Bear McCreary’s Orgasm
So the job of a conductor is to 1. Keep time 2. Be an emotional focus for the musicians. As bugs bunny showed us, the conductor demonstrates TO THE MUSICIANS the emotional cadence of the music - in order to unify the orchestra in its presentation of the musical moment. Yes, music is fun. Yes, it’s also work.
What I saw with McCreary’s “performance” at E3 was a man enraptured in his own composition, indulging in a furrowed brow, a little smile. What I did not see what a man engaging with his orchestra. It was like he was at home, swinging his arms at his speakers. Dude, you have musicians in front of you that are paying attention to you. Do your job.
My thoughts about that actual “overture” aside (although I expected more from McCreary than a boring five minute crescendo to nothing -- those three notes appearing more effectively in a 20-second clip from Badelt’s Curse of the Black Pearl) I was half-amused, half-disgusted by what I was seeing, like watching someone masturbate to their own hand-drawn vanilla pornography.
blankverse, two years later
it’s a little under one week before blankverse aired its last episode (although that was technically on a sunday). for those who have been following me since the beginning of emma approved, you might have witnessed the amount of posts i was making about this show. for those who don’t know this show–and it’s not surprising, since it didn’t get a lot of attention at the time–blankverse was a show that modernized shakespeare and his contemporaries into a modern-day university context. it was essentially an elizabethan era university au.
there are still aspects of my endearment to the show that i can’t fully explain. i only know what it represents to me as a consumer of literary inspired webseries and in the larger context of the evolution of these shows. so we can measure the show against some facts that we now have with the benefit of time. to my surprise, blankverse was actually the predecessor to quite a few things in the literary vlog webseries world, which i list out. finally, i will elaborate on what this show represented to me at the time and now.

TOTALLY FORGOT I HAD BOTH THIS TUMBLR AND A BAND EMAIL. Why do i get band emails when I always change my band name? Ughhh.
New content coming soon.
Reeyoonighted and it feeeeels so gooood
We’ve been a little too busy with crazy missions each week to properly let you guys know, but here it is:
we’re competing in CBC Comedy Coup for a chance to make more Blank Verse, with some ca$h money$ for all involved this time!!!
We’re making pithy videos each week to prove to everyone who didn’t watch the show that we’ve got the chops, but you probably already know whether you’d like to see more of Will, Ben and “the gang.”
We’ve already advanced to the top 110 teams, but we’ll be needing !!!FAN VOTES!!! to advance to the top 50. Voting opens on Thursday and, once you register, there’s a bunch of tricksy ways you can earn extra votes, by watching and rating and commenting on other projects (may we recommend Killing It, by some of the creative team behind AoJE?)
Xander Williams and Charlie Allison are putting their heads together to become the ultimate screenwriting super team for the pilot, and we need your support to shoot it so when you’ve got the time, please check out our page, try not to think about how we ran the most unsuccessful Kickstarter campaign of all time, and, come Thursday, GIVE US ALL YOUR VOTES
(jk lol give us the amount of votes you think we deserve)
Xe Returns
So the Vancouver School Board has made official the gender neutral pronouns xe, xem, and xyr.
This has made writing the new pilot of Blank Verse very easy for me, as during Season 1 used a lot of “s/he” and “their” which bug the hell out of me.
So, as Webster has not yet been cast, xe remains genderless (and thus far exhibiting no sexual preference) (spoilers?) so what I’m basically saying is go to http://comedycoup.cbc.ca/blankversemidsummer if this kind of writing process is one you want to encourage in the world of television.
If this becomes a thing, it’s gonna become a pretty rad thing.
Friendly reminder that there’s this cool web series called Blankverse that follows Shakespeare and his contemporaries if they were in a modern university. And several of its episodes pass the Bechdel test!
benjaminajonson is back!! (Hopefully). Check out the amazing emma-middleton talk about how you can help us get Blank Verse onto TV- and be sure to follow our new social media channels for some exclusive content! (We hear that lostnumbersband aka Will Shakespeare might have made a special video for our subscribers as well!)

Hey Tumblingers.
I thought it might be a good time to update you on stuff, since I’ve been seemingly MIA since I moved to Toronto. Here we go!
LOST NUMBERS - I have been writing pieces of songs, but with the band back in Vancouver, it looks like we won’t have any real updates until 2015. I know our two fans are freaking out right now, bless their hearts. If you don’t know my band, we write folk-pop about mythology and video games and stuff. Our EP can be downloaded by donation (suggested donation $0) at http://lostnumbersband.bandcamp.com
THE JENOVA PROJECT - You may not know this but I novelized the popular video game Final Fantasy VII some years ago and this winter I took to a second pass - a complete new draft of the first book in the series has been, uh, drafted, and I’m looking for beta readers WHO ARE NOT FANS! If you or anyone you know are a) constructive critics and b) not final fantasy fans and c) open to reading an action/fantasy story, send me a PM or reblogply or however this works.
IMPROV - Getting back into it! Recently I performed at FOOT: Festival of Original Theatre. A colleague of mine had devised (through some unspeakable arithmancy) a system that allows improvisers to interact with a scrim, a camera, a projector, and a kinect *while they are improvising* so we could play fun new games like “Play with yourself on stage” and “record normal sentence from a volunteer and proceed to thoroughly humiliate their projector-born ghost” and my favourite game “infinite Xander.” Improv is my priority over acting, it looks like (exception: Stratford)
BLANKVERSE - has been getting some bad press, to my dismay! I was gonna say “can’t please em all” but this is a topic I care a great deal about and the more discussion we can have about it the better so here we go!
(Please know that these are my views only and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the producers. Ryan Caron, a producer, has already released a very eloquent apology — before I continue I insist you read it because I agree with every letter.)
So apparently there is the idea that our genderblind casting (and maybe also my genderblind writing?) wasn't so much "blind" as it was a thinly veiled scheme to turn disgusting immoral ho-mo-sexual indiscretion into nice PG heteronormative paste. It's a sensible enough hypothesis, but it's not a great theory.!Confirmation Bias — you are obviously intelligent enough to be outspoken on social justice issues so I don’t need to explain it. Please beware that you aren’t falling prey to it. Dig deeper before bashing us. Some of the writers are queer/gay/poly (myself included) and some of the producers are queer and as a writer/actor I know for a fact that Will is pursuing more sex with men than women on this show. If it isn’t apparent enough, that’s GREAT! Let’s get that conversation going. But include us, because WE ARE ALL ON THE SAME SIDE.
What I love about web series is being unchained from the Hollywood bullshit we would usually have to deal with. Our priority was genderblindness, it was assumed by me that every character was some degree of pansexual except for those whose sexualities are irrelevant (it is my belief that Liz - and the monarch who inspired her - was asexual). It is a very very unfortunate coincidence that the two clearest “pairings” are both M/F, but it IS a coincidence.
I am sorry that I didn’t catch it. For the record, my OTP is Will/Henry. It wasn’t until I watched the show that I realized how little of the subtext comes through when all these Het pairings bowl over everyone else.
I apologize. I’m new at this. Also, thank you for calling us out on our bullshit. We came by it honestly, but it smells just as bad.
Let’s work together to make the next thing better okay?
