Daily Outfits: Flagged
If there is one thing that I hate, it's being told that I'm dressing like a national flag. I'm not sure why, but I'm guessing it has to do with being Asian American and having your identity on a fence line. And growing up in the Bay Area...which is not the most patriotic place in the world. So because I'm both Chinese and American...that means I hate wearing red/yellow and red/blue/white. Which is a super bummer because I think those colors are some of the greatest combinations this world has seen! Not to mention, I've recently been a sucker for navy themed clothing and accessories (red, white and blue galore!). And so I've taken a risk and put together an outfit that may cause some people to assume (incorrectly), that I'm communist or something...And I think it came out beautifully!!! Red and yellow, truly a good combination. Only pity was that it was a bit too hot to enjoy this outfit too much. But yeah, hope you like it! This outfit was actually from last Friday, but I had to share it, so I just posted it up now! Happy stylin'!
DIY It Up: T-shirt Necklace
It was just a very DIY day and filled with t-shirts as well! My final creation was one based on the tutorial by Recycled Craft. I put together 6 strands cut from a t-shirt and as an addition, I took a strand from a white t-shirt and braided it into the necklace! What do you think?
DIY It Up: Cut-out shirt
I think that at the heart of DIY is being inspired by your surroundings; whether it's nature, something from an expensive store, or something a celebrity, it's great to be able to recreate something new out of something old. And that's the impression I got when I saw Jungah's (girl on the right in the top picture) shirt in After School's music video, Shampoo. Totally doable with just about any shirt! So I went for it!
All I had to do was cut lines across the sleeves of the tshirt and cut a v-neck out of the neckline. One thing that I was careful to do was sew along the seam across the top of the shirt in order to make sure that after washing the shirt, the shirt wouldn't come apart. And here's how it turned out!
DIY It Up: Knotted Headband
Check out the headband I made recently!!! Extremely easy, fashionable, and free since I made it out of t-shirt strips! Yay for old t-shirts! Make your own headband using this tutorial. As an extra plus, my sister found a headband with the same exact design at Forever 21 the next day, except it was made from elastic string. Now you know...don't buy it, make it yourself!
where do you go to school. And what are you studying?
Haha, why anonymous? I feel like I'm being hunted down or something. I promise I don't bite!
I am currently a student at UCLA, and I'm actually undecided at this point, but I am looking into a double major in Biology and Linguistics and Asian Language and Culture. :) Yeah...I know it's a weird combination.
Daily Outfits: Walking On Sunshine
If there was one day where my outfit was inspired, today would be the day. I've been watching a korean drama recently called Romance Town and it's about a group of housemaids who win the lottery. It's okay if you're not interested. That's not the point. The point is that in the drama, all the housemaids wear these gorgeous outfits every single day that consist of long dresses and skirts and beautiful chiffon blouses and shirts. Very flowy and elegant. And so, I've been pulling out a couple of my longer skirts out of my wardrobe for wear! And it does feel so elegant yet comfortable! I love it! I really want a floor length skirt or dress now!! My other inspiration for this outfit was WhatIWore. Jessica Quirk wears a lot of blouses with the front knotted or tied, so I knew I wanted to try that with my high waisted skirt. And it came out wonderfully! I love those moments when you realize you can totally pull off a style that you never thought you could before. Well, enjoy and I hope you have an inspired day!
Nibbles and Bites: Kimchi Jiggae [Kimchi Stew]
What do you do with a handful of kimchi, a package of ramen, a big handful of spinach, one whole onion (small onion), one potato and pork??
Well, my title is a dead giveaway, so good job! Yes, kimchi jiggae is right. A common dish in Korean households, kimchi jiggae is delicious, easy to make, and can be molded to suit your tastes and your ingredients on hand. What I mean by this is that there are a lot of ingredients that you can include or not include based on what you like to eat. I had lots of spinach, so I added spinach. I also wanted to eat potatoes, so I added potatoes (sorry to all Koreans out there who are shocked by my untraditional ways...forgive me!!). At the end of this post, I will post some other suggestions on what you can add to the pot that I did not add.
