Chapter 4
“Wait, so you’re telling me Ghostboy was just sitting there, speaking to a candle?” Luke laughed loudly. Will couldn't see what was so funny.
“Not in a creepy way, I mean, he’s new here, and he does speak with an accent. Maybe he lost someone back home?”
“Not to be a buzzkill, but speculating isn’t gonna make it make more sense,” Leo sighed. “Will, you guys are kind of friends, talk to him if you’re so concerned.” Will was about to reply when he was distracted by the distinct sound of the car he had come to recognize as Nico’s, or maybe his mom’s.
He looked up to see Hazel and Nico jump out of the car, laughing to themselves. Will found himself wishing he would laugh like that with him, and found himself longing for a friendship with the older boy. He watched Nico fish out another cigarette, and hated himself for finding it attractive when he lit it.
“All your smoking will kill you one day” Hazel told her brother, but he just rolled his eyes at her. Will had at least 50 arguments that would surely get him to quit if he really wanted, but this was not the time, nor place, for that.
“Yo, Ghostboy!” He heard Luke yell. Will dramatically facepalmed.
"Ghostboy! I’m talking to you!” Nico looked around confused, but Luke was clearly speaking to him, “Talking to candles? Hanging out in graveyards? Coming to school pale as a ghost and smelling of ancient furniture? I’m starting to suspect you actually are a ghost!” Nico’s eyes flashed with anger, and Will felt his own heart rate starting to speed up. Luke clearly wanted a reaction, and Nico didn’t get that.
“That’s what you get off on? Teasing random guys in the yard, hoping maybe it will compensate for your tiny dick?” Nico replied with a grin.
“My dick is not small, thank you very much.” Luke boasted, louder than necessary.
“Are you hitting on me? Man, I’m sorry, but assholes really aren’t my type.” The raven haired boy quickly replied. Luke’s reaction was instant. He threw himself at Nico, who quickly stepped away, leading Luke to eat dirt.
“I get that you feel like you have something to prove Luke, but I am really not in the mood for it. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. Leave me alone.” Nico walked off and Hazel just stood and watched in astonishment for a moment before laughing and following her brother. Will himself had to suppress a giggle. No one ever stood up to Luke, and honestly this was about time.
Luke got up and wiped himself off, before muttering a quiet ‘faggot’ under his breath. Any joy Will had felt drained out of him at the comment. He reached out a hand to Will, but he didn’t take it. Instead he walked right into the school, ignoring his friends. He had always suspected that Luke had some homophobic traits, and had therefore never technically come out to him, but hearing him openly say a slur? That was different. He needed to think. Or maybe not to think. The music room it was.
He had been getting lost in the music for what felt like seconds, when his phone vibrated. It was a text from Leo.
Leo
dude
what the hell
luke needed us
Will
Did you not hear him?
Leo
we already know he sucks at roasting people
what's the problem
Will
He called Nico a faggot
Leo
no
legit no
luke can be a bit of an ass but hes not like homophobic
Will
Isn't he though?
Leo
Idk
what do u want me 2 do
Will
I don't think i can spend any more time with him
Leo
oh
well
okay
let me think
Will wasn’t the type of guy to skip class, but he didn’t feel like he had a choice today. He wouldn’t be able to face his friends, and what if he ran into Nico, and he hated him now? Will wasn’t sure what to do, so he just left the music room and exited the school. His brother Lee had called a few times, probably wanted to chat about whatever girl he was obsessed with this week, and usually Will wouldn't mind, but today? He was just not feeling up to it.
Will strolled the streets for hours, just walking and thinking, thinking and walking. He wasn't even listening to music. His mind wandered from the interaction in the park (should he have said anything? Done something differently?) to the topic of his own sexuality.
He had known he was bi since he even knew liking boys too was an option. He’d dated girls, and it was fun, but between relationships? Guys were just as interesting as girls.
He’d never actually dated a guy. He had kissed a guy once, a huge mistake when he was 13 and confused, and that guy had just been right there. He hadn’t liked it, had pushed Will away and never spoken to him again. Will was lucky that the guy had never told anyone, he had been able to cowardly stay in the closet at school.
At home was a different deal. Back when his dad was still alive Will had told his parents, and luckily both were supportive. His dad went on a long dialogue about how he was queer too, but never labeled. Apparently he’d been with both guys and girls in the past, and based on Naomi’s reaction, this was something she’d known about, and honestly didn’t care about. He loved her, that was all that mattered.
