"I’m always on the docks. I have to check on my ship..well, more like a boat, but you always call them ships." Remy smiled. "There’s your sailing lesson for the day."
"Haven't seen you before, that's weird..." Paige trailed off, frowning a tiny bit. "Oh well, I hope I see you more often! Can I seee your ship? I've always wanted to see a real life ship from the.. the deck? Right? And I know it's just a boat really, but I'm a great imaginer. Are you?!"
When I Look at You || Alice and Grace
"Well you can call me whatever you wish to call me. As long as you don’t call me a weed!" She winked at the young girl, a grin playing over her lips. Knowing that Paige would pick up on her reference. It wasn’t a difficult one. But she thought perhaps it would make the girl smile. Something she felt oddly responsible for in the current moment.
Maddie said nothing else but she could see it in the girl’s eyes. She wrapped her arms around her and hugged her close for a brief moment. Just a fleeting hug but it was what she needed at that current moment. For reasons the day dreamer had yet to understand… she felt a protective closeness to young Paige that she’d never found in any other child. Sure she liked children, enjoyed talking to them. Even wanted her own some day. But she’d never felt protective of one. Or wanting to make one smile quite as much as she was wanting to with Paige. Perhaps it was simply because she saw so much of herself in the younger girl and knew what she went through being such an odd young woman.
"I would never, ever call you a weed. That would be so rude! You're not a weed, Maddie. You're... You're more like a flower. A beautiful flower, not one of the talking kind from Wonderland... at least, not unless there was a talking kind that doesn't call people weeds, and instead sits down with them and looks at clouds and writes stories... you could that kind of flower, right? I mean... Isn't anything possible in Wonderland?"
A trusting look beamed from the young girl's eyes.
Tweedlethree ~*Paige, Jefferson and Maddie*~
"You will," Jefferson assured her, offering a gentle smile. He’d make sure of it. He’d bring them both to Wonderland, no matter the cost. A hand grasped his, causing Jefferson’s attention to return to her. Gentle, soft patters traced carelessly against his palm, the echo of a lullaby hummed from her lips. It was one he knew. One his wife had sung to her all those years ago, and one he himself took up once she passed on… Did she remember? Like Alice and her fleeting moments of clarity in her dreams?
Her tracing Jefferson’s hand was a sign that the end of this reunion was coming to an end. Grace was tired. Turning to Alice, he spoke, “Perhaps it’s time we get our Princess home.” There was a flicker of pain, hating the words. Her home was with him. Not with strangers. He knew he shouldn’t, it hadn’t been their fault, but Jefferson was irrational at times. He didn’t like them, her carers. He spared to sympathy to them when it came to taking back his daughter. But Grace was tired, and that was her home… for now.
Maddie’s eyes drifted to the the way Paige played with Jefferson’s hand, the one Maddie’s own wasn’t currently occupying. Her heart felt all funny and weird, and it wasn’t just Jefferson, it was the two of them. Watching the way he looked at her and the way it felt to be so near the two of them. It was an odd feeling that Maddie had never experienced before… well that she was aware of. It felt like… home. Like all the pieces of her life that never really fit were fitting in perfectly, just for this brief moment.
But then she started humming, and Maddie’s eyes snapped to Paige’s face. Her eyes wide in surprise. It was tune she often hummed. One she never could place the origin of. She blinked, her brows knitted as she tried to reason that perhaps it was just a song, a lullaby… like twinkle twinkle little star… right? She mouthed words along, just to see if they would fit. Perhaps it was simply a similar tune. But no— it was perfectly in sync… Jefferson’s voice broke through her thoughts and she smiled and nodded. “Yes, I do believe the little princess ought to get back to her castle. It’s getting late.”
"M'not tired." Paige protested, snuggling closer to Jefferson's shoulder. "Not tired. Nuh uh." her eyelids were drooping, and the little girl went back to her humming, unable to summon the energy necessary to stay focused for long.
Wait, no. She had a point to make. "I don't wanna go home. I want..." she trailed off once again, losing interest in the argument. "um... I want to go... um. To Wonderland. Mmmhmm."
Her nose was buried in Jefferson's coat, and her small hand went from tracing his to finger the scarf directly in her line of sight. "I don't remember scarves. They're weird... Hm."
She was falling asleep. Definitely.
"Thank you very much. Just trying to spread some positivity today. I like my hair too. It’s pretty cool. I wish it was as pretty as you Paige." Remy smiled and held out his hand, "I’m Remy and it is very lovely to meet such a nice person as yourself."
Paige beamed at the compliment. "Nice to meet you too, mister. How come you're on the docks today?"
