You do not need to tell fan artists or fanfic writers what you did not like about their work.

Been seeing a real rise in people being unnecessarily critical of fan works recently and it’s really annoying.

Especially on TikTok, where I think a lot of people are new to fandom spaces and etiquette. Lots of people dropping by the comments to tell artists what they dislike about their fan art. I’ve also seen it on here too. People telling writers what they don’t like about their fan fictions.

These complaints are nearly always a matter of preference. Often the complaint is that the fan work conflicts with their personal head canons that they have convinced themselves is canon. With fan fictions people will like the story as a whole and then complain about an update because it wasn’t what they wanted.

This is not media to critique. It is work people make for free because they like something and want to share their appreciation for a work with other fans. A fanfic can be the most poorly written, out of character piece of garbage and you do not need to tell the writer. A piece of art can be hideous, you do not need to tell the artists. Just scroll. Just don’t engage.

I’m not talking about actually problematic stuff, that’s a whole separate thing. I’m talking about you not enjoying a thing and going out of your way to criticise the creator to their face when they just wanted to share their free fan work.

So Katniss, Haymitch and Snow all wear their parents’ old clothes to the Reaping. Which, yes, highlights that they can’t afford new clothes. But it also highlights how the games are about punishing a rebellion that happened generations before them. About how this system, how generational violence, is handed down to subsequent generations.

As Maysilee points out, you can’t pick your parents. As Vitus says, you can’t pick your ancestors. But the Capitol justifies the Games based on the percieved crimes of the District’s ancestors.

Thinking about how Haymitch, Maysilee and Lenore Dovecould have very easily been written as a love triangle but wasn’t even close.

Thinking about how a differentwriter could have created a romantic rivalry between Lenore Dove and Maysilee. But how Collins makes it clear that Haymitch loves Lenore Dove and that Maysilee and Haymitch are like family.

Thinking about how they are a tribute from the seam, his blonde town district partner and someone with thoughts of rebellion left waiting at home.

Thinking about the clear paralleled with Katniss, Peeta and Gale and how that was never really a love triangle either.

Okay Lenore Dove has some clear parallels with Lucy Gray, but she’s not the character I immediately thought of when we first meet her in Sunrise.

Haymitch sneaks off on the morning to meet her and they discuss the possibility of rebellion. Haymitch doesn’t think it’s a realistic possibility. Lenore Dove is way more engaged with the idea of rebellion than him.

Liked Show!Blood and Cheese I just have two issues:

-Wish they’d made it explicit why Blood didn’t just check which one the boy was. Just a line about no waking them incase they scream or something.

-Why did Alicent have to be mid ride? It’s so jarring but not in a good way. I get they want to show where Crispy Cole was but I think it would have been better to have them in a state of undress in her bedroom and we can all just infer what was going on.

I have some issues with show Blood and Cheese but I like that Helaena points to Jaehaerys.

Blood questions whether she’s lying, because who would give up the heir that easy? Because in Westeros a son’s life is worth more than a daughter’s life.

But to Helaena it doesn’t matter if they believe her or not, because either way she’ll lose a child.

She isn’t trying to sacrifice her daughter for her son, even if that’s what she should do by Westerosi standards. They are both her children, they both matter.

Also wanted to add that this whole thing about the importance of funeral customs is very Classics. We see it in the Iliad. In Antigone, burying a traitor is a politically transgressive act. Proper funerals are a big thing in Roman history, and the origin of Gladiatorial Games is as funeral gifts for the deceased. Funerals could also be big political events, see Julius Caesar’s funeral.

I just think it’s neat how all the little Roman influences pop up throughout this series.

Jamie chose to become known as a dishonourable kingslayer in order to protect the people of Kings Landing and his family.

Ned chose to become known as a traitor plotting against the rightful king in order to protect his daughters.

They both sacrificed their honourable reputation in order to save others. I wish they could have known each other better.

Do you ever think about the fact that opening chapter of both The Hunger Games and TBOSAS we see the protagonist get ready for the reaping? They both talk about the food available to them and then get dressed in their parents hand me down clothes but the context is so wildly different for each of them? Because I do.

I’m doing a reread and it struck me how similar the opening chapters are and how Collins really smacks you across the face with Snow being a foil to Katniss. The circumstances are on the surface very similar and it only serves to highlight the difference between the two in terms of morality, motivations and societal standing. They are literally fire and ice.

There’s also the Tigris and Katniss similarities which make me very emotional but that’s another topic.

So we all know how Suzanne Collins plays with YA romance tropes with the ‘love triangle’ in the original series but can we talk about how she does the same thing with TBOSAS!!!

The ‘dark romance’ is a big thing in YA. The brooding, charismatic villain redeemed by his love for a quirky, clever heroine. Except Snow is never redeemed, he’s an awful person who’s obsessive and controlling and doesn’t really see Lucy Gray as an actual person. He’s paranoid and mean and chooses power over her. He’s what these awful villain men would actually be like in a relationship.

IDK but I think Collins is intentionally playing with tropes again. Even the title sounds like a YA dark romance.

Fave thing about the Ghosts Christmas Special is that we don’t see any of the ghosts at the end in the flash forward. Meaning we don’t get see who, if anyone moved on.

The group of ghosts Alison greats in the hotel might not be the same as the one she left.