On Will’s 14th birthday his parents had gifted him a pride flag. He never hung it up, but he kept it stored away in the wooden box under his bed, along with other reminders of his father.
They had always heard stories about families who lost fathers or brothers in the military, but no one was prepared for it to be him. He was kind, and caring. He never minded Naomi’s bipolar disorder, and he had always done what he could to help. Will knew that his mom never thought she deserved him, but Will disagreed. They were perfect for each other, bringing out each other's best sides. He took care of her through depressions and manias. She made his face light up in a way that almost burned. Will had often been compared to the sun, but he was just the moon, reflecting his fathers sunlight.
That’s probably what had hurt the most when he had passed. Have you ever read about what would happen if the sun stopped shining? Everything would go cold, ecosystems would collapse, Human civilization would struggle to survive, and eventually earth would be inhabitable. That's what it felt like when he died.
The family had lost everything. Naomi had fallen into the deepest depths of depression, and Will had to become the adult in the house, taking care of all of his siblings, as well as his mother.
Eventually he realized how exhausted he was. He had been walking aimlessly for hours, and he really needed to sit down and have something to eat and drink. The bell above the door rang as he walked into the nearest store. Somewhere from behind the register he heard a muffled ‘coming!’, and Will froze as he recognized the voice.
Nico di Angelo came to the register carrying a mountain of chips, which he dropped on the nearest empty-ish surface. He looked up to see a frozen Will, and his customer service smile didn’t falter.
“Hello, what can I do for you?” Will just stared, before gathering himself and managing to get out an answer.
“I- ehm, I’m sorry about Luke,” Nico raised an eyebrow and replied with an ‘okay’. “I should’ve said something”
“Yeah, you should’ve, but I don’t blame you. The dude looks like he could beat us both to a pulp without breaking a sweat.” Nico shyly smiled, and Will smiled right back at him.
“Speak for yourself, I’m super strong.” He playfully flexed his muscles and cringed at himself. Since when could he not flirt?
The boys broke out into a laughing fit, and their conversation continued for almost an hour before Will headed off, but not before giving Nico his number. When he got home he immediately checked his phone, finding a couple of texts from Leo, which he chose to ignore, and a text from an unknown number, obviously from Nico.
Nico
Ghostboy here!
It was nice seeing you
You aren’t as much of an ass as I assumed
Will
Yeah, yeah whatever
You’re cool too
Nico
I’ve been meaning to ask
You said you know everyone
Will
Yes!
It’s one of my hidden talents
Nico
What's Percy’s deal
Like, do you know if he’s single?
I was going to ask Hazel but it felt weird
Will’s heart sank. This was just his luck. He finds an amazing guy, who turns out to be queer, but he’s interested in someone else. Fuck. He was just going to have to repress his feelings as much as he could, and forget all about his silly little crush on the new italian guy.
Heres a quote from the next chapter of my solangelo fic
"Have you ever read about what would happen if the sun stopped shining? Everything would go cold, ecosystems would collapse, human civilization would struggle to survive, and eventually earth would be inhabitable. That's what it felt like when he died" - Will Solace, Starman highschool au

I miss solangelo. Like early solangelo. Just pure three days in the infirmary fics, nightmare fluff, highschool AUs, or if someone was really ambitious, quest AUs. Idk about you guys but I remember like, when we had little to no HCs about Will floating around he was just whatever we could make of him from the Blood of Olympus. He was either southern in fanfics or he wasn't. He was either super traumatized from being a healer or he was this sunshine-y golden retriever guy. Like early solangelo fic was just a mixture of spin the wheel on varying wheels and I loved it.
I'm currently writing a slow burn fluff/angst solangelo highschool fic if youre interested!

Chapter 3
TW: Description of a panic attack, mention of past su1cid3 attempt
Nico wouldn’t say that he was a pessimist, but after the awkward run-in with SunBoy last night he would be lying if he said he didn’t run back home and barged into Hazel's room.
The past day had been alright. Turns out Hazel wasn’t a bitch, just an introvert who quite literally had no idea what to do with a big brother, and honestly, Nico wasn’t sure how to behave now either. He knew, realistically, that they would never have a ‘normal’ sibling relationship, but he still hoped, somewhere deep down, that they might become somewhat normal over town.
