Hoar frost on plants in very early November, 2019. A cold front had come through the night before, on Halloween. The front brought strong winds, along with severe thunderstorms formed along a squall-line. A few of these storms, once they reached areas with warmer, wetter air in the North Carolina Piedmont, became tornadic. The most important factor making them severe in the western part of the state was probably how fast they were moving forward, though. The winds along the front were strong on their own, even without any enhancement from the storms.
In the wake of the front and its associated squall-line, a cold, high pressure airmass settled in. After nightfall, beneath mostly clear skies where the winds were calm, the surfaces of the Earth and of these plants lost much of their heat to radiative cooling. When this happens, surfaces can easily cool below the frost point of the air. Crystals of frost can continue growing until they're fairly large, with the already existing ice serving as a sufficiently cool surface for further freezing.
Raindrops, the morning after the passage of Post-Tropical Cyclone Olga in Western North Carolina. Olga started as a cluster of thunderstorms spun off from the Central American Gyre, a diffuse area of low pressure and convection created by sea breezes in Southern Mexico and northern Central America. This cluster developed over the Gulf, with warm sea surface temperatures allowing it to briefly form a tropical cyclone. This system developed pretty rapidly from a tropical depression into a named storm, but windshear created by a trough aloft kept Tropical Storm Olga highly asymmetrical and prevented its developing into a hurricane despite warm waters. This trough eventually played a role in the transition of Olga from a warm-core to a cold-core low drawing its energy from baroclinic factors. Olga was one of the shortest lived tropical cyclones on record, identified as a tropical storm for only six hours.
Olga still brought a plume of tropical moisture north from the Gulf, bringing significant rainfall to drought-stricken parts of the Southeastern United States.
All hail Sol Invictus.
Severe thunderstorm with near hurricane force winds. A mesoscale convective system formed along a cold front to the west. This storm, along with several others, formed along the MCS' outflow boundary.
The safest place to be during a severe storm is indoors, on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and well away from windows. These storms kill people. Let others, like me, make poor life choices for you.
Sunset under a shortwave trough aloft, which generated just enough uplift to spawn some altocumulus at sunset.
Quick doodle that I decided to throw together last night of Touka Satomi, one of the main antagonists of the Madoka Magica portable game, Magia Record.
Touka is an unusually young, but unusually intelligent, magical girl who decides to pave the road to liberation with lots and lots of bloated corpses. Autocorrect insists that her name is really "Tokers", which kind of fits this more traditionally cute version.
Quote is from Blood Meridian's Judge Holden.
Madoka Magica x Berserk. I don't know why I made this, but I'm not sorry.
"Thee honorable child, concentrated by the laws of causality, The Shooting Star, now art the Chosen One at this time, at this place. The one chosen by the hand of the Great God, we art kinsmen, oh blessed Witch of Mercy."
