The Nine Orders: Sphere Three
The Third Sphere is the Sphere that usually interacts directly with Mankind. The Principalities are also called the Rulers, and are usually depicted with Crowns and Scepters. The govern large groups of people, such as nations, governments and religious organizations. They bequeath blessings on people and encourage great creativity. The second of this group is the most highly renowned and known, the Archangels. The only Archangel mentioned by name is Michael, and is considered by some to be the only Archangel. In a variety of apocryphal texts, the Angels Raphael and Uriel are considered Archangels, although as previously mentions, there is some consideration for Uriel to be a Throne, based on entomology of his name and another word. Gabriel is also often considered an Archangel. However, he is never actually called an Archangel. Other mythologies believe that an Archangel is a title, while there are also archangels, which are in charge of bringing messages down to Earth from on high. In these myths, Michael is a Seraphim with the title of Archangel, or First rank, and is considered to have replaced Lucifer as the most powerful of all the Angels. Some religions, including Jehovah's Witnesses and Seventh Day Adventists, believe that Michael and Jesus are actually one and the same. Finally are the Angels, the lowest rank in the hierarchy These are the angels that people primarily think of, and they interact the most with Mankind. They are also known as the Guardian Angels, and protect humans in their day to day type needs.
The Nine Orders or Angels: Sphere Two
The Second Sphere is considered the governors of the Angels. The first kind in the Sphere is the Dominions. They are often depicted as people imagine Angels, as beautiful human creatures with large, feathery wings. They also are seen with orbs of light attached to either the top of a scepter and/or pummel of their sword. They are the "Leaders" of all the other lower Angels, and manage their good works. The Seond choir of angels in the second sphere are the Virtues. The are the Angels of movement, and work to move divine energy to the Earth and maintain the orderly movement of the Heavenly Bodies, such as the planets. Finally in the Second Sphere exists the Powers. They are warrior angels, who work out of love instead of fear. They are protective Angels, and some mythologies call them the keepers of conscience and history.
The Nine Orders of Angels: Sphere One
There are, in certain mythologies, nine Orders of Angels. These are divided into three Spheres. The first order in the first Sphere is the Seraphim. Seraphim is Hebrew, and translates as Flames or Burning Ones. They are described in Isaiah as having 6 wings, "two that cover their face, two that cover their feet and two with which to fly". They are said to be too bright, even for other angels to look upon, and to surround the Throne of God while singing his Praises and "Holy, Holy, Holy". Famous among them is Metatron, whom many believe serves behind the throne. The second order belongs to the Cherubim. The word Cherubim comes from the Hebrew Kerubh, which is possibly derived from the Akkadian word karubu, which is a Gracious One, or One who blesses. Cherubim are described in the Bible as bipedal like men, but with four faces and four wings. They have "feet like a calf", are gilded like bronze. They have one wing and one face on each side of their body, and are described as have one face each of a man, ox, lion and eagle. Many mistake the Cherubim, or Cherubs, with the Putto. The Putto are winged male toddlers, and are secular. However, in Renaissance paintings, the Putto were used to represent the presence of God. Some myths claim Satan was a Cherub, and popular artwork paints Satan with cloven hooves for that purpose, The third and final order in the First Sphere are the Ophanim, or Thrones. The word comes from the Hebrew Ophannim, or Wheels. They are mentioned in a vision of Daniel, and described as being a wheel within a wheel, whose rims are covered with a thousand eyes. They are also known as Erelim, or Arelim. Some believe the archangel Ariel or Uriel is of this type, because of the shared entomology.
Fallen Angel Mythology
There are two origins to the mythology of the Fallen Angel. One is the version is found in the Book of Enoch, and says that the angels found the daughters of man enticing, and swore to go down to them. They taught them the ways of plants, and had children by them, the Nephilim, which means giants. These angels, the Watchers or Grigori, were consider fallen, because it was forbidden for them to go down to the daughters of man. This was considered a corruption, and one of the reasons for the Great Flood.
The other is the more commonly know story of Lucifer, the Morning Star, who, in his pride and conceit, saw himself as equal to or even greater than God. He convinced a contingent of angels to follow him in his bid for power, and he changed his name to Satan, or adversary. God cast the rebelling angels from Heaven, thus making them Fallen. Satan then tempts Mankind to increase his domain, to try and prove that he is greater.
Another similar story was that Lucifer was the second in command, and commander of the other angels. Lucifer's conceit wasn't that he believed he was greater than God, but greater than human beings, and refused God when He said that the angels would bow to mankind. For his disobedience, God cast Lucifer and the Angels who agreed with him out of Heaven. It was then that Lucifer changed his name to Satan, and in his envy that his beloved Father favored Mankind, began to tempt them in his attempt to keep Mankind from their loving Father.
Origins of a Word
The English word "Angel" is derived from the Greek word angelos, which is equivalent in meaning to the Hebrew word mala'ak. Angelos, in Greek, means "messenger" and is used for any of God's messengers, be they heavenly or earthly (i.e. Kings and Prophets). The English word "Demon" is derived from the Latin Daemon and the Greek Daimon, meaning deity, spirit or fate. Latin primarily uses the term to mean to mean evil sprits, but it can pertain to any supernatural being or intermediary between man and God.
