!!! ABSOLUTELY MUST SEE !!!
Before The Flood - I think this should be a mandatory viewing for everyone living on (suffocating) this planet.
I know the climate change situation is bad but I didn’t expect it to be this desperately bad.
This is a shocking, disturbing final call. Actions must be taken, and they must be taken now, to lessen, and if possible, turn back the impact of human activity on the planet’s ecology otherwise we’re screwed, big time.
Now, on to much lighter topics.
I (re)watched some of my favourite Tom Cruise movies like Knight And Day Oblivion and Rock Of Ages for at least the tenth time as I felt the need for drooling over him a bit. Probably Rock Of Ages is the best for the purpose as one can immensely drool over born to be a rock star Tom while listening to some good old stadium rock. But he’s steaming hot in Knight And Day and very handsome and very likeable in Obliion so it’s hard to decide. He’s great as always.

The Taming Of The Shrew (2005) – oh so this is part of the rather originally modernised Shakespeare-ReTold series. I don’t normally like modernised adaptations but this one is really great, funny and entertaining, especially thanks to a most marvellous Rufus Sewell playing Petruchio wonderfully.
Bonus: (spoiler!!) drag queen Rufus Sewell. Never thought it would be such a marvellous thing as it is.

Rome Adventure – a nice ‘60s romantic movie that takes you on a Vespa trip through some of Italy’s most beautiful areas. Sights include Verona, Pisa, Florence, Arezzo, Orvieto, Rome, Ostia Antica, and the countryside in between….
Films rewatched
American Heart - I caught it on the telly and thought I’d watch it for the second time. It’s certainly worth to see because of the excellent performances. And if someone’s sympathetic to low life people who don’t show much willingness to change their miserable life. I can’t identify with them even the least yet I felt sad and sorry for Jeff Bridges’ good for nothing character. That’s how marvellous he is here. So is Edward Furlong, playing his son. It’s a real shame he got so lost.
Films for fans
Arrival – it starts out quite good but then becomes a pretentious hipster wannabe deep sci-fi movie. I wouldn’t say Amy Adams’ performance was something outstanding because we have seen much much better stuff from her before and the Rattner as a physicist? Even with glasses it’s a bit hard to swallow. After the relatively good building up of the film’s world and “mythology”, when the writers should go into details why things happen the way they do they just come up with a just because kind of answer. Then they throw in a few stupid and completely off the top of the head conflicts like some self-designated Ramboes sabotaging the mission and then finish the movie with an almost twenty minutes soap opera? And even that, a bad one? What remains is just cheap, shallow and disappointing.
Hercules – well I’m certainly not someone to praise Brett Rattner’s attempts at directing a film but this one was actually quite watchable. Though I’m not sure it’s not the mightily gorgeous Messrs. Sewell (with eyeliner!) and McShane who affected my judgement.
Jason Bourne - I don’t know why I watched it. Probably to look at buff Matt Damon. A better question is… why they made it?

Aerosmith, Aero-Vederci Baby Tour, Firenze Rocks, June 2017 – I hope this time there won’t be any natural disaster stopping me from seeing Aerosmith, having been waiting to see them for 10 years now. Sadly it looks like this will be my only chance. Or perhaps not? Old rockers tend to have several farewell tours. Fingers crossed!

Dark City
October 2016
I’m getting rather lazy with this thing.
Film recommended
Dark City – awww it’s so very good, and visually stunning, eerie and unusual, disturbing and .. dark. I love its otherwordliness.
I sat down watching it with the certainty of having seen it before but then I just couldn’t remember any of it. That’s very creepy when watching a film with the main character losing his memories because he’s getting brainwashed by mysterious and ghastly creatures.
Worth to see
BFG – I liked it because it’s a nice, and sometimes scary tale in nicely evoked old England but for a Spielberg film… there’s just not enough magic there.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back – I liked it more than the first one as Christopher McQuarry’s heavy handed directing style just doesn’t work for me. The plot’s sometimes hard to follow but there’s badass Tom Cruise and even some good laughs so it’s good entertainment. The overly sappy and way too long final scene should have ended up on the cutting room floor though.
An Unfinished Life – Robert Redford and Morgan Freeman playing old friends. A slow, nicely shot, pleasant and little sad treat.
Film for fans
Downhill Racer – if one’s in the mood for young Robert Redford driving sports cars and skiing in picturesque Austrian villages…
Film not recommended
The Program – well, Lance Armstrong is a jerk. And that’s it basically.
Series (binge) watched
Designated Survivor – as much as you can binge watch a currently running tv show… It’s a bit too patriotic for me but Kiefer Sutherland for President, anytime!
Wallander Season 4 – I’ve been really looking forward to it and finally remembered to watch it. The acting is good, the atmosphere is heavy, the landscapes are bland and gloomy, just as before, but the stories are not the best of the series. Still, it’s sad to see Wallander go. Zen – Rufus Sewell? In suit? And in Rome? Always and forever.
Great detective mini-series, a real shame it didn’t get more than three episodes.
Concert tickets bought
Depeche Mode, Global Spirit Tour June and July 2017 – DEPECHE MODE ARE FINALLY BACK! I like that I can count on them every four years.
No explanation is necessary why one gets tickets to see Dave Gahan shaking his most magnificent backside Depeche Mode in Budapest, and in Rome, and in Bologna as well.

Films absolutely recommended
Casablanca – ON THE BIG SCREEN. Gorgeously shot, moving, wonderful, captivating, brilliantly written, and brilliantly acted, too. I think I could keep listing adjectives but could never adequately describe what a wonderful movie Casablanca still is. The greatest romance ever!
The Wrestler – again something caught by chance while channel surfing. It’s a great film for the second watch as well and Mickey Rourke’s performance is still so good that it literally hurts.
Worth to see
Demolition – Jake Gyllenhaal loses his mind and he does it very well.
Stargate – caught it on the telly as well and of course couldn’t skip it. I’ll forever love that movie. And I’ll probably never stop playing with the idea that the pyramids were built by an alien civilisation. Some cinematography appreciation and further contemplation here.
Films for fans
Independence Day – I was in the mood for some more cheesy Roland Emmerich so watched another of his classics... I think it’s still a great popcorn movie. I wish blockbusters these days were only this bad.
Sully – I went to see it with high expectations but Master Clint disappointed me. It’s not a bad movie at all but it’s really nothing special, just a retelling of the inquest into the emergency landing in the Hudson River.
August 2016
Not an overly cultured month. Just a few average films watched mainly for aesthetic purposes.
Out Of The Furnace – yet another not too good, not too bad movie watched for Casey Affleck. Christian Bale plays his older brother and I must say he does that rather enjoyably.
Bonus: Pearl Jam’s Release over the end credits.
Pete’s Dragon – it’s really nicely shot but very sappy, cliched and stupid at times.
Star Trek Beyond – okay-ish, nothing really remarkable but at least somewhat better than I expected.
Stigmata – it was on the telly and I couldn’t refuse watching it for the exact same reason why I’d watched it quite several times before. Gabriel Byrne makes the hottest priest in film history. Damn. I just want to sin.
Bonus: Billy Corgan wrote the score but to be honest I prefer him sticking to Smashing Pumpkins.
Triple 9 – a tough cop drama with utterly gorgeous Casey Affleck with long hair! Ah. What a babe.
Watch Out, We’re Mad – not my kind of comedy but I wanted to watch something that’s in Italian but still easy to understand. Turns out the Italian audio track of the film is in fact dubbing.
Bonus: a bunch of Ducati Scramblers, some Ossa bikes and a Moto Zodiaco Tuareg.