Happy Father's Day! || Jefferson and Paige
Jefferson listened intently, eyes searching her face as she spoke. It may not have made much sense, but truth was never quite sensible. A small smile was offered when she agreed to trust him, hoping Grace would take his word for truth and allow it to sooth her worries. As she questioned him, he hummed in response, prompting her to go on.
Her question shattered him, the smile washed away in fear and heartbreak. Was this what she believed? What she feared? Such tremendously horrid and dark thought plagued her. That she would believe him to forget her. If only she knew. “Princess,” he started, cupping her face gently and guiding her to look him dead in the eye. “You are not stupid, nor foolish or naive. But hush those fears, for they will never come to be. Gr- Great Princess,” he caught himself before speaking her name, “Not even the darkest of magic could force me to forget you. You are the most important person in my life, and I would cross worlds and fight even the Jabberwocky to protect you. I will never forget you.”
Jefferson's words made Paige cry with true desperation, uncontrollable sobs wracking her chest as she threw her arms around her friend -her best friend's- neck. She clung to him with all of her strength, and just cried. "And I'll never forget you, I promise! I promise!" her head leaned against his shoulder in a crook that seemed perfectly molded to hold it. "And if I ever, ever did, I'd always come back no matter what, okay? You could be all the way in Wonderland and me be here and it wouldn't matter at all because you're my best friend in the whole-" she broke off for a moment, sniffling and trying to control her sobbing. "-in the whole universe and nothing will ever, ever change that!"
Then words were lost, and the little girl simply cried.
"You’re beautiful. Have a nice day."
"Wha.... um. Thanks! I think you're handsome. And I like your hair. It's all.... spiky. I'm Paige! Who're you?"
Happy Father's Day! || Jefferson and Paige
Jefferson offered a broken smile when her eyes finally met his. He hated seeing her so upset, and it hurt to know he was to blame. Why did his problems have to become hers? Was he doomed to forever hurt his daughter?
"Not many things do. What is odd to one person it normal to another. Tears," he reached up brushing a tear from her cheek, a pained and tired smile on his lips, "are an expression of emotion. They’re not always for when you’re sad. Sometime tears are needed.. to heal us. That’s why when you finish crying, you feel refreshed. Emotions are beautiful, and they don’t always make sense." Sadness flashed in his eyes, lips quivering in a hurt smile, the lump in this throat making it hard to breath deep. "I’m sorry, dear Princess. It is not your fault, and I promise you," he held her shoulders looking her in the eye, guilty and pleading, "you are only healing me, and one day I will smile without tears. But that day.. is not today. I’m still.. emotional, and I need to heal. Sometimes.. tears are necessary. I know it’s not fair.. not to you, and I’m sorry."
Paige didn't understand how tears were supposed to help. Lately she only seemed to feel worse after she criec. but her mother said that was pretty normal for girls her age. She bit her lip, thinking his words through. It didn't make sense for tears to heal, and it was simply mind-boggling to her that she might be one to heal Jefferson. Shouldn't that be someone else? someone better than her? Someone like Maddie, or his daughter Grace?
Still, se sighed after a short time and met his eyes once again. "I don't get it." she muttered, gnawing more violently on her lower lip. "But I trust you. And if you say that I'm helping, and that you're getting better, then I believe that. Just... Jefferson?" There it was again, that nagging in the back of her mind when she said his name. Like it wasn't the right thing to call him. She ignored it in the way that she ignored all things that bothered her.
"Promise.... when you're better, promise you'll still be my friend, okay? I don't.... I don't want to lose you... -your friendship, I mean. Like, I want to still be able to talk about Wonderland and all the beautiful places you've gone to. And I want to do it when you're happy, too. I-I'm scared, f-for some reason that when you're all better, you won't need me anymore. I-is that stupid?"
It felt stupid, especially because the tears came back in full force when she got to saying it. The poor young girl was not used to feeling such deep emotions, and they scared her.
Tweedlethree ~*Paige, Jefferson and Maddie*~
Both of them were looking at his expectantly, an echo of the curiosity of their past lives. Storybrooke certainly hadn’t robbed them of that. He breathed a laugh, though it was cut short as Grace snuggled closer. He wanted nothing more than to embrace her and never let her go, but he never could until the curse lifted. Until then, he had to restrain himself. Gods, how it ached not to give in. How he wanted to surrender. “Of course,” he piped in, forcing himself to ignore the closeness of his lost daughter, “Oz. The Enchanted Forest. I once made a friend in one Dr. Frankenstein, though his world dull and grey, lacking any form of magic. I wouldn’t recommend it for a holiday. But, yes, with the hat one could travel to countless worlds.”
