My oldest friend Scott and i were at the local mall just fucking around, and then all of a sudden construction crews started tearing it down and in that weird dreamlike way, we suddenly both knew that it had been scheduled for demolition for months. We started walking around, watching the building crumble, waxing nostalgic about the stores that were there when we were kids, and hanging out there as teens, stuff like that. Eventually we left and the outside of the building was utterly ancient, like it hadn’t been touched in centuries. There was an old homeless man sitting outside by a pond who we sat down beside. He started talking to us about this art exhibit about fire he had visited and gotten kicked out of because he kept asking what the point of it was and why it wasn’t more cheerful, and about how sweet cats are, and how having fun is the most important thing there is in life. He was saying it all in this half-rhyming sing-song manner, too. I vividly remember him looking at me in the face, smiling with a knowing twinkle in his eye behind his grizzled beard, and half-singing, “because making people happy is a lot more fun.” then i woke up
