something I love about Adrian Monk is that he's a well-rounded, complex character. he is allowed to be negatively impacted by his mental illness, but his friends call him out on it when his behaviors become harmful. the narrative allows him to be annoying as well as clever, funny as well as tragic, nihilistic as well as compassionate. his life is defined by grief. he has actively decided not to get over the loss of his wife and his loved ones respect that. he has to be the most insufferable person in the room or he'll die. he makes hilarious jokes for his own benefit and doesn't care if no one else laughs. he makes misogynist comments and then walks them back after his nurses/assistants yell at him about it. he loves the kids he meets but is disgusted by children as a concept (and this, in fact, applies to any living creature as a whole). he's got neurodivergent rizz and is terrified of it because of how much he loves his dead wife. he's perfectly happy being miserable. he is constantly in despair. he cannot handle anyone else's emotions. he is a considerate friend who will offer you unconditional support and then immediately regret it when he realizes it will mess up his routine. he's also a huge fucking nerd. Murderous (a rapper portrayed by Snoop Dogg, who irl was charged with and acquitted of murder in the 90s) thinks of him as a close, personal friend. he has confirmation that he is not his therapist's favorite patient.