Hazel was nice, and Nico liked most of her friends. Frank wasn’t too bad either. Apparently he was just shy with a resting bitch face.
However kind her friends may be, Nico knew that he would never feel safe with them. You know when you meet a new person, and you badly want you to click, but something is just a little bit off? That’s how Nico felt with Hazel's friends, but it would work. He really just needed to get through two years, and then he’d graduate and be able to move back home, and go back to his solitude. That was a safe plan, and he’d stick to it. He wasn't going to let some half sister get between him and his goal, and he definitely wouldn’t let a guy ruin it for him.
He’d let guys ruin things for him since even before he realized he was gay. There was the italian guy in the playground in preschool, the mysterious foodie in middle school, and numerous other crushes that he had promised never to tell anyone about. Well, he’d told Bianca, but that didn’t count. He’d told Bianca everything.
He never ended up telling his mom though. She had a tendency to be a bit old fashioned, and Nico didn’t want to risk losing her. He had planned to tell her once he had moved out, but that was before the accident.
Sometimes he found himself talking out loud, as if his family was still with him. Sometimes he cried, because he wished it would’ve been him and not them. Bianca was a genius, both academically and socially. Nico had always just been her weird little brother, who cut his own hair because he hated hairdressers, and only wore clothes a size too big, because he didn't want anyone to look at him. She had a bigger reason to live. Nico was just… kind of there. Didn't do much, didn't say much, and didn’t make much of an impression on anyone.
That’s why he had been so uncomfortable when he saw that Will was watching him in the graveyard. That was Nico at his most vulnerable, and Will had forced himself into his bubble.
“You will not believe what just happened!” He thumped down on Hazel's bed, realizing a little too late that Hazel was in the middle of a facetime call with Annabeth.
“Good evening to you too Nico” she replied with a sigh. It looked like Annabeth was about to say something, but Nico interrupted her.
“Not now Annabeth, this is a missing-fathers-only conversation”. Annabeth opened her mouth, probably to protest, but Nico leaned over Hazel and hung up the phone.
“Nico, I swear to god, if this is not super important I will kill you. We were busy talking”
“Yeah, yeah, Luke’s an asshole, I’ve heard” Hazel glared at him, but Nico just rolled his eyes. He’d had enough of hearing about Luke, especially when no one seemed to want to tell him what he had actually done that was so bad.
“So I was in the graveyard-”
“No normal person hangs out in the graveyard.” Hazel interrupted.
“Shut up. As I was saying, I was in the graveyard,” He felt his breathing speed up and his limbs starting to vibrate. “And I’m talking to Bianca and mom” He felt like a weight was put over his chest “and then all of a sudden Will fucking Solace is there and he’s watching me, and probably thinking I’m crazy, and I really don’t want him thinking that because I’m not crazy, or am I?” He tried to form more words, but his mouth was so dry, and it was like all of a sudden no words made sense, and he couldn't form sentences, he felt like his head was being dunked underwater, and Hazel seemed to seep further and further away.
He could see her opening her mouth, watched her talk, but he couldn’t hear her, and then she was gone and he was left alone in her room. It seemed to shrink more and more as every second ticked by, and he was afraid it would kill him, crush him down into a fine powder, and then finally he would join mom and Bianca again, and he wouldn't be so alone.
He was so alone. So very alone. It was just him against the world.
He felt a lump form in his stomach, and before he had time to react he threw up all over Hazel’s floor. He was startled by the sound of a door slamming open, and he felt someone hold him, talking to him in a soothing voice, but he couldn't hear the words. Then a hand was pressed against his chest, and he noticed it wasn't moving. He wasn’t breathing. How do you even breathe?
The hand moved up into the air, and then down again, over and over again, until Nico realized his chest was supposed to follow it, and it did.
Slowly he seemed to come back to reality, and he realized he was sobbing. Hazel was holding him, and handed him a glass of water. She clearly didn’t know how to handle this, and Nico’s heart sank. He had just come crashing into her life, and now here she was, sitting on her floor, surrounded by his vomit, trying to comfort someone she’d known for less than a day. He realized she was speaking, but her voice was laced in concern.
“Hey, I’ve got you. I’m here.” Nico tried to answer, but no words came out, so he just leaned into her touch and cried. Cried for the first time since the funeral. Felt all of the feelings he had done his best to ignore for months.
