Do you have any tips on realistically writing winged characters?
I feel like writing winged characters (feathered, furred, scaled, astral, bionic, etc whatever your jam is,) very much depends on your own style of writing and what you prioritise for characters, and that you should play around with different ways of writing them for yourself to find what matches you best.
Describing them with visuals can be enough for some, but then there are other ways you can go about it such as:
Sensory Awareness - How aware of different temperatures, textures, weights, pressures that are being placed upon them? Are they sensitive? Are they one with the air and can feel the slightest changes around them, or are they “Yup, that’s wind alright. Breezy.”
Sentimentality Awareness - How do they react to the owner’s emotions? Do they go all fluffy when they’re embarrassed or angry? Do they quiver when they’re upset or stressed? Do they flick and flutter in anxiety? Give yourself an emotional shorthand for what they do because you can have some fun and variety with that between different characters.
Spacial Awareness - How do they interact with the world around them? Are they bumping into things constantly or are they extremely aware of how they move around their environment. Do they have trouble sitting in chairs or going through doors? Or are they in an environment where they only think about it when they accidentally bash their wing like you stub your toe on a chair?
Strain Awareness - Like you have a limit as to how much your arm can bend in certain positions and how heavy a weight you can lift, the same goes for wings, figure out their limits as to how much they can carry and how long for. Saying “they can go at xxMpH” is good but how long can they maintain that for? Probably give yourself a maximum Speed-Distance-Time-Altitude for your characters before they need rest.
Other possible things to think about:
Social context (are they obscure or benign in your own worlds and scenarios)
Size and shape.
Texture
Growth (are they fully grown yet or juvenile?)
Cleanliness
Itchiness (Lice and derbis!)
Injuries and damage
Strength and power
Endurance
Flexibility
How heavy are they?
Posture
Overall Movement
Decoration (either through paint, dye, or jewellery)
How do they interact with clothes?
Hey can I have some tips with drawing Wings or better yet different type of wings, feathers (WHat I meant is that I want to know how to master the shaps of them)
SURE THING!:
Step 1: Get References!!!!!!!!! M A N Y R E F E R E N C E S ! 1! ! !!!
YOU HAVE THE ENTIRE INTERNET AT YOUR DISPOSAL SO MIGHT AS WELL USE IT :D !!!
Step 2: Look at the references and break the wings down by basic shapes and lines. Begin with a simple extended wing reference to begin with.
Start with 3 basic lines for where the bones are and build up from there, by then adding outline shape-blocks. Usually I start with 2 flexible trapezium shapes and a triangle, because that works for me, then I add 2 seperate lines across the wing to see where the different feather layers are going to be.
If you scribble in different colours so that you can see the parts for your future self when you look back at it.
Practice this step at least 20-30 times on a random scrap of paper and just play around with it !
Step 3: When you’ve gotten the general idea of how to do the initial shaping, put the shapes into practice with your ref to better understand poses and movement to create flying boxes.
If you’re looking for a very specific shape of wing, you should use the breakdown over the wing type in question and see what proportions you need to get the shape. Don’t jump ahead to doing any individual feathers or decorations just yet though.
Step 4: Repeat a minimum of 100 times in different ways, not spending any more than 2 minutes on a flying box, and keep going until you feel confident that you can do them on your own.
Mastering something isn’t about making something look absolutely perfect, its about being able to do something without thinking about it, and if you can challenge yourself to draw at least 10 wings a day, by the end of the week you’ll have 70 different iterations and find that each time you’ll get faster at it and be able to do much more dynamic variations.
It doesn’t matter how long it takes, how many you put onto a page, or how scruffy they look, so long as you just practice what you’re drawing until you feel comfortable with it.
Step 5: After you’ve got to a point where you’re comfortable with the shape, then you should start experimenting with how you draw the wings with your own style; eg- if you find that you like to meticulously draw in every single feather, or if you prefer to just keep them simple and clean, thats down to you and what appeals to you.
In the end, you really should just have fun with it, practice, and explore what you can do!
Blue’s Feathers and Wings Compendium: Standard Wing Shapes
Wings Part 1 [Standard ]| Wings Part 2 [Atypical] | Feather Markings | Tail Feathers [Part 1] | Tail Feathers [Part2]
I have expanded the traditional 4 types; Highspeed, Elliptical, Low Aspect and High Aspect ratio, because they were very narrow and vague categories for the most part, adding High Energy, Thermal Soaring, Night Glider, and Passerine wings. I feel that these extra types make it easier to understand and visualize the differences and similarities between wing shapes.
I’ve renamed Low Aspect to Powered Soaring, and High Aspect to Dynamic Soaring for the purposes of the fact that names made it hard to understand purpose and were easily confusable.
A lot of these wing types are also affected by tailfeather shape and size, and that will change their agility and energy expenditure as the tail also generates lift.
Disclaimer: This is in no way intended to be an academic dissertation or proposal, do not treat it as such. It is purely for art and writing references for others, to aid description and inspiration.
Blue’s Feathers and Wings Compendium: Atypical Wing Shapes
Wings Part 1 [Standard ]| Wings Part 2 [Atypical] | Feather Markings | Tail Feathers [Part 1] | Tail Feathers [Part2]
These wings are a small array of Atypical wing shapes, complete with flippered wings, flightless wings, and fancy plumes. Again, creating my own names for some of these wing types since there isn’t any official naming of the different shapes, and I want to make it easily understandable for others rather than complicating these things with academic names.
How do winged people groom themselves?
With a lot of patience.
A lot. Huge wings would have a lot of surface area to cover to keep maintained and clean, for both feathered and membranous wings.
A comb or hairbrush could be useful to brush out the feathers, but probably the best tool for the job for preening/grooming would be hands and nails to be able to lift up the feathers and get under them without splitting apart any of the feather-barbs or causing damage.
It would be best to start off with a shake off or bath to get all dust and debris removed (or blast through the feathers with a hairdryer or leaf blower), but if there's no time or if its not possible, then they could start from inside along the top where they can reach and work down and out to the primaries.
The main things to look out for would be damaged, fraying, broken, or loose feathers to remove them, as well as looking out for any cuts or bruises or feathers that haven’t quite erupted properly from their casings. Most of grooming and preening is about self care as well as maintenance. The last thing you need is an infection caused by a broken or ingrown feather.
It takes a lot of time to go through one wing layer by layer, but if its taking a long time or if there anywhere that is a little difficult to reach, always recruit someone else to lend a hand.