"Not a thing, Princess. One might find it rude to be called a thing," he chuckled knowing full well how easily she could be insulted. "Strange as it may seem, in a world where utter nonsense is nothing short of sensible and creations one must see to believe, what I adored most about Wonderland was none of this things, but what reminded me of a world past Wonderland. Alice," his eyes flashed to Alice, a faint smile on his lips, before returning to his daughter, "Alice was the most important and my most favourite of all that Wonderland graced me. Without her, Wonderland was never quite complete."
"Oh, that sounds absolutely wonderful… Wonderland sounds lovely, but being able to see them all??" She sighed happily, momentarily lost in the thoughts of all the other worlds. What were they like? Surely they knew Wonderland and Oz, and now this grey world…. "I wonder what they’re all like…" She grinned looking up at Jefferson, making a mental note to ask him about everywhere he’d traveled or thought he would go by hat. There had to be so many different worlds to see and so many different things to try! Imagine all the foods! Imagine all the odd customs and games and styles of dressing! Perhaps there was a world where strange things like wearing a lampshade for a shirt was perfectly acceptable.
Maddie listened, her attention on Jefferson completely. Her heart giving a tha-thump immediately when he said Alice. She knew he called her that, but the way he looked at her, she smiled back at him. Her heart felt all funny, like she’d just been running laps around Storybrooke.
Paige sighed happily, watching the way that Jefferson looked when he spoke about Wonderland, and Alice. Her eyes flashed to her Maddie, their Alice, and her eyes began to sparkle. Yes, they were definitely in love.
It was quiet for a few moments as they all sat in the grass, all thoughts of Easter and Eggs forgotten. "I'd like to go there." Paige said finally, in a quiet tone so unlike her usual chatter. "I'd like to see Wonderland... and all those other worlds..." she thought it should bother her, leaving home behind, saying goodbye to her parents, but the young girl found the idea more freeing than anything. Traveling with Maddie and Jefferson... as long as she got to come back and visit, she thought that it would be alright. Mother had always said she was too adventuresome for her own good.
Without thinking about it, she grasped Jefferson's hand in both of hers and began to play with it. Moving the fingers in different positions, tapping or crossing them, tracing the lines of the palm. She was humming, too, something that sounded a bit like a lullaby, though not one that she could quite remember.
When I Look at You || Alice and Grace
She grinned. “Good, ‘cause you’re stuck with it now.” Maddie couldn’t hep herself, the name suited and she couldn’t think of anything better to call her. It was oddly suiting for the young girl. An adorable nickname for someone so sweet. It was funny, looking down at her. Maddie swore she actually could be her little sister. The expression on her face was reminiscent of Maddie listening to her father’s stories. There were a few pictures of her with an expression so similar it was a wonder they weren’t related.
"But what do I call you?" Paige wondered, biting her left thumb thoughtfully. It seemed like Maddie should have a name that was just as suiting as Paige's own... Little Mouse, but she just couldn't think of it. "You should have a special name as well, don't you think?"
I love you, she thought, but didn't say. She'd already said it, but it seemed to want to come from her again. And again. Almost like a song, the words ran through her head and tickled her lips over and over, as if a dam had broken forth inside of her and a thousand I love you's were trying to force themselves into a tiny amount of time. Like they had just been waiting to make themselves heard.
When I Look at You || Alice and Grace
Maddie hugged her back tightly, without squishing the younger girl. There was a connection there that nearly knocked Maddie off her feet. Something she’d never really felt before. A familiar, but foreign feeling. Sort of… familial love. Her mother never really loved her, not on the level of understanding someone has like Maddie did with Paige. Her mother loved her at a distance. Maddie didn’t realize Paige was feeling the same thing.
She leaned down and brushed her thumbs over Paige’s cheeks, wiping away the tears. “Nothing to thank me for, little mouse.”
The name shocked something inside of Paige very deeply, jarring her at her very core. It was... right. Little Mouse. Nobody had called her that before in her entire life, she was sure of it. And yet, it was as familiar as her dreams, or the sound of her own laugh. The gasp that left her lips was automatic, as was the widening of her eyes and the gigantic grin that followed immediately after. "I like that name," Paige informed her big sister.
Tweedlethree ~*Paige, Jefferson and Maddie*~
"One could ask the same of how a girl can fit down a rabbit hole. Or how they could possibly travel via looking glass. It’s simple, really. If the hat is infused with magic, one simply needs to spin it and it will create a portal. Much like the tornado that took poor dear Dorothy." He bopped Grace on the nose with a finger, his body hyper aware of just how close he was to his daughter. How he ached to have her at his side again. It was too much to bare, his voice catching for a moment. This was all too familiar.
"It’s much the same, something similar to a whirlwind pulling you into the vortex within the hat. I suppose you could say you shrink, yet you do not change. One does not need to eat to regain their size."