He cried out of anger. Anger for that drunk driver who had separated him from his family.
Out of sadness, because he would never see his mom or Bianca ever again.
And out of embarrassment, because Hazel saw him like this. No one was supposed to see him like this. Not even Bianca had seen him like this. God, how he missed her. He would do anything to be with her again.
Hazel grabbed his hand, and he realized he'd been stroking the ugly, horizontal scars on his wrists. Now she was crying too. He had ruined everything, and he just wanted to sink into the ground.
Those scars were his biggest shame. He had been drunk, and angry, and sad, and willing to do anything to be with his family again. He had sworn never to do anything like it ever again
“I’m sorry,” he muttered. “I’m so fucking sorry” Hazel tried her best to steady herself before replying with a shaky breath,
“Don’t apologize for feeling things. How can I help you?”
“You can’t”
“Let me in, Nico. You don't have to be alone in this.”
And so Nico talked, and he didn't stop until the early hours of the morning. When the siblings finally fell asleep, holding each other, Nico felt a little lighter. Hazel was good. He was going to give this a chance.
⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆ 𖤓 ⋆⁺₊⋆ ☾⋆⁺₊⋆
Hazel's alarm went off at 6 am, and Nico rubbed his eyes desperately. It was so early, and he felt like he had only slept for a minute or two. Next to him, Hazel groaned, before falling out of her bed, letting out a little yell. Nico couldn't stop himself from laughing, and Hazel glared at him before kicking him out of her room to get dressed.
Nico took a quick shower and found some clean-ish clothes in a moving box that he had never bothered to unpack. It still smelled of his home back in Italy, and he took a minute to breathe it in before downstairs where she was met by Hazel and Marie.
He grabbed a sandwich and got into his car. It was a crappy RV, that barely even ran anymore, but he had bought it with his first paycheck, and he loved it.
Since it was his, nobody could stop him from smoking in it, so naturally, he lit a cigarette. Hazel joined him and they sat in silence as Nico finished his smoke. When he had put it out, he glanced at her, considering telling her his biggest secret.
“Don’t you even dare apologize for last night”
“I wasn’t going to! It’s just, I want to tell you something,” She raised an eyebrow at him.
“I’m gay.” Hazel hesitated for a second before replying
“Cool. Are you gonna make sure we get to school on time?” She smiled at him, and Nico mirrored her response before rushing off in a speed that definitely wasn’t legal, but he didn't care. He had a sister. He wasn’t alone. She might not be Bianca, but right now, Hazel felt just as safe.

Chapter 2
“Girls love girls and boys (Sophisticated, manipulated)
Girls love girls and boys (Sophisticated, manipulated)
And never did I think that I
Would be caught in the way you got me
But girls love girls and boys
And love is not a choice-”
Will desperately reached for his phone, attempting to shut off his alarm. He HATED Travis and Connor for putting his alarm as that stupid Panic!at the disco song when he had come out to them.
He hated them even more for what they’d said over facetime last night. The brothers shared a room, and their favorite pastime seemed to be facetiming him, Leo or Luke.
“You totally like him”
“I’m just saying Will, I haven’t ever seen you look at someone like that”
“And! He’s sweet”
He could stand a little teasing, especially if it was true, but what he couldn’t stand was getting mixed signals. Nico had been really kind to him yesterday, even though he quite clearly was uncomfortable at times, and then last night he’d gotten a text from him explaining that he was going to hang out with Hazel and her friends today.
Had Nico found Will’s friends annoying? Or worse, was Nico a homophobe, and had Hazel told him he was bisexual?
He made his way out of bed and got dressed before heading to school, where he met up with his gang. The Stoll brothers were bragging to some freshmen about their graffiti job over the school name. He quickly jumped into the conversation and poked fun at his friends but got distracted as he watched a car roll up.
Nico was behind the wheel, and he looked to be in a heated debate with Hazel, who opened her door and let their argument be overheard by everyone in the near area.
“I’m just saying, Artemis would totally beat Apollo in a fight!”
“I literally don't care Hazel, you're just pissed off because I won the game!”
“Who even plays Mythomagic anymore!?”
