seth’s grip remained around his little sister, her head tucked underneath his chin. rarely was he ever this soft with anyone, but with is sister is was different. she had always come first and even though he felt he had let her down he was gonna make sure to make it up to her. “you’re not alone nat,” he muttered. “you’re never alone. not with me.”

Seth felt like he couldn’t even swallow. His throat dry from the array of emotions that overcame him. One of them being anger. To know this had been happening to her right under his nose. In this city. It had infuriated him. But even more so the fact that someone hurt her was an even bigger kick to the gut than he could fathom. natalie let out a hard sigh. not one of anger or annoyance which they normally implied but instead one of relief. it had been so long since she had felt that sense of protection. s a f e. just like he said. though it was fair to say that when he left; she was a mess. unable to, for lack of a better phrase, take care of herself. a simple wreck. that was what she had become. pieces all apart. vulnerable. tightly, she clung to him for a moment more. ❛ good, you better not cause i need you. ❜ nat broke after pulling herself back together. ❛ i hate feeling so alone. i even left home after graduation because it didn’t feel the same. not without you. ❜

Sam looked up from his from his deep stare at his feet to see who his savior was. He’d been shackled for at least an hour it felt like after an interesting encounter with someone at a club. “I know what it looks, but can we save the laughs for later? They told me it was a bathroom and next thing I  know they handcuffed me and turned on the lights to this…” He strained against the restraints again. “How was I supposed to know that the club name stood for BDSM?”

   natalie couldn’t help but grin. it was a pretty funny, yet sticky, situation. though it also wasn’t hard to figure out but apparently for some it was. ❛ no, it’s okay. i get it. this is what you do with your days off. that’s cool. do you! ❜ she laughed, playing into it a bit. she wouldn’t allow him to suffer much longer as she walked over towards him to free him from the binds. ❛ the dancing lady in the front window didn’t give you any hints? it new orleans. it’s crawling with places like this. ❜ the clanging of metal against metal meant she was done. however, still couldn’t help but laugh.

Seth watched her closely as she spoke, the words immediately clicking as his jaw stiffened. All this time she’d been in pain and it was because of him. If he had never left town, had he just stuck it out, this would’ve never happened. Running his hands through his hair absently, the man let out a stifled sigh as he looked over at his sister. “Nat  ”Seth said quietly before pulling her in once more. Hand resting on her head. “You’re okay now. Their not gonna touch you again. I’m here okay? I’m not leaving you.”

   natalie nodded slowly as she began to think of a few place the man may enjoy. ❛ well, you’ve got a tough choice then. right down the street here is o’conner’s pub and i guess i’m bias but i think they’re the best. may or may not be because i work there. but you’ve also got the lucky cow which is kind of obvious they sell burgers. they’re about two blocks over. and if you are feeling a little adventurous there’s always mcdonald’s. ❜

this city was starting to grow on him. it had a dark beat, humming with old history and bad blood. an air that meant: something wasn’t quite right here. it was delicious. it made him become jovial, as if he had one too many when he was completely sober. “Evenin’–” even tipped his head in some southern greeting to the individual walking past. but something made him pause and turn around, call out in a clear but friendly voice. “– hey now, you know of a good place to eat? Something a local would like, I mean,”

   during the last hour and a half of her shift, all natalie could think about was going home and crawling straight into bed. maybe covering for a coworker hadn’t exactly been the best idea. a seventeen hour day was enough to wear anyone out. as she fiddled with the keys in her hand, she smiled softly to the man passing by. again, still in a rush to get home she almost missed him inquiring about local eats. turning back she shrugged, ❛ uh, i guess it really depends on what you’re in the mood for. ❜

Seth fidgeted uncomfortably at the awkward silence between them. Not entirely sure what would come next. Though her understanding nod did ease it slightly, but her change in demeanor only served to raise his concern. “No,” He bluntly replied. “   But seeing as it’s evident that something did happen what I want doesn’t really matter.” Walking up to her, Seth put his hands on his sisters shoulders, internally bracing himself for whatever was coming next. “What happened?”

  it wasn’t long after he left home that her world seemed to shift upside down. it was as if with him gone pieces began to fall apart. slowly crumbling until she felt like there was nothing left. making her slightly vulnerable. ❛ i got caught. ❜ she said, ❛ i don’t mean from sneaking out late or a joint in my closet. after you left i got careless and if finally caught up with me. ❜ natalie’s eyes still avidly avoiding her brothers. ❛ i guess when you think you’re alone you’re not really alone because after what seemed like a normal run i was blind sided by a truck while i was on my way back home. things got a little fuzzy after that. but when i woke back up— ❜ she stopped, her eyes finally meeting his. her head gently shook from side to side. arms sliding across her chest. knuckles white as she grabbed her her sleeves. ❛ i thought that was it, seth. all i could keep thinking what that i was going to die. i still don’t know how i got away but i did. ❜

Seth’s brown hues watched sister, his lips pressed into line before he shook his head, “Nat..I had to leave. After she…” He paused. There was a certain frustration that came with being unable to say the name of his ex eight years after her passing. It just didn’t seem real. “I just couldn’t be here and you were still a kid at the time, I couldn’t bring you with me.” That along with the fact that he was ultimately the one that killed their cousin and had that held over his head by them for the longest. But he chose to omit that part. “Nat…what happened…?” He asked in a quieter tone, fearing that he might soon regret asking that.

  when he broke mid sentence that was when natalie came to realize everything. the disappearing act had all been brought on because of one thing. one event. and as much as it pained her to agree, he was right. at the time she had been too young. it would have made things more difficult. plus with him being of legal age when he left it made it easy for him to vanish then it would have natalie. finally, she nodded slowly but only a moment later she froze. brown hues shifting around. trying her best to avoid his. ❛ are you sure you really want me to answer that? ❜ she asked followed by a long sigh before tucking her lip inward. a nervous habit.
