We’re thrilled and a little bit proud to announce that a book that we’ve been working on for the past year is now out in the world!

Making Books by the London Centre for Book Arts (Simon Goode and Ira Yonemura) is a step-by-step guide to creating books by hand at home based on our popular workshops. Published by Pavilion, we were lucky enough to work with Yuki Sugiura on photos, Jay Cover on illustrations, and Makoto Yamada on the design.

You can pick up a copy of the book at our shop or your local bookshop!

In early July we launched our Kickstarter campaign to expand and improve the London Centre for Book Arts to meet the needs of our members and community. Since then, we have been surprised and overwhelmed by the response from friends, neighbours, and complete strangers from all over the world. In the end, we exceed our goal of £18,000 by more than £6,000!!

To celebrate and thank everyone for their support, we’re hosting a Summer Open Studio on Sat 12 August. Hope you can join us!

After months of planning and organising (longer than we care to admit), we're excited to announce that today is the launch of the very first Kickstarter campaign by the London Centre for Book Arts.

We've recently taken on a lease of a new studio in Britannia Works to turn into a dedicated project space and library. Along with the new studio, we have plans for much needed improvements in the existing studio to accommodate the needs of our members and the community.

Donations will go directly towards:

refurbishment of the new & existing studio space

moving, cataloguing, and expanding our reference library

building a new space dedicated to reprographics and publishing

repair or replacement of key equipment.

We've got lots of rewards, including Making Books: a guide to creating hand-crafted books by the London Centre for Book Arts to be launched in August from Pavilion Books (you'll definitely be hearing more about this soon) – with more rewards to be announced.

Please take a look, and even if you can't contribute, it would be great help if you could spread the word to your friends. Every little bit helps!

Next Mending and Sewing Circle is this Wed night from 6–9pm at LCBA. Come share and learn mending and hand-sewing skills and have a chat. Drop-ins welcome. The image above is from Nui Project, a long-running sewing project for people diagnosed with a variety of different cognitive, behavioral and developmental disorders or mental illness based in Kagoshima, Japan. Mending and Sewing Circle is organised by studio member Sam Whetton.

London Centre for Book Arts will be at this year's Offprint London. Held over three days at Tate Modern, the fair will feature more than 140 independent and experimental publishers of contemporary art, photography and graphic design.

Along with items from the LCBA shop and books from our publisher-in-residence Publication Studio London, we will be showcasing our new publishing and distribution project, A6 BOOKS. Hope to see you there!

Come join us Wednesday 24 May from 6 to 9pm for a Mending and Sewing Circle at the London Centre for Book Arts. Bring along a garment that needs fixing, a little hand sewing project or just come along empty handed. We will have a supply of threads, needles, pins, snips, unpickers, scrap fabric for patching, a small collection of buttons and a limited amount of yarn for darning.

Some new books in the shop including Under the Radar: Underground Zines and Self-Publications 1965–1975 edited by  Jan-Frederik Bandel, Annette Gilbert, Tania Prill. A gorgeous new book from Spector Books presenting underground publications that came out of West Germany from a period that saw a liberalization of publishing practices.

From Sleepwalking to Sleepwalking by Bertie Marshall published by Publication Studio London in 2016. Louisa Bailey who runs PS London along with LUMINOUS BOOKS will be joining us again in May for another day of Advice Sessions at LCBA. A chance to ask questions and get feedback on an artist book or publishing project.
