There’s no convincing her, it was both annoying and helpful. Clara was good at calling people on their bullshit, so Matt kept his mouth shut and stared at her as she spoke. The more she said, the more irritated he became. Sometimes it’s hard for Matt to mask his feelings, other times he’s an open book and the rage is slowly spilling out.
“I haven’t— but I didn’t come seeking you out first.” he says it a bit more forceful than he means to. Clara is important to him too and this shit was definitely not her fault, but calling him selfish irked him. “Clara, what happened while I was gone?” Was it something he could have stopped and was it his fault?
“That’s for Kizzy to tell you,” she says quietly, but firmly. Clara doesn’t miss the way he does his best to express how he cares for her, but it doesn’t sit right with her. She can’t move past this feeling of abandonment and it hurt. She looks past him, drying her hands with a dish towel on the kitchen table. Throwing it back down, she collapses into the nearest chair and buries her face in her hands for a moment. Just to get her bearings.
When she reemerges, she looks into his eyes reluctantly. “Is there anything else I can do for you?” There’s a sort of detachment in her question, as if this was a business transaction. But she’s shit at this, and soon she’s standing up quickly and brushing past him to get to the front door. Wrenching it open, she looks back at him. “If that’s it, I’m sure you have more important stuff to get to.”
