.â
âUnless, of course, youâre content with where you are now.â he paused for a brief second, âIn just France.â
âI usually get paid a couple hundred euro. But itâs up to you.â
âJesus fucking Christ.â he mumbled under his breath in French. âAre you even that well known? How much exposure have you gotten? And be honest.â
She shook her head, brushing the hair from her face. âI donât know. I just-,â Andrea sighed. âWe just had so much difficulty with conceiving Xarles. I just feel like Iâm asking for too much.âÂ
âDo you know that this is something Holden wants? Because if it is, then none of you should be thinking that youâre asking for too much.â He brought a hand to her shoulder and gave her a reassuring squeeze. âYou shouldnât feel guilty for wanting another baby. You donât deserve to feel like that.âÂ
âYou do realize I could just think your life is boring, right?â He asked, raisnig an eyebrow. âI mean all you do is work. When was the last time you did something fun? Let loose? Something that didnât involve the company? When was the last time you got laid, L?
Loic shook his head, âHas to be a reason for you to think that.â He mirrored his twinâs raised eyebrow, âTrust me, I know how to let loose and have a good time. Iâm just more discrete about it. I donât parade myself around town like somebody I know. I enjoy my pleasures in private. And relax; you donât need to worry about the last time I got laid.â
âIf you pay me, sure.â
âObviously weâd pay you.â
âName your price.â
A quick glance was shot at her watch. 1.30 PM. Yes it was her lunch break but she didnât mind at all talking business. âI have an hourâ she smiled.
âWhatâs the matter of discussion?â
He follows her gaze, noting her swift glimpse to her wrist. This prompted him to make his pitch quickly. âRumour has it youâre looking to expand your brand. I want to help you do that.â
âYou know Iâm a fucking model, right?â
âIs this you offering?â
Andrea shook her head. ââŠWeâre trying.Though, sometimes I feel like we shouldnât be.â
He keeps his gaze locked on her, his eyes filled with concern. âWhy do you think that?â
â pinky promise or Iâm not writing anything.
âYeah, Iâm not going to do that. Iâm your boss, remember?â he answered, his tone dripping with a hint of both playfulness and amusement, âYouâre just going to have to take my word for it.â
