When you start a Japanese textbook, it's important you stick with it. That's why it's EXTRA important that you pick the right one from the start.
After youāve got some kanji knowledge under your belt (about level 10 or 20 in WaniKani), itās time to pick up a textbook and start learning the framework in which you can use all the Japanese youāve learned.
But which textbook to choose? There are so many. And beyond textbooks, there is a wealth of reference books, dictionaries, and other things that expand on your textbookās lessons. And youāll need those to reach intermediate and beyond.
Weāve compiled a list of the best Japanese textbooks out there to solve this exact problem. Stop spending time searching and start studying.
Before we dive in, hereās a list of things weāll assume all textbooks include:
Dialogues with target vocabulary and/or grammar
Vocabulary lists
Grammar explanations
Exercises
Kanji practice
We wonāt mention these features in the reviews below, unless thereās something noteworthy to say about them.
Also, we wonāt be talking much about the kanji learning these textbooks offer. For the most part, Japanese grammar textbooks teach kanji slowly (and sometimes poorly).
If youāre following our path to Japanese fluency, youāll already know upwards of 650 kanji from your WaniKani lessons at level 20. With so much kanji packed in your brain, not only will these textbooks be much easier to use, but youāll be able to skip the kanji lessons and use that time to move your Japanese ability forward in other ways.

so I actually finished my habit tracker for january which I feel is kinda impressive lmao. the mix of colors are maybe a bit too much (didnāt really think that through) but I like the overall design. I have decided to make another one for february that Iāll post soon!

Sorry that I havenāt been uploading recently Iāve just been busy with uni preparations and stuff. Iām hoping to do some more Spanish stuff soon but in the meantime Iāve been starting to re-learn some basic Mandarin Chinese. The education system I was in ātriedā to teach me Chinese throughout primary school but we never actually got to constructing even the most basic of phrases. So the language seems familiar even though I didnāt actually learn much of it previously.
The colours have been used to show what the brush stroke order is for each character. So far Iāve only learnt some basic vocab for food and weather as well as I have studied someĀ ākangxi radicalsā. I believe that the kangxi radicals are the smaller characters/symbols within full Chinese words/characters. So they are very useful to know as they can give hints to a unfamiliar characterās meaning. (I hope that made sense) Iām excited to learn more but Iāll have to find another app/resource to teach me Mandarin grammar because the app that Iām currently using only teaches vocab.
