And may I just add, as someone who recently got out of an abusive relationship both mentally and physically, watching an on-screen couple who is so soft and tender with each other, who genuinely cares for one another, is amazing.

Betty and Jughead are so supportive and I think showing that to young people is important too. A relationship is more than sex, and love is deeper than attraction. Betty and Jughead have shown in just these last few episodes how there they are for one another, there’s understanding, there’s attentiveness, there’s support, there’s affection– I support that so fucking hard.

“It’s important to remember that — though Betty and Archie when they were younger were this cute couple — Jughead, Betty and Archie were the three childhood friends. So Betty knows Jughead probably just as well as Archie does in certain ways and she is also this sort of nostalgic force of what was once morally just,” Sprouse explained. “I do believe Jughead is absolutely obsessed with what was once Riverdale, and Betty still represents this morality and purity that he associates to this more ‘Peter Pan’-like childhood version of Riverdale. He also revealed that we’ll see Jughead without his hat on in moments of vulnerability — particularly where Betty is involved. “So there are a couple episodes — I won’t spoil too much — where you definitely get to see Jughead without a hat on, but we’ve saved it only for real vulnerable and personal moments,” he shared. “Yeah, you only see Jughead without his hat on in super vulnerable moments, because we kind of sold it as like his security blanket of sorts, and so – when he’s willing to take it off – it becomes this kind of special, vulnerable, personal thing. I think the first time he loses his hat is a moment with Betty. There are three episodes I think he loses his hat — it’s episode 10 (GET EXCITED!), episode 12, and once this episode [the finale] as well.”

Cole has just confirmed every single thing I was thinking. Some are saying Jughead is cold, he is not. He is showing his vulnerabilities slowly during the episodes, like the time he was jealous about Betty's date, the way he was so cute and shy with that suit and his nervous behavior before the kiss. I don't think that sigh of relief was about fear of rejection. It was the moment he felt relief for being brave and show his feelings. He likes Betty for her shining personality and also he can see himself on her. It is hard for him to let people in, but he opened the door for Betty. I love Bughead with all my heart.

“As much as there’s a large community of people who really want to see Jughead as asexual, and I am a huge proponent for that kind of representation, there’s also quite a large community of avid Archie fans that want Betty and Jughead to be together, too,” Sprouse said. “I think these are things we need to juggle when considering what Jughead is in Riverdale. This is a new universe, this is a new take on Jughead, and he is this tortured damaged kid — this Holden Caulfield — who is looking for someone who can relate to him on a personal level and that narrative itself is also beautiful. While I think that [asexual] representation is needed, this Jughead is not that Jughead. This Jughead is not Zdarsky’s Jughead and this Jughead is not the aromantic Jughead. This Jughead is a person who is looking for a kind of deeper companionship with a person like Betty..and Betty ends up being this super nurturing, caring, catering person that with Jughead’s super screwed-up past they end up diving into each other and it ends up being a beautiful thing. How are people going to respond? Truthfully, they’re probably going to be quite incendiary about it at first. Do I think that’s ill-placed? No. Do I think they should give it a shot? Yeah, I do, because I think that after filming thirteen episodes, it makes sense to me and if it makes sense to me as the person who’s dumping so much time and so much argumentation into trying to represent Jughead correctly, it will make sense to other people as well.”