“You did 20 minutes ago and you have not stopped arguing since we left home.” Hazel went quiet at that, and Will watched Nico smirk before pressing a cigarette between his lips. Nico looked great. There was no denying it. He wore a black t-shirt with a skull on it under the same flight jacket he'd worn yesterday. And he knew how to drive. That was cool.
“Helloooo, earth to Will” Will suddenly burst out of his creepy staring to face Leo who grinned at him knowingly. Of course the Stoll’s had told him. Will really hoped they hadn’t told Luke.
Luke was relatively new to their group. He had joined them at lunch one day and muttered something about an argument with his girlfriend, and that's the last thing they had ever heard about her. He was their friend now, that's just the way it was. Luke was older than the rest of them, and never failed to take an opportunity to tell the others. He was also a football player, which pretty much meant he was their best friend, unless he was hanging with his real friends.
God, Will hated football players. They were loud, mean, and always ended up getting hurt, and since Will volunteered in the infirmary, he was the one who had to patch them up, and they never failed to remark that they didn’t want a queer boy touching them. As if Will would ever be interested in one of them. So yeah, Will hated football players.
But Luke was honestly fine to hang out with. He never said much, and spent most of his time in the gym, or on the field, meaning of course, that Leo, the Stoll’s and Will came to all of his games.
Luke said a quick bye, and muttered something about going to the gym before his first lesson, and to Will’s dismay, the others wouldn’t let him stare at Nico. They dragged him into school and started up a new conversation about birds, or machines, or pranks, or anything. Will wasn’t paying attention.
He was lucky his math lesson was hard. He couldn't seem to wrap his head around the Pythagorean theorem, and Leo wasn’t of any help. He was folding airplanes out of his papers, and sneakily threw them at the teacher when she wasn’t watching.
Will had second period free, and he let his legs lead him to the music room, as they often did. He found himself at the piano, playing and singing some Hozier song he had just learnt.
He really loved music. He always had. His dad used to be in a band, and Will was often told that he learnt to play piano before he could talk, and honestly, that wouldn't surprise him. He loved music, and he loved getting lost in it. There was something about the way his fingers tenderly played the keys, the way the sound left the slightly out of tune piano, that really stuck with him. This was his own personal slice of heaven. He kept playing and singing, playing and singing, and was so lost in the music that he didn't notice the door opening. He was pulled out of his trance by the sound of hands clapping, and looked up to see no one else but Nico di Angelo.
“That was beautiful,” he smiled. “I had no idea you could play.” Will felt his cheeks heat up, and he quickly looked away.
“My dad taught me.”
“I liked it” Nico turned around and started to walk away, but Will needed to ask him something, and quickly tried to save the conversation.
“Hey Nico?” he asked, still trying to find the right words. “Why, ehm, why didn't you want to sit with us today?” Will made a mental note to go bang his head in a wall when Nico had left. Could he sound more pathetic and childish? Nico looked confused for a second, as if deep i thought, before answering.
“Well, Hazel asked me to spend time with her today.” was all he said before turning around, and quickly making his exit. Will knew that there was something he wasn’t telling him.
Later that day Will met up with his friends, and did his absolute best not to bring up the awkward meeting in the music room. He had decided to forget about Nico. He clearly didn’t want anything to do with them, and Will was done chasing after straight guys.
He managed to keep his head off the raven boy until that night. Will was going to do what he always did after school, check up on his fathers grave and leave a flower or two, but as he got to the graveyard, he noticed that he wasn’t alone. He found Nico sitting by the memorial candles, muttering to himself. Will did his absolute best to get closer and hear what he was saying, and after a not-so-subtle fall into a bush, he was finally within earshot, but to his dismay, he couldn't understand a word the other boy was saying. He was speaking in some other language, Italian maybe?
That’s when his luck ran out and he stepped on a branch, which cracked so loudly that Will was sure everyone within 20 miles heard it. Nico looked up at him, and Will watched his expression.
Nicos eyes were bloodshot, as if he’d been crying, and he quickly wiped his nose before running off, not saying a word.
Fuck, Will thought to himself. He had just ruined whatever little chance he’d had with the guy. He quickly dropped off flowers at his fathers grave and headed home, making sure to text the group chat.

Will sighed and dropped his phone to his chest when someone knocked at his door. It was his brother Lee.
