She might have been rethinking the plan as she and Ian started changing places. You just keep moving Smith. One foot after another, you can do that. Though, of course, they hadn’t made it more than a couple of steps before Ian spoke up. She let out a breath of relief, seeing what he was doing. Sarah Jane kept a good grip on his arm as he got out of his belt.
“Brilliant” she managed to say, even if it was a bit breathy.
She found even on the tightest cinch, it fit better under her arms than around the rest of her. Once it was on, she gave the end an extra knot just to be certain. Then she looked up at her new friend quite seriously, taking the torch from him.
“No butterfingers today, please, Mr.Chesterton.”
Sarah Jane turned back to the void, swallowed hard, and started searching forward with one foot. There was nothing directly in front of them, according to her toes, so she bent her knees a bit and stretched out farther. A little farther. Then she had an idea and started reaching lower, depending now on Ian’s grip.
“There is something here!” she said in wonder as her toes found it. It swayed a little under her foot, perhaps like some sort of suspension bridge. She crammed the torch into her pocket, grit her teeth, and reached out, hoping for something to hold on to.
“Och!” she said in surprise. Whatever was under her hand, it was smooth and strange, and moved a little with whatever was under her feet.
Ian kept a tight hold of the belt in one hand and Sarah Jane's clothing in another. He'd had plenty of practise with this and Sarah Jane was shorter and lighter than Barbara. But other than that all he could really do was to watch. He didn't want to distract her by speaking, so he didn't.
That there was something there was good news, but he couldn't tell what it was, from her actions. Aside from it being unexpected, which didn't really narrow it down in this place.
"What is it?" he asked, looking where she was clearly holding onto something, even if he still couldn't see it. "Can you put all your weight on it?" Not that he had any intention of letting go off the belt until he was sure she couldn't fall.
