He was also the brother of James Arness, who played Matt Dillon on Gunsmoke from 1955 - 1975. The Aurness (originally Aursness) brothers were of Norwegian heritage.

After reading through the article, it’s even more fascinating a story than the title would lead one to believe. Thomas bonded to a broken-winged black swan named Henrietta, and they were a pair for 18 years before a second swan arrived and bonded to Henrietta as well. The new swan started to lay eggs, and as it turned out, Henrietta was actual a male, so they renamed him Henry and named the new swan Henrietta instead.

The trio raised 68 cygnets together over 6 years before Henry died of old age. Henrietta left, and Thomas eventually found a female goose to bond to, with whom he had 10 goslings. After this, Henry started to go blind, and was relocated to a sanctuary, where he died in February of 2018. A memorial was held for him, with tributes coming from all over.

Thomas was buried beside Henry, with tribute plaque that reads:

Here lies Thomas, the great-hearted goose,

Nestled near Henry, in their final roost,

Here where they raised young, and found sanctuary,

Somewhere above us, these great souls fly free.

Pigeon cocks usually bring sticks to their wives.

Some of them are a little harder-wired for it than others.

Most cocks, instead of sticking rigidly to sex-typical behaviors, will happily accommodate a wife that likes to perform more cock-typical behaviors like being the one to bring sticks.

The hen needs the nest to be comfortable to lay in, so she usually inspects, accepts or rejects sticks, and arranges the ones she accepts.
