Setting talk! (We Are Here)
Hey everyone! I haven’t seen anyone else in the writeblr community doing anything like this–from what I’ve seen, most of the writing content out there is pretty character-focused. Which is cool! But also, I think settings are a huge part of developing a story, so I wanted to talk about the main settings of We Are Here. Oh, you don’t know what that is? You can find more about it by hitting this link. :)
Harrison is a sort of medium-sized city–not Vancouver or New York big, but big enough there’s probably a respectable university there, and public transit decent enough you don’t really need to own a car. It gets a lot of storms and rain and stuff, and it’s also very dense, so you can get most places just by walking.Â
It’s a few hours drive off of Hendricks, the town Where The Broken Things are took place in. Although Hendricks is much more rural and foresty, Harrison still is surrounded by trees, with lots of lakes and foothills and things like that.Â
Scott lives above his moms’ cafe, Kings, maybe twenty minutes walking from Charlie, in the centre of the city.Â
Charlie lives in a much poorer area,in a small, shitty, apartment. And of course, Angelina lives in one of those suburban hellscapes every city has to have, where every house is painted in grey, white, or beige, and every single lawn is disturbingly green. Because her parents are terrible. Oh, she even has an old treehouse in her backyard that her and Charlie like to hang out in.
The second main setting of the series! Okay, so, the ghosts in We Are Here aren’t actually physically in what they call the Land of the Living (aka normal human world). They’re kind of these projections, from a world called The Nowhere–a strange little pocket dimension, where nothing grows, the air is unbreathable, and the ground is made of ash, and there’s loads of radiation. To survive in this realm, the literal only thing left to feed off of in what is essentially is a deadly vacuum, is the suffering of others.Â
This a whole plotpoint in later seasons, so I won’t tell you too much more than that, but basically how it works is that ghosts are born at the exact same moment a human is born in our world. These ghosts are immediately tied to their counterpart, and rely on that person’s suffering to sustain themself. Should they fail–or should their human die, and they not be able to handle living without their primary source of energy–they will start to die as well, and become pulled towards the South Pole, somewhat magnetically.Â
However, if they can survive the death of, essentially, their food source, they come out of it much stronger, and are now free to choose who next to latch onto. This is what Angelina’s ghost, Lavinia, has done–she’s been around for thousands of years, and killed hundreds of people, via many different methods–often, as simple as encouraging them to do stupid, risky things, like walking in the middle of a highway, talking to them and upsetting them while driving, etc.
It is here at the South Pole the dying are collected, and brought to Auren, the leader of The Nowhere, who lost his connection with his human, and is only able to feed off his own kind. (His whole thing is being able to absorb the energy of others.)
The Nowhere is about the same size as our planet, and The Axium–its capital is located near the equator.
I hope you enjoyed reading me ramble about my settings and all the worldbuilding around them, I had a lot of fun writing this! WAH is an indie podcast, and I need all the help I can get, so if you’d be interested in beta reading, drawing promotional art, voice acting, whatever, although I don’t have the financial means right now to pay you loads or money I am open to doing any kind of suitable trade for your contribution. If you want to help out, fire me a message :)
