“Baby, I know chaos is probably ensuing again in the city, but hear me out—” She paused, glancing over to the careless stack of books which held a plethora of baby names. “Otto or Florian should definitely be added to the list of names we already have.”

                    “Alright, alright, slow down,” a grin swathed freckled countenance, holding out his hands as if in mock protest, “Just let me snag a couple of drinks and make my appearance known, then you can take advantage of me later.” Julian shook his head as if in spurious regret to instigating Lola, offering a click of his tongue as the next reel of syllables fell from rosebud lips. “You have no shame. You can’t pull the baby card whenever you want to get what you want.” A hand came up in tandem as if out of reprimand to her cause, “Doesn’t work that way and it never will.” Mirth embellished hues could reveal just how false his own protest could be, connecting their lips for the briefest span of a moment, “You’re a vision, Carrington.” 

“You’re telling me to slow down? Your pregnant girlfriend?” The exasperation that fell from her lips was nonetheless mere dramatics, yet she knew that he would always have a soft spot for her in her current state. “Please, you do not need to make your appearance known. You’re a lowly deputy who belongs to a family of glorified dog hunters. I’m the Carrington heir, so really, you should’ve stayed at home, baby.” She scoffed slightly, yet of course, all in good jest. “You’re a liar, you know that?” Lola grabbed his hand, reeling him closer once more and grinning as their lips connected. “You think? I don’t look ugly or anything? Maternity dresses are definitely.... difficult, especially since I look like a hot air balloon now.” She groaned against his shoulder, still holding onto him despite the inevitable obstacle between them. “... I should’ve texted you.”

                    “Oh, sure, but I’m not even worth a text or a call? Here I thought those pregnancy hormones would have had you on high alert with me walking around in a suit,” syllables fell from his lips in a mockingly arrogant manner, reeling her close as he managed to slowly guide them through the room with no proper end path in mind; it was merely the actuality of her presence that was enough. “Yeah, well,” arm came up in tandem as if to check his wrist watch, obsidian hues flitting towards her olive visage once more, “If you just waited twenty more minutes that would have been a reality, miss impatient.” 

“They are on high alert. Like, seriously, when you dress well I’m ready for my soul to leave my body.” She had no intentions of feeding his ego, merely giving him the courtesy of warning him that there was no path that night that didn’t end up with her all over him. Lola stopped in her tracks, huffing, almost as though she had yet to grow out of that princess complex she had grasped onto throughout her entire life. “Juju—” She moaned, knowing he was far more likely to sway towards whatever she desired in her current state. Hand stayed on his jaw, reeling him closer slightly with a pout. “Are you really telling me that I’m not serving looks right now with our son? But he’s so happy to see you. You can just tell.”

                    “He-ey,” Julian’s brows raised at the familiar sight of his fairly pregnant girlfriend, scooping an arm around her with the shake of his head. “You know when we agreed for you to stay home and that I’d only be gone at this thing for an hour I thought that was the general consensus.” Brow was raised as if in challenging regard, hand inherently securing around her belly. The closer her due date was, the more worry Julian seemed to suffer from. 

“Baby, you agreed. I just kind of nodded along.” She shrugged, her nonchalant matter almost terrifying for a mother-to-be. Regardless, a warm smile emanated across her lips, never tiring of how protective her boyfriend was throughout the duration of her pregnancy. Lola brought a hand up to his jaw, biting her lip in an attempt to not consistently compliment him on how just how good he looked in a suit. "Worst case scenario and we’re both home? That kind of sounds like heaven.” She grinned, pulling him closer.

“What do you buy someone that you’re dating for Christmas? I don’t really do that sort of thing . “ He explained before shaking his head. “Both the dating and the buying people thing’s. I just don’t want to go into anymore shops till 2020” Quinn explained. It was probably the most he’d said to anyone all day, but he was getting frustrated. He had been in several different shops and came out of it with nothing except a headache and a dislike of the Holiday spirit. 

“Lingerie, obviously. Go big or go home.” The Carrington advised, shrugging lightly. “She’ll love it. Wait, that’s totally me assuming it’s a she. Alright, safe bet is handcuffs.”

“This part of town isn’t a good place to be at this time of night,” dark eyes scanning over the others figure and habitually prepared himself for the worst. The night brought out a different part of his senses, but he was still vulnerable in the dark. It was clear that the witch was dressed for work, investigative equipment barely visible to the untrained eye, but not enough that it would be a dead give away, “Live close by?”