"Well the looking glass would be just like a door, you see. And Rabbit Holes to Wonderland aren’t nearly as small as one may think!" At least in her stories they weren’t… in her dreams the white rabbit opened a portal for her. Leading her back to the world she’d become so familiar with each night in her dreams. "Hat sounds like a delightful way to travel!" She grinned.
"If you did you’d have to carry an eat me pastry with you as soon as you arrived in Wonderland! Otherwise who knows what may get you! Can a hat take you other places? Or simply Wonderland?” Her own expression very similar to the girl’s next to her. Curious, eyes alight with the burning questions she asked. Just like when they’d first met. She’d asked him all about other worlds. Without knowing her daughter would grow up to ask many of the same questions.
"Can you, can you?" Paige echoed the question. "Like could you take it to Oz? Or any other world? Oh, wouldn't that be so amazing?" The little girl snuggled in closer, imagining really traveling to other words, and wondering in the very back of her mind why it wasn't as easy to talk to her parents as it was to talk to Maddie and Jefferson... In the past, she'd thought that people just lost their imagination when they grew up, but here were these two wonderful grown ups who made perfect sense to her. It was perplexing, and more than a little sad.
But that was in the very back of her thoughts. More than anything, the young girl was enraptured in Jefferson's stories. "Jefferson," she said. "What's your favorite thing about Wonderland?"
I lost a tooth! || Peg and Paige
I love mint chocolate chip! It’s my favorite! But that sounds really good, do you want to go get some now?
R-Really? For serious? I can't go by myself, but I bet I can go with you since you're a nice grown up and stuff! I just.... yay!!!
I lost a tooth! || Grace & Mary
Mary made a face scrunching up her nose and shaking her head, “that isn’t true not at all so don’t worry about it. But brushing your teeth is very important so do keep doing it and you are very right about being safe instead of sorry.” Mary smiled a little before giggling causing her curls to bounce around.
Paige's nose scrunched up as well in response to Mary's expression. "It would be horrible, don't you think? To have trolls living in your teeth? I imagine it would get in the way of eating and drinking and oh, what if you swallowed one?" she was horrified. It was completely natural for her to explore thought patterns like this one, words just tumbling from her mouth in the exact instant that they appeared in her mind. No filter, her mother always said.
Happy Father's Day! || Jefferson and Paige
"No. Not always," he replied, mind cast back to the shattered tea cups and stains scaring his house. He always cleaned up, of course, but he rarely cried anymore. Anger. It was always a deep seeded anger boiling into wrath and self-loathing. It was only since Grace had entered his life again that he’d fallen back on tears. How was he suppose to explain the tears were better then the alternative? He breathed a shattered sigh, a tired smile forming for a moment at her words. She wanted to fight for him, but how could she tackle his own demons? "Princess," he replied slowly, ducking his head to catch her eyes. He needed to make this better. For her sake. For his Grace.
"Do you remember Easter? When I spent the day with Alice and you? It was the happiest I’d felt for many years. How can you say it’s your fault when you brought me such joy?” he asked, wiping a tear from her cheek. “I am the happiest when I’m with you. I’m just not use to being happy.”
Paige was adamantly not looking at him. Her own tears were making it hard to see and burning her face when she tried to blink them away. Stupid, stubborn tears. The little girl didn't want Jefferson to see her cry. She loved him like he was family, and she knew that grown ups didn't like tears. Dad always said she had to be strong, and brave. His big little girl.
She wanted Jefferson to see her like that, too. So she was looking away and sniffling quietly when he leaned in. It took her several seconds to bring her wet eyes to meet his.
"That doesn't make sense." she declared, lower lip protruding. How come he cried when he was happy? What did he do when he was sad, then? Laugh? She sighed. "I just want you to smile, Jefferson. But it seems like every time I try to make you smile, you cry instead, and that's not fair."

That’s sweet, using your money to make other people happy.
Me? Well I like ice cream and I think that would be enough for a scoop.
Ooooooooooooooooooh, Ice cream is yummy! What's your favorite? Mine is double chocolate chip with fudge and bananas. Have you ever had that? It's so gooood!

Mary smiled and nodded her head softly, “Yes I am very sure. you are far to young to worry about that now and I am very sure you take good care of you teeth.” Mary giggled she always had a soft spot of kids. Her mom said it was a sign she was going to be a good mother herself someday. “Well thank you very much you are just too sweet to not be nice to.”
Paige giggled and nodded, letting her hands drop away from her mouth. "I do! One time this boy at school -his name was Trevor Morgan and he wasn't very nice, you know- anyways, he told me that if I didn't brush my teeth then little trolls would come and live in my mouth and build little houses! I didn't really believe him but still, I think it's better to be safe, don't you?"
She searched Mary's eyes earnestly, a tiny smile curling at the left side of her lips.
