Full confession:

This may be a borderline blasphemous confession in this fandom, but I really don’t like Lotus all that much and I’m super happy he’s not a marriage candidate. Just based off his own dialogue he comes off as a borderline incompetent man-child. I ain’t got the time or patience to coddle and protect him from his mean boss who he freely chooses to work with. Not to mention the infantilizing the fandom does to him. He’s a grown man at least in his 30s, not a kicked puppy precious baby angel. I’m not saying he has to be a prime buff alpha male, like the other Lulukoko guys. He definitely shouldn’t. Variation in villagers is great. But the way he talks and acts, and the way fans treat him, just makes him look like a pathetic child who needs Farmer to hold his hand 24/7. It puts me off the character almost entirely.

I have no issue with people disliking the character, and I 100% respect the opinion of the submitter. There’s nothing wrong with disagreements. I am not trying to change anyone’s mind with this post nor do I want to. Diversity of opinions is what drives fandoms and if everyone agreed on the same things it would get boring. Not to mention echo chambers aren’t fun. I’m just here to toss in my two cents.

I’m curious, what makes him a man child? He has severe confidence issues and social anxiety. He doesn’t come off as needing the farmer to protect and coddle him, in fact he does the opposite. His daily dialogue lines states that he wants to be left alone and that he doesn’t want to the farmer to hang around him too much. He doesn’t trust the farmer at first and thinks they are talking to him as a prank.

Also he acts that way because the majority of the villagers are not that nice to him. When I was a kid I was severely bullied and had very few friends. Speaking from personal experience it is extremely hard to be confident and stand up for yourself when almost everyone around you treats you horribly. I can understand why some of the villagers feel the way they do about him. He does need to stand up for himself more. However the way the dialogue is worded makes the villagers sound rude. Many fans find it frustrating that there is nothing you can do to help him become more confident and develop.

As for the way the fandom treats him- to an extent I do agree that sometimes people get overly defensive and go too far with treating him like a precious angel. I get frustrated when I make a post and people reblog it with “PROTECT HIM” or “Rescue him from Mithra.”

He did choose to stay with Mithra and begged her to be her assistant. What the fans have an issue with, however, is the way she treats him. I love Mithra but there are some things that I will not defend about her. Her friend event reveals that she hits him, and in some of his dialogue he reveals that she leaves bruises. She calls him useless (saying that Tigre would make a better assistant that he ever would, saying he is slow and stupid like a turtle, etc.) It doesn’t help that for the most part her treatment of Lotus is played for laughs.