“It’s your turn to cook.” Will rolled his eyes. As the eldest sibling in a house of seven kids he naturally got more responsibility. He wished he could get upset at his mother for not taking care of them since dad died, but he couldn't. Naomi Solace was bipolar. She couldn’t help not being able to take care of them, and since she refused to take her meds nowadays Will ended up being the one to care for her and the other kids.
So he had made a schedule. Well. Travis had made a schedule, detailing who was to do what on which days, and apparently today was a Will day.
Honestly, Will was a good cook, and he prepared pasta carbonara for the rest of the kids, and once everyone had settled down around the table and started eating, he brought the eighth plate into his mothers room.
The curtains were pulled down, and he couldn’t see anything, but a soft voice reached out to him from under the covers.
“Will honey? Is that you?” Will nodded, before realizing she couldn’t see him, and let out a soft ‘yes’. He put down the plate next to her bed, and picked up the old plates. She hadn’t even touched them.
He slowly backed into the kitchen, and fell into conversation with his siblings, and finally his thoughts were drawn away from Nico. Instead he thought of his sick mother, and honestly, that thought wasn’t much better.

Chapter 1
If you would’ve asked Nico where he saw himself in the future 5 years ago, he most likely would have answered anywhere but where he was right now. He probably would've told you that he’d be in his senior year of high school, that Bianca would be off to college, or maybe working in their mothers store. He would probably secretly hope that his dad would come back. But alas, none of that came true.
Instead here he was. An orphan with a dead sister and a deadbeat dad who had only ever been in his life when he was a kid. He hadn’t even come to Bianca or Marias funeral, and when the state asked if Nico had any living relatives, he hadn’t even thought of his dad. Well, maybe a little bit, but that was no one's business but his own.
So he had been shipped off to live with his half sister, who he had never even met, and didn't even know existed. They shared a father, but that seemed to be the only thing they had in common.
Hazel Levesque was 15, and apparently their dad had abandoned her and her mom the same way he had abandoned the di Angelos. Her mom seemed to be a bit of a nutcase. She insisted Nico call her mom (weird) and he was forbidden to ask anything about his father (weirder). Needless to say Nico hadn't really found his place with the Levesque’s.
Hazel spent most days in school, and the others out with her boyfriend Frank. Frank did not seem to like Nico at all, and therefore the feeling became mutual.
The accident happened in February. In the middle of the school year. Nico had been so busy with the grieving, funerals, and the move to America and the Levesque’s that he’d missed the rest of his junior year, and now he was going to have to retake it at Hazels school.
Hazel’s mom, Marie, had insisted that he retake his junior year, much to Nicos dismay. He was going to drop out, and as an almost 18 year old he refused, and claimed she had no right to determine what he was going to do, thank you very much. Turns out he was wrong.
Marie had dropped off Hazel and Nico at New Orleans Dam High School. The name was a mouthful, and some genius student seemed to have realized that, and had spray painted over New Orleans, and added an N to Dam, leaving only Damn High School. Nico chuckled at that and earned himself an angry glare from Marie. Whatever. It wasn't like he cared about what she thought. (She had absolutely hated him from the moment he’d moved in. Something about a 17 year old smoking had pissed her off, and she had never gotten over it.)
They made their way to the front office to get Nico squared away. He felt like everyone glared at him, and the lady at the desk handed him his schedule without even glancing at him. Great! This was going to be an awesome day!
Hazel rushed off the second Marie left. Probably to hang out with Frank or Rey- whatever her name was, or any of her other friends, so Nico was left alone.
The bell rang, signaling for everyone to get to their classrooms, and as Nico looked down at his schedule he sighed. How the fuck was he supposed to know where classroom EG956 was.
The corridors quickly emptied, and Nico was left to wander around the four storied school for ten minutes before he gave up, and made his way out to the bleachers to fish out a cigarette from the pack in his jeans. He only had four left, and made a mental note to get more from the corner store Marie had made him get a job at. Maria di Angelo would never make him do anything. She cared about him, and didn’t give a shit if he smoked.
“Se lo faccio da solo non ho il diritto di fermarti", she'd always said with a sly grin. If I do it myself I have no right to stop you. Nico smiled at the memory as he lit his cigarette. Man, he missed her so much. Bianca however had cared that he smoked. She insisted that he was going to face a premature death. Oh the irony.