“I think I’m fine, thanks.” The Carrington carried far too much pride, eyes narrowed while glancing at the other. “Okay— ew, you weirdo. I’m not telling you where I live. Seriously, if you’re going to be a creep at least do a good job with it. You can’t murder me here, my boyfriend’s a deputy at the NYPD. Also, I actually refuse to die in this part of town.”

Ghost looked at the woman with a smug smile on his face, but it quickly fell when she turned his way and he noticed the baby bump. He hadn’t noticed it before, he swore! It’s not like he had any particular sympathy for pregnant women – he feared them, really. He had encountered a few of them before. “I’m drinking coffee! I can’t do anything!” He offered, raising his hands up a little. “You can’t even have caffeine, can you?” He turned to the barista, then, who also looked very torn. “Come on, it’s just leaves with hot water, just make the impregnated woman some tea.”

“No, I can’t have caffeine. Obviously.” She remarked, although she felt a slight twinge of regret for snapping at the stranger. A rarity, of course; yet the pregnancy made her feel somewhat more sensitive than usual. “Whatever. I’ll just go to Starbucks. They won’t treat me like this.” She mumbled, attempting to hide her anger again. “If they don’t serve me— you’re going on my hit list.”

“No need to look at me like that,” Emrys commented as he emerged from the brambles holding a cat out in front of him. Emrys often rescued cats he found on the streets. He did his best to recuse all animals, but he had always been particularly fond of cats. Unfortunately, not all cats wanted to be rescued or realised that Emrys was only trying to help. “If this cat had bitten and scratched you as many times as it has me you’d be holding them like this too.” The cat had been badly tangled in the brambles, and Emrys had received numerous injuries whilst trying to free the stray. 

“Get that thing away from me.” She stepped back quickly, crossing her arms. “I’m not going to be infected by a stray cat. Who knows what diseases it has?” The Carrington grimaced, crossing her arms, not at all concerned about his injuries.

As much as Kalani loved Starbucks – really, he visited one of their shops five times a day, probably –, it wasn’t real coffee. It was the fast-food american version of it, and as much as it scratched his itch for caffeine, it wasn’t anywhere near the actual good stuff he used to have back home. Luckily for him, he found a trashy small grungy coffee shop near his place in the Upper East Side, where coffee was good and everyone had a thick accent, and the trip there was always worth it. This time he slipped in, as they were closing down, to get his last shot of espresso for the night. A cup of joe before bed never hurt anyone.

Someone walked in just behind him and he was grabbing his cup of coffee when he heard the barista tell the next customer: sorry, that was our last for the day, we’re closed now. Ghost snickered as he cradled his cup close and sipped from it. It tasted like victory. “Oops! My bad. Better luck to you tomorrow.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?” Lola snared, the now large bump on her stomach a tell-tale sign that it was within anybody’s best interest to not anger her. “Can you not see I’m with child? I need my peppermint tea. I’ll probably, like, die without it. God, you—” She clenched her jaw out of frustration, remembering that stress was awful for her unborn child.

“Thanks so much for meeting me for lunch.” Cali greeted the other, a smile appearing just for them. She was in a good mood, despite everything. She died for some food and the company. And a lunch in the middle of bloody New York was obviously the best choice. She hadn’t had the time to do groceries anyway. “So as you might know, Dom and I are getting married, and I would like to invite you – March ninth , save the date!” 

“That’s amazing, oh my God. Oh my God. An actual wedding. That’s adorable.” Lola felt herself to be truly elated for her boyfriend’s sister. She pulled Calypso into a hug, smiling widely. “Please let me help you with literally everything. I was basically born for this. Like, I didn’t come to play. I’ve got a book of collages to help too.”

         A laugh stumbled past freckled countenance, mouth slightly agape at just how unraveled Lola seemed to be in the heat of the moment; hues grazing over olive visage with a festered belief of adoration. Julian himself was near beaming with exaltation, the veneration that seeped from him in nod to how cute Lola looked when such inquietude dared to get the best of her. “You definitely couldn’t handle twins,” a teasingly stern look swathed his expression, shaking his head in further confirmation of such truth, “But, hey — it’s a nice thought, I’ll have to give you that, babe.” Perhaps a small part of him could bask at the impression of twins, yet it was a milestone many people could merely envision but never vie to truly will for, thumb grazing over hers as they sat in wait. “Clearly I didn’t fall in love with your niceness,” he chided, a verbal nudge to her mood swings that hardly held any firm truth. 