funi in my head, stupid in execution. Anyway, happy pride.

If you're comfortable accusing anyone of faking disability, you're not a real ally to disabled people
One time when I was a kid a group of girls and I had to treat another student for hypothermia by ourselves because she had so many invisible health issues that the adults we asked for help didn't believe us. The student in question was actively hallucinating. When I finally ran for help the people I grabbed were slow as shit to respond, casually joking about how "dramatic" the person in question was.
The kid was picked up by an ambulance 30 minutes later.
Now as an adult working in security I get SO MANY folks- upper-middle aged mostly- coming to me to 'rat out' people they think are faking it.
I was once sent into a bathroom because a client demanded that the "fucker won't get out, so go drag them out"- I was NEVER going to do that, so I did a wellness check instead. You know who it was? A person recently released from the hospital after a car accident. They had a hole in their skull and major hearing loss. They couldn't answer the owner because they couldn't HEAR the owner.
Another time about a homeless man who got around town by kicking the ground from his wheelchair. "You know he doesn't actually need that thing, his legs work fine, it's just for pity points"- Oh, so he's not paralyzed, his wheelchair is performative? Funny story Dale, I actually know that guy, he was backed over by a truck and has chronic pain from his shattered pelvis. But sure, let's make him stand up and walk everywhere so nobody feels too bad for him and tries to help him or something.
"She doesn't need that scooter, I've seen her get out of it."
"Look how fat he is, because he just rides around and refuses to get up."
"She doesn't really need that cane- she comes here without it all the time"
Sincerely, truly, from the bottom of my heart- as someone who isn't physically disabled but hears this shit all the time- fuck off

cis people can reblog this but keep it on subject, please
Happy pride month everyone always remember that the sinkhole has an ecosystem large enough to house not only insects but likely several species of small birds or mammals