So cut your veggies and meat up. I did cubes for potatoes, and slices for the pork. And I cut the onions pretty small but you can cut it however you would like it. In your main pot, add water to the pot, based on how much stew you want. I did half the pot. Add a handful of kimchi onto the pot (more or less based on how much spice you can take, you can also add spicy pepper paste to make it more spicy and yummy) and let the water boil. After the water starts boiling, add in the potatoes. Marinate your pork in soy sauce and sugar for 15 minutes and then fry that in a pan with onions until they're almost fully cooked (you're going to boil it in the pot for awhile as well). Add that into the pot and then add the package of ramen noodles (the sauce packages are unnecessary). After that's been cooking for a bit, add the spinach finally! Make sure the noodles are done cooking and you're ready to turn the heat off and eat eat eat! Make sure you get some side dishes to enjoy along with this delicious stew! I have my preserved radish which is sweet and refreshing. And of course, milk! Definitely a must for those who have low heat tolerance.
Other ingredients to consider:
1. Egg
Especially if you have low spicy tolerance, eggs are a blessing in kimchi stew. In fact, I was originally going to add an egg into my stew, but I completely forgot about it! But seriously, when you bite into the egg yolk, it counteracts the spiciness of the stew and it's the perfect feeling. You must try it sometime!
2. Tofu
Yum yum tofu! What would our korean dish be without tofu?? Unfortunately, I only have one block in my house right now and I must save ALL of it for my tofu stew coming up next week!!! I definitely prefer soft tofu over firm tofu, but, do what you like!
3. Mushrooms
I confess. I detest mushrooms with a passion. I really tried to eat it, but I really don't enjoy the taste. But if you like them, by all means, add them! Bring more pleasure to your eating.
4. Green Onion
The universal ingredient to make food yummier! I actually did not have any on hand, so I somewhat substituted normal onions, next time, green onions for sure!
5. No ramen
I believe the more traditional way to enjoy kimchi jiggae is to not add ramen noodles and to cook rice instead and eat those two together. And it is a delicious combo! So if you're a rice fan, go for it!
6. No meat
For you vegetarians or people who don't enjoy meat. Or maybe you just don't have any meat on hand. No worries! This dish tastes just as delicious without the meat!
Hope you guys enjoyed that and happy eating! For all you people who enjoy kimchi jiggae, what do you put in your kimchi jiggae?
Hair Snippets: Inspired
My bangs were getting super super long and unmanageable, and so I decided to opt for a new hairstyle today. Off to the bathroom with scissors! To be honest, I confess that I was partly inspired with these bangs from a singer, but it didn't turn out similar at all, so I'm not going to show a picture of what it was supposed to look like. Haha. But I think it turned out okay! See for yourself?
Before (okay, this was weeks before and I'm in the middle. I forgot to take a before picture)
After:
The main thing about this haircut is that my bangs are cut almost like fob front straight bangs, but super unevenly and parted toward the right (my left). I also layered the bangs. However, I actually layered my bangs into two layers, and the layer on top is longer than the bottom layer. So it's kinda weird, but it's pretty unique and hopefully I can play with it a bit to make it look better. I like the unique flare to it though. And flipping your head is super fun! :D
Nibbles and Bites: Green Eggs and Spam!
Hello, it's me again! I've been up to a lot more cooking this past week or so, so I finally have time to share my most recent accomplishments! And the chief ingredient of today's food is spam! I will not try to convey the healthiness of spam, since it is probably ridiculously high in sodium and a lot of other preservatives and not so good stuff, but I will say for those of you who have never had it before, it is DELICIOUS! And I just so happened to have a can of it in the fridge so of course I was dying to use it! I think the classic dish for spam other than spam musubi is just to fry it with onions and eggs and eat it. But my sister randomly said green eggs and ham, and so I was inspired to make this dish more healthy by adding spinach into the mix! And eat it with white rice and ketchup. Yummmm.
It's very basic. You just have to cut everything up and fry it together in a pan with oil. Some tips however if you would like to replicate this dish yourself. After making this, I felt like the spam was overpowering everything else in the dish, so I would say if you use a full can of spam, use at least 3 eggs (I used 2) and if you are using the big store bought onions, you probably only need half an onion. Also, concerning the order in which you cook everything, add spam first and make sure it's almost completely cooked before you add in onions. Otherwise the onions will burn like crazy. Then add eggs and the spinach last. I think there are recipes where you can ground up the spinach and add it to egg which will make a real Green Eggs and Spam dish!
On a side note, what was most exciting about this dish was that the onion is from my own garden! There is such a great satisfaction in being able to go to your backyard right before you cook and digging out a fresh onion from the ground for your recipe! And of course it saves money and is organic too! Do you use any vegetables fresh from your backyard in your cooking?
