Baltic mythology: Snakes - guardians of hidden treasures
Žalčiai (grass snakes) and gyvatės (snakes) are known as guardians of treasures hidden in the vaults. Treasures include a variety of gold, silver, pearls, etc. Some of them are cursed. Usually snakes use them as gifts to poor, oppressed people or the ones who help them. If you save a snake’s life chances are you might get a magical in return.
The legend says that you might stumble upon a nest of žalčiai. If one of them has a crown it means that it is actually a cursed treasure. If you throw a ball at the žalčiai nest it turns into gold. And if you manage to get a hold of the crown of žalčiai or gyvatės king - you will find the way to hidden treasures.
During Rasos (Midsummer) people in the Baltic lands look for the blossom of fern. It is said that gyvatės protect it because the said blossom is actually related to the hidden treasure and the one who finds the blossom will find the way to it. Sometimes the fern blossom is protected by raganos (Baltic witches) who turn themselves into gyvatės.
Weird and Awesome Skulls!
I figured we need a masterpost of some of the best weird, cool skulls out there for all the bone collectors. So here are some of my favorites:
Giant Anteaters and their tube faces
Echidnas
Armadillo Lizard (aka smol dragon)
Platypus (still ridiculous even in death)
Toucans! Once again birds taking the cake in weirdness
Black Rayed Softshell Turtles (and several other softshells they’re all cute)
Tapirs
And elephants, for that matter. All animals with trunks, really.
Hyenas! Lookit those chompers
Narwhals!
Hippos
Hornbills
Parrotfish! (This skull was prepped by http://skullandbone.tumblr.com/)
And the Pacu! (from flickr, here https://www.flickr.com/photos/32499494@N05/)
That’s all I have time for but I might do another one of these later!