He didn’t know how long he’d been out there for, dreaming of his past life. It felt like 70 years ago, but it had only been a few months. Somewhere far away a bell rang, signaling that class was over. He was startled back to reality by a soft voice.
He looked up from where he was sitting to see a blond dude, wearing an orange shirt under a green flannel. He wore a concerned expression, and the brightest blue eyes Nico had ever seen. He looked like a ray of sun, and Nico was sure that if he came any closer he would get burned. The boy radiated warmth.
SunBoy, as Nico resorted to calling him in his mind, raised an eyebrow at him and Nico realized that he’d completely missed what he had said. He was going to say something stupid like ´huh`, but before he could embarrass himself the other boy repeated himself.
“You’re not allowed to smoke on school grounds, you know.”
“You gonna tattle on me?” Nico retorted. Damn him and his lack of impulse control. SunBoy looked startled, as if no one had ever talked to him like that before. Maybe they hadn't. Maybe people were afraid of getting burned.
“N-no,” SunBoy answered before regaining control of his voice “I’m just saying, if a teacher, or god forbid one of the football players, catch you, you're dead.” He dropped his clearly faked strong guy demeanor and gave Nico a warm smile. “And I don't feel like patching you up.”
He held out his hand. “I’m Will. Will Solace. Are you new? I don't think I’ve seen you around, and I know most people here.”
Nico realized he was supposed to shake the blonde's hand, and did so, albeit reluctantly.
“Nico.” He replied. He wasn’t sure what else to say. He wasn’t used to anybody but his family paying attention to him, so he just said the first thing that popped into his mind.
“Do you know where classroom EG956 is? I was supposed to have class there but I couldn't find it.” Will’s smile got impossibly bigger.
“I get it. You’re alone at a new school and don’t know anybody, so you can't ask anyone about where to go” Nico hesitated for a second before answering
“I’m here with my half sister, Hazel, but she left me the second we got here.”
“Hazel Levesque?! She’s a year under me, we’ve talked a few times, and she seems really nice, tough shell though.” He laughed, and Nico gave him a small smile back. Will quickly continued, “Where’s your next class? I’ll show you the way, I know this school inside and out”
And so Nico made his first friend in America. Once they had compared schedules to see if they had any classes together (chemistry, Thursdays and Fridays), Will walked him to his classroom and promised to wait for him in the cafeteria afterwards.
Nico was excited at the prospect of having a new friend. Back home in Italy, Bianca had really been his only friend. Something about the autistic-mythomagic obsessed-loser had not attracted many friends, and Nico was fine with that, because he could tell Bianca everything. Maybe Will could be that kind of friend.
His history lesson flashed by as the teacher told the students what they were going to do this year. Apparently the first project was Greek mythology, something Nico already knew heaps about.
As the bell rang, Nico grabbed his letterman bag and flight jacket, and headed out the door. After a few minutes of navigating he made it to the cafeteria, where he found Will sitting next to two boys that must be brothers, a blond dude, and a shorter guy, who was sitting on the table and gesturing wildly with his hands. Will noticed Nico from across the room and gladly waved him over.
“Nico! Hi! These are the guys, that’s Travis and Connor,” he gestured at the two boys who looked identical. They must be brothers, right?
“That's Luke” the blond guy gave him a wave
“And that's Leo, guys, this is Nico!” The boy who had been sitting on the table, Leo, jumped down and quickly embraced Nico, who froze. He was NOT used to strangers hugging him. Thankfully Leo noticed his awkwardness and let go, joining the other boys at the table.
“Sorry man,” he said “I’m a hugger, I should’ve asked before, but Solace has been rambling on about you since we got here and I feel like we’re already pals.” Nico smiled at him and sat down.
“Don’t worry about it.” He looked around the room.
It was full of students, but it didn’t take long before his gaze caught Hazels. She raised an eyebrow at him, but quickly joined in that conversation at her table.
Nico quickly fell into chatter with the boys, and he even found himself laughing out loud at something Travis said once or twice. Maybe this was going to be okay, he thought to himself, maybe he could make do here.
Marie had picked up Hazel and Nico after school, and after an awkward dinner Nico found himself in what he was finally starting to consider his room. His phone buzzed with a text from Hazel, who in the six months he’d lived here, had only texted him twice.

Nico put down his phone and sighed. He couldn't wrap his head around why Hazel had switched on him so quickly. Tomorrow was going to be a mess.