Daily Outfits: Early Winter
Went to San Francisco today!! Meaning I got to pull out some layers and scarves out today to battle the cold weather in SF! I feel like such a discontented person. I'm always looking to dress for winter in summer and vice versa. But things worked out perfectly! I love the splash of colors that both my skirt and scarf bring to my outfit and even though it contrasts, it still matches. Also, I totally got to experiment with my socks and I am totally looking forward to go retro and wear socks with all my shoes!!! (sandals+socks!!!) It's a good day!
DIY It Up: Loyalty Card Holder
As an avid collector of business cards, I had to make this loyalty card holder when I saw the tutorial by A Lemon Squeezy Home on Grosgrain's Free Pattern Month (from which I'm planning to make 3 more projects at least!!) I think the most exciting part of this project was that I got to make my first button hole!
Nibbles and Bites: Salmon Time!
Okay, don't be like me...don't play with your food while you're preparing it! Well, one of my favorite foods to eat nowadays is salmon and so I wanted to share how we prepare it in my family. This recipe is super easy and quite tasty as well. All you need is a salmon fillet (remember, WILD ALASKAN!! More expensive, but soo much better than fish farmed for reasons I will not expand on right now...), black pepper, sliced garlic (2-3 cloves), 1/2 cup of maple syrup, and 1/2 cup of soy sauce.
So wash your fillet and scale the fish first! This is probably my favorite part as you can tell from the picture XD. Once you're done with that, put the salmon in a pan (probably 13x9) and sprinkle black pepper onto both sides of the fillet. I don't know exactly how much you need, but I spread it pretty liberally. Take your maple syrup and soy sauce and mix it together in a bowl. It's important to mix it before you pour it onto the salmon because you want the flavor to be even throughout. Pour your mixture onto the salmon and put half the garlic on the fish. Let it sit for 10 minutes or so and then flip the salmon over, put the rest of the garlic on top and let it sit for another 10 minutes. And you're ready to bake the salmon! When you're baking, make sure that the flesh of the salmon is on top and that the skin on the side facing the pan. So just pop your salmon into the oven on 400 degrees for about 20 minutes and you're ready to feast!
Note: If you bake the salmon this way, the flavor is very strong and very sweet. So if you like your salmon more savory (ie, mayonnaise and lemon) or you don't like heavy flavors with your fish, this is not the method for you! Hope you try this recipe and enjoy it!
DIY It Up: Piecing It Together
I dug through my extensive collection of fabric scraps and I was looking online for a way to use them and I was originally going to piece them together randomly to make clothing, but I found a better idea: a quilt! The basis for my design is from this tutorial, but other than the general pattern, I just made up steps as I went along.
My first step was to cut out the quilt blocks. I used an index card (3x5) for my dimensions which made the cutting process a lot easier. There were some pieces that were slightly smaller and some that were slightly bigger, but in the end it's okay because you piece them together and it works out. The dimensions of my quilt were 14 blocks per line and 13 lines, so I needed to cut out 182 pieces.
Once you piece it together, it looks like this top picture here. If you don't like the randomness of the pieces, you can always make a pattern with your blocks, but since I was using a lot of scraps and I didn't have a set number of each cloth pattern, I decided that randomly doing the patterns would be better. Feel free to add a border or designs on top of the blocks or whatever floats your boat!
To get to the final product, I cut a piece of large cloth for the back of the quilt and I put the two together, with the right sides facing each other. Then on top those two layers, put a piece of cotton batting for the middle of the quilt. Sew all the edges together, but leave about a 12 inch region open so you can flip the right sides out. Turn in the raw edges of the opening and hand sew it shut. And here is the final product!
It's a bit awkward in size, but it looks good! I definitely wouldn't use this for a blanket, but it would work well if you're just sitting on a couch and need a comfort blanket or something!
Have any other innovative and useful ideas for your fabric scraps? Feel free to share!
Daily Outfits: Chic
Color is always fun to work with in your wardrobe, but then there are those days where you just want to go black and white and look...well, chic! And this day goes under the latter category. I'm really into tucking in my shirts nowadays...yeah, not much to say. :)
DIY It Up: Sick Comforts
I made this adorable tissue box for myself and I love it so much! Almost makes me wish I were sick with some sniffles so I can use it! Okay, it's not that nice, but I really like it! I would like to mention that it is ridiculously easy to make and requires only a little bit of cloth. Check out this tutorial to make your own tissue holder!
