On any particular school day, complaining could be heard from the Noah family dining room as Road worked on homework. “There can’t be one single person in the world that likes homework, so why do they keep assigning it?” she muttered as she opened her school books. Upon inspection of what the teacher had assigned that day, the eldest Noah frowned, “You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m going to have math homework coming out of my ears before this is over.”
Road studied the equations on the page before tossing the book over her shoulder with a sigh. She picked up her history homework and skimmed though the pages. Sure, history was easier but there were twice as many problems which meant twice as much thinking. “No way in hell.” She tossed that over her shoulder too.
The only assignment left was English, which was a daunting task in itself. So much reading, so many questions to answer, so little patience. “Where’s family when you need them to help with your school work?” She whined as she laid her head on her book in defeat.
The house was particularly empty. Sheril was off on a business trip and had taken Wisely with him to show him the ropes, and Tricia had caught a nasty cold that prevented her from leaving her room for an extended period of time. Many would call the emptiness their absence left in the large mansion eerie: it wasn’t meant to be inhabited by so little, after all. Tyki, however, called it bliss. His stay at the Kamelot mansion was much more pleasant if he didn’t have to deal with neither his clingy brother and mind reading nephew nor have to be careful not to slip into a less than well-mannered act.
With hands shoved casually into pockets, the Noah was on his way to the kitchen to fetch himself a snack, but inaudible whining had him take a slight detour. As he stuck his head into the dining room, Tyki found himself surprised by a messy dining table and an equally messy floor, books and papers and pencils scattered carelessly.
“ What are you doing? ” Tyki questioned as he enters the room fully, but as he approached the table and saw Road’s frame sprawled across one of her textbooks, he was quick to connect the dots. He came to a standstill with a start, a bead of sweat rolling down his temple as his brain almost audibly creaked trying to come up with an excuse to get out of helping her. Or rather, doing it for her…
“What am I doing?” Road asked as she picked herself up from her books to look at Tyki. She studied him with a grin, what perfect timing for her favorite uncle to show up. “Oh nothing, nothing. A better question would be what are you doing? Surely you’re not busy right now.”
Road was good at many things, homework not being one of them. However, in the art of getting what she wants, she was the master. The eldest Noah mustered up the sweetest smile she could and pointed at the chair next to her, “Why don’t you take a seat? You look awfully bored at the moment.”
Sure, Road could do her own work if she wanted but why would you want to when you can trick your family into doing it for you? “Say Tyki, you wouldn’t mind helping me out with my homework would you? It’s just that there’s so much of it and Lord Millennium wanted my help today.”
