A/N: I canât be the only one who was a little shook after seeing Shawnâs NYE photos so after I had some champagne, this fic was born. Happy New Year!!
âWho is she?â Shawn asked, looking across the room. â I- I donât know.â His assistant Jonathan replied. The answer piqued his interest as Jonathan knew everyone at this party. His annual New Yearâs Eve Party was legendary. It was an important part of everyoneâs social calendar. For Jonathan not to know who she was, gave him pause. Â He had pretty much the entire guest list memorised, an impressive feat when one took into consideration the 300 odd people that were currently milling around the space looking expectantly at the large clock counting down till midnight.
Parties like this one were a chance to ring in the New Year in style as evidenced by the endless bottle of Veuve Clicquot floating around the room. Everyone who needed to be here was here, from friends and family to colleagues and potential clients. Anyone who was anyone in publishing was there. The mystery woman had to fit into one of the categories.
Shawn turned back to the woman in question. She had on a black dress that hugged every curve and appeared to sparkle as she moved almost as if she had taken the night stars and stitched them to her dress. Her afro was a perfect halo around her head and her lipstick was so vibrant that he could make out the red shade from where he was on the other side of the room. He watched her laugh at something someone said before walking away and before he could tell what he was doing, he was walking up to her grabbing a champagne flute from the nearest waiter.
âIt looked like you needed a new drink.â He said he walked up behind her. It wasnât a question as he had noticed that her glass was almost empty. She turned around and gave him a nod before placing her empty glass on a nearby table. âCanât have that.â
She had a slight British accent. While he was never one to be swayed by accents, he loved the way it wrapped around her words. Each word had a slight tilt to it even though they were words he heard every day, the way she said them made it special. There was so much more he wanted her to say.
âSoâ he started, looking at her ânot to sound rude but, who are you?â
When she had come to the party, Tamara had not expected to see Shawn Mendes and she definitely didnât expect him to walk up to her and offer her a drink. He was as good looking as everyone said with curls that perfectly framed his angular face and a boyish glint in his eye that showed that there was something beneath the surface that a lot of people didnât get to see.
âAre you usually this brash?â she asked with a raised eyebrow. He could tell from the way she looked at him that he had her attention and intended to keep it that way.
âOnly when there is something I want.â He gave a non-committal shrug as a way of punctuating his answer. Shawn was one of those people that went after what they wanted, sometimes it worked and other times it didnât. He was curious to see what category this interaction would fall into
âAnd what exactly do you want?â Tamara took a sip of her question, the bracelets on her wrist jangling with the motion. She clearly wasnât surprised by his arrogance and straightforward approach and Shawn couldnât blame her. You didnât end up as the youngest editor-in-chief of the biggest publication in Toronto as well as on the  Forbes 30 under 30 list without being a little full of yourself. âYou.â The words were out of his mouth before he could stop them. While he always made it clear when he was attracted to a woman, he was never this blunt.Â
âYou want me? Interesting.â her words suggested shock and curiosity but her tone suggested otherwise. She knew exactly what he was his words meant but she wanted to see just how far he go.
I wouldnât be standing here if I didnât.â She gave him points for his bluntness. She was used to people tiptoeing around her for what they wanted, and Shawn came right out and said it. It was refreshing. âWhat if I donât want to?â
âI could attempt to bribe you with the promise to get you whatever you wanted?âÂ
âAnything you want.â Thought it sounded like a joke, he wasnât joking, if she had asked him to give her the keys to his car, he would have handed them over no questions asked.
She wasnât surprised by his proposal; Â Rich people usually used money to try and get what they wanted. âOh, I donât need your money, Mr. Mendes There isnât anything that you can get me that I donât have or canât get but itâs cute of you to suggest it though.â She had more than ways to get what she wanted and even though she was certain he was joking something about Shawn made her want to say yes regardless.
âHad to catch your attention somehow.â His answer was playful. While he had no idea who she was, he could already tell that she was someone who could go toe to toe with you verbally and he wasnât going to back down.
âHow do you know you have it?â it was a challenge. She wanted to see if he would back down, most people did but Shawn didnât seem like the kind of person to back down easily, but she could be wrong. âYouâre still standing here. You could have easily walked away.â That was the answer she wanted, and she knew Shawn could tell from the way he smirked at her.
âTouchĂ© Mr. Mendes .â she took a sip of her champagne, still maintaining eye contact. It was intense and he couldnât seem to look away. She was challenging him daring him to continue. He was about to say something,  but someone came up to him and tapped him from behind. While he wanted to stay and talk to his mystery woman there was no way he could do that and be a good host at the same time, so he gave her an apologetic look and watched her walk off before turning to the person behind him. After their conversation, he tried to find her but it was as if she had disappeared.
The closer the crowd got to midnight the more excited the crown became and eventually the clock began to countdown from ten and everyone in the room began to chant in unison.
When the crowd got to five, his childhood friend Brian handed him a bottle of champagne ready for him to pop when the clock reached on
Everyone in the room exploded into applause as Shawn pulled the cork from the champagne bottle and let the bubbly liquid fly in the air. The next few minutes were filled with hugs from friends and family as the sound of fireworks exploded throughout the room. In the chaos of hugs and greeting, he felt someoneâs eyes on him. He turned to see his mystery woman looking at him. The two stared at each other for a few seconds before she lifted her glass in salute as if to wish him a happy new year. The look in her eyes was clear, it said: âFollow me.âÂ