“Asshole.” Lola muttered under her breath, her playful tone being a tell-tale sign about just how much she loved him — even if she expressed profanities far too often. She smiled at his words, before rolling her eyes—— his confession would never fail to stun her, even in the most nerve-racking of moments. “What did you fall in love with, then?” A subtle hint at how she wanted to be reminded, yet also hoping he knew just why she fell in love with him also. The next few moments were far too fast for her to process, her own mind riddled with uncertainties and trepidation. She had already warned the doctor that she may have wanted the sex to be kept a surprise, yet before he delivered the envelope she just knew. She was far too impatient to wait. The envelope was delivered to her and Lola almost snatched it away, brunette hair falling in front of her face before gently being brushed back behind her ear. “Let’s open it together.” She sat upright, leaning closer towards him with the envelope almost opened. After swiftly taking the soft sheet of paper out, a smile instantly grew on her face. The purest display of emotion she would gamble she had ever experienced in her entire lifespan. Pure joy coursed through her veins as Lola experienced excitement in its most splendid form. She grabbed her boyfriend, tugging him closer to pull him into a hug, unable to say anything for the briefest of moments.

          Julian could easily recognize the fact that Lola’s mind had already surpassed the back and forth range of working a mile a minute; her nerves enough to cloud them both in whatever stupor such essence thus created. It was a vertiginous possibility, an amalgamation of elation seeping its way beneath the apprehension that clouded his girlfriend. All the same, it proved to balance them out, Julian’s own mettle near waning beneath such a silly prediction as finding out the sex of their very own child. “I love you, too,” grin was smeared across the mien, offering a supportive squeeze of her hand in tandem, “If it’s a girl though… I dunno where that’d leave us…” click of his tongue was provided, obsidian hues alight with that teasing sense that proved he hardly meant such jest. 

It felt as though the reality of their predicament had suddenly reached its zenith, suddenly instilling Lola with a certain mixture of fear and excitement. His ability to make her laugh anywhere and anytime proved to be a strength yet once again, her lips spreading into a wide grin. “Do you know how adorable a little girl would be? Especially ours? I mean, to be honest, a boy would be kind of really adorable too. Oh my god, what if it’s like—— twins? Then we could get one of each. Wait, no, bad idea. And a dumb one.” She shook her head at the thought, words tripping over her tongue in a spur of nervousness. Lola brought his hand up to her lips, kissing the back of his hand softly on a whim, smiling over at him. “I didn’t realise how nervous I was——” It wasn’t a confession easily made, almost embarrassed to let him know. “I’m really happy we got here, baby. Wow, this is literally the nicest I’ll ever be. I hope you savour it.”

It was now a matter of waiting — a matter of patience, of hope. The halfway mark had nowhere near been easy, yet Lola could only be grateful that Julian had never once let her down throughout it all. The woman had performed the ultrasound, now outside of the room to scan the results whilst Lola was left lying back, unsure of how to articulate any of her thoughts. Hand intertwined with his, she finally broke through her self-induced silence, glancing over at him. “I thought about wanting to keep it a surprise, but then I remembered it was me and that it was physically impossible. Honestly, Julian—— I’m excited.” She squeezed his hand gently, still unable to convey how nervous she truly was. Yet, she knew that he knew. He always understood her. “— I love you, you know.”

“Ohhhhh, a burger… One that’s extra greasy or just one with a leaf of lettuce on it?” Now he was in the mood for a burger, and it was her fault. “At what place?” 

“Okay, gross. I would rather swim in the blood rain than eat a greasy burger.” She grimaced at the thought, hyper cautious about what would affect her unborn child. “A healthy one.”

“Well I did tell you that you shouldn’t be out in the first place, not in this state.”, Anais’ raised an eyebrow at the witch as she fiddled with the purse, the keys to her flat (of course) being at the very bottom of it, “Honestly, that’s a pretty tame reaction from you, I mean given the severity that is a ruined Chanel bag. I would’ve flipped already.” Finally, having located the key, they were on their way inside and Anais turned around to offer Lola some help with the coat, “I’ll buy you and the baby brand new matching ones, how about that?”

“Classic. Blame the poor pregnant woman.” She pouted, leaning against the wall beside the threshold. “I just can’t stay home. I’m literally going to go crazy if I do.” Lola mused aloud, although she knew that Anais’ words, and Julian’s, and just about everybody else did ring with some truth. She wasn’t just looking after herself anymore, no matter how reckless she wanted to be. “Oh, I did flip. But stress is really bad for the baby, so I had to stop flipping out after a bit. I’ll probably start screaming about it again after they’re born.” She walked into her apartment, a smile now adorning her face. “Aw, that’d be so cute. Thanks. I probably can’t shower it in all of that stuff just yet. Tell me about you. How’s everything? You know I want the tea.”
