Programs and Software!
Alright, so personally I use the free version of anything I find. I know there are more and probably better programs out there.
I use three programs. Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and Adobe Reader (free version). All of them have worked well enough, or to a level that I am satisfied and comfortable with.
The process I have is copy -> paste to word (to keep text styles and such) -> paste back to google docs -> do any formatting I need to on there -> file as pdf and open in adobe reader (free version) -> do book layout formatting there -> print.
This is very simplified and doesn't include editing and settings I use.
I started bookbinding yesterday. Damb I gotta say it's amazing so far. Am I crap at it? Well yeah but it's my first time so it's expected. Definitely a hobby I'm going to keep though.
Managed to smash out one last book of 2020. It fought me a fair bit but ended up pretty nice.
This is a Critical Role fic featuring a VERY rare novel length Caduceus/Caleb ship. It ended up being a hefty boi. Its written by @delible-ink and here's a link to check it out!
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
I used some motifs that are both canon for the characters and heavily used in the story itself which to be honest when a story is heavy on imagery for a specific theme or motif like this one was with sunflowers and beetles and so on it makes it really easy from an artistic formatting point to pretty up a book and pick colors, themes and images to include directly in the formatting. Its a blessing.
Here's to more books in 2021!
Milwaukee Handicraft Monday
This past Thursday I held the final in-person session of my course History of Books & Printing before going into COVID-19 response mode. This session was on the history of Western bookbinding. To reinforce the session with a little body-learning, we engaged in a simple binding workshop, much like the women in these photographs making books in the late 1930/early 1940s for the Milwaukee Handicraft Project. Clearly, social distancing was not an issue for them at the time.
“In the early days of the project, the items crafted by MHP were driven by local demand. Bookbinding, for example, began as a way to produce scrapbooks for a variety of institutions including the Milwaukee County House of Correction. One of the most notable bindings created was that done for a songbook called Come and Sing, written by elementary students at the Milwaukee State Teachers College training school. Eventually, the MHP began to receive orders for their items from across the United States." All of the illustrations were created by Milwaukee cartoonist and illustrator Ludwig John Cinatl Jr., who would have been in his mid-20s at the time. You can read more about the history of the Wisconsin Arts Project and the Milwaukee Handicraft Project in this essay here.
The original photographs are found in box 3, folder 7 of the Elsa Emile Ulbricht Papers, 1905-1978 (UWM Manuscript Collection 59). Come and Sing is from our Historical Curriculum Collection.
The Wisconsin Arts Projects of the WPA digital collection was made possible with generous financial support provided by The Chipstone Foundation.
