Throwback to when I had the sudden urge to watch the breakup episode of glee, looked up 'what episode of glee was the one with the freaky Jesus club' and found out it had literally aired that day
the glee timeline is completely nonsensical. a few months ago, when I was plotting out this huge fic I was gonna write (back when I was sure that cruel intentions would only take me another month) I went through every episode from seasons 3-5, made related notes, and then timestamped all of them with real world dates and I really must share my findings because I don't know where else to put them. also I think this could be useful if anyone else is still writing canon-rewrite glee fan fiction in the year of our lord 2026.
first of all, I'll explain how I figured out what was where. Sectionals is a great touchstone to use, because Sectionals always happens on Thanksgiving weekend. In ss3 and 4, Sectionals takes place in the 8th episode. I like that. That's nice and tidy, I can work with that. Similarly, Regionals is in March, and Nationals tends to happen in May.
Obviously there are also important holidays that we can use that are explicitly mentioned, like Christmas and Valentine's Day.
What's worth noting is that s3 takes place over one full school year, while s4 is about seven months (but the timeline is weird here, we'll get to it), and the first half of s5 is 4-ish months. we know what times things took place in because in the background of some shots, there might be a calendar or something that tells us when an event takes place. since most episodes in glee represent one week, we can count to figure out exact timelines.
In s6, Sue has a calendar that she uses to track the development of Klaine. This is super useful for figuring out s6, because that timeline doesn't really make sense either, but it also extends to helping us figure out the latter half of s5.
Season 3 (2011-2012)
Here are the episodes and when I estimate they happened:
September
01 Purple Piano Project
02 I am Unicorn
October
03 Asian F
04 Pot O' Gold
05 The First Time
November
06 Mash-Off
07 I Kissed A Girl
08 Hold on to Sixteen (Sectionals, Thanksgiving)
December
09 Extraordinary Merry Christmas
January
10 Yes/No
11 Michael
February
12 The Spanish Teacher
13 Heart (Valentine's Day)
14 On My Way
March
15 Big Brother
16 Saturday Night Glee-ver
17 Dance With Somebody*
April
18 Choke
19 Prom-Asaurus
May/June
20 Nationals
21 Goodbye
*You will notice I asterisk-ed Dance With Somebody, that is because this episode DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TIMELINE WISE. Whitney Houston died on the 11th February 2012 - i.e. around the time of The Spanish Teacher/Heart. This means one of two things, either (a) the New Directions had a supremely delayed reaction to Whitney Houston's death, or (b) Whitney Houston, in the Glee universe, died over a month after she died irl.
Moving on...
Season 4 (2012-2013)
For season 4, things start to go a bit off the rails. I started to get quite specific with timings around 4x14 I Do because that was where my story picked up, and because that's where things got confusing.
September
01 The New Rachel
02 Britney 2.0
03 Makeover
October
04 The Break-Up
05 The Role You Were Born To Play
November
(I assumed that it took more than a week for Artie to put together Glease)
06 Glease
07 Dynamic Duets
08 Thanksgiving
December
09 Swan Song
10 Glee, Actually
January
11 Sadie Hawkins
12 Naked
February
13 Diva
14 I Do (2nd Week Feb)
15 Girls (And Boys) On Film (3rd Week Feb)
16 Feud (4th Week Feb)
March
SO MUCH HAPPENS IN MARCH!!
In theory, the following episodes all take place in March:
17 Guilty Pleasures
18 Shooting Star
19 Sweet Dreams
20 Lights Out
21 Wonder-ful
22 All Or Nothing (Regionals)
5x01 Love, Love, Love
5x02 Tina In The Sky With Diamonds
Obviously that doesn't make sense. So, for the sake of fan fiction and my sanity, I propose this updated timeline:
17 Guilty Pleasures (1st Week March)
18 Shooting Star (2nd Week March)
19 Sweet Dreams (3rd Week March)
20 Lights Out (4th Week March)
21 Wonder-ful (1st Week April)
22 All Or Nothing (2nd Week April)
5x01 Love x 3 (3rd Week April)
5x02 Tina In The Sky With Diamonds (4th Week April)
So we're pushing Regionals back to make room for the filler episodes. In mine, I was going to come up with a reason Regionals was delayed, but that's just me being very nitpicky. This whole thing is me being nitpicky.
Season 5 (2013-2014)
We experience a time-jump in s5, which I will do my best to explain.
We start the season in April (following the above revised timeline). By this point, the episodes neatly fit into four episodes per month, one episode a week.
April
01 Love x 3 (3rd Week April)
02 Tina In The Sky With Diamonds (4th Week April)
May
03 The Quarterback (although in fan fiction I think we should all just pretend this episode doesn't exist)
04 A Katy or a Gaga
05 End of Twerk
06 Movin' Out
June
07 Puppet Master
(08 Previously Unaired Christmas, which doesn't take place within the canon timeline)
09 Frenemies
10 Trio
11 City of Angels (Nationals)
July
(these two eps happen the same week)
12 100
13 New Directions
(Time jump)
Basing this off of Sue's calendar in s6, we can surmise that 05x14 takes place in January 2014, and the episodes are no longer representative of weeks, so it's more difficult to estimate what happens when.
I'm realising now that I've typed it all out that this is a little ridiculous, obviously the glee writers weren't thinking about this when they were writing, but I think it helps to have it written down like this if you care about specificity like I do.
When I was doing my s6 rewrite, it bothered me very much that the timeline doesn't make any sense, so I reordered it, but I prefer to re-order things after I fully understand what is going on first. Lmk if anyone wants my s6 findings.
