alright, i'll be the one to say it. ao3 and tumblr becoming "mainstream" did so much damage to the community and the writers. i have seen loads of videos and posts about:
1. people hating on writers and fics. writing is something we do for free and for fun. if you stumble upon a fanfic that isn't necessarily your cup of tea or you just don't like, scroll. dont read it. literally leave their page. you don't know if this could be the author's first work that they're so excited about, you dont know if the language they're writing in isn't their first language, you dont know that the writer could be a literal teen and loads of other reasons. fanfictions don't HAVE to be perfect. you write what you want to write because we do it for fun and enjoyment and we want to share that to the world. seriously, what is the wrong with that?..
2. x reader consumers getting WAY too entitled. the number of tiktoks i've seen that say "i run a strict program when it comes to reading fanfics." girl you aint running shit. this is FAN FICTION you're reading. F A N F I C T I O N. there is no denying that most fanfiction writes are beyond talented but just because you read one fanfic that exceeds your expectations doesn't give you the right to talk down on others that don't. people have their own personal writing style, their way of doing things and you talking shit on that isn't right.
at the end of the day, we are all humans, reading and writing is what we do and what we're meant to do. and for you to talk shit about a person WRITING is so insane. we are humans. not some robots that you can tell what to do so you can consume it.
i've seen so so many authors take down their fanfics and losing all motivation to write because of a hate comment. DONT LIKE DONT READ‼️
and to every author reading this, this community values your work and your contribution. we love u and, please, never let anyone's negative words have an effect on you.
Louder for the people in the back! (Added colors to help grab attention so the awareness can spread a bit more easily. Btw, any of y'all drink water yet? Not soda, not coffee, not the gamer fuel, actual water.)
This is kinda another reason why I stopped writing... Because I was starting to get scared that I would start getting harassed for not completing a request in the expected yet never specified time frame... I may have done this a few times myself as a requester in the past but I don't recall if I was actually harassing the other writer's Or if I was simply trying to send a reminder of my request a week after sending it, then sending another reminder after two more weeks, then forgetting about my request completely and then moving on...
It's also stuff like this that made me request things less and less because I felt like I was slowly starting to contribute to a problem that likely had nothing to do with me... It's why I first started adding the phrase "You don't have to if you don't want to." to each of my requests... Because for me? That phrase was me trying to signal the other writer's that I was trying to give them a chance to take a break and take care of themselves... How long have requesters been pushing writer's to the point that writing feels more like a chore than back when they were first writing for fun...?
Do all requesters know that writer's have lives outside of writing what other's want...? Can a writer not make something they want themselves and enjoy what they made without almost immediately seeing someone make a request...?
I'm not saying that people should stop requesting things, full stop/cold turkey. No. What I'm trying to say is that maybe we should start spreading out the time between each request we send out. And hey, no time like the present to write notes about your request and then slowly starting to write your own fanfic about it, no?
Even if you think you aren't good at writing, at least give it a shot. Believe me, school had me hate writing until I started writing what I wanted instead of what others wanted. All it took was a little idea from a bit of art or something that I was reading or looking at to spark the urge to write. And you don't need paper and pencil to write your stories anymore unless you want to go down that route. All you need is a note app or something and then somewhere where you can slowly edit and brainstorm with friendly people who share your ideas and want to try and contribute to your ideas without trying to force their own ideas via requests.
Sorry for the rant, hope this helps get my POV across.
I read ur rant don't be sorry I understand what ur saying ♡
