POV: you are some poor, random human shopkeeper trying to survive in late first-age Beleriand. An eight foot tall ef with a face that is 70% scar tissue and 30% murderous intent just walked in. He is followed by two small children. He comes up to your counter and asks you how much human children need to eat.

The small children are definitely not human.

Elrond's outfit is based off of a melange of ancient dress, most notably Assyrian, with some medieval dagging in there to evoke the shape of leaves. Gandalf is based largely on the Quechua people who inhabit the Andean region of South America with some Viking touches here and there.

Something I feel like is very underrated about Tolkien’s writing is the way he always writes his aristocracy as having jobs.

Like most fantasy stories I read/see have a privileged ruling class whose day job is to either do politics or be idly wealthy. And then you have LOTR and the Silmarillion, where the kings and princes and queens are constantly identified by very traditionally lower-class job. Fëanor and Celebrimbor’s defining trait is their smith work. Elrond and Aragorn are constantly referred to as capital H Healers. Bards like Maglor or Daeron or Luthíen seemed to be a point of pride for their families/cities.

Idk it’s just a really cool take, esp from a British author considering the historical British “noble class” is where most of these fantasy stories draw their worldbuilding from.

If you’re on LOTR Pinterest, you’ve prolly seen this exact image. I like it, conceptually, but I think it needs some… tweaking. So I did this tweaking on da bus today.

And I really like it and I might make this version in full, please tell me the creator of this so I could credit them for the original loveliness it is, but then I made the true one.

And, I think I am now fully sure about this and this is my submission to its existence.
