Hey Silmarillion fandom, anyone still active around here? :)
Thereâs no escape man
Was anybody going to tell me that Elvish Heavy Metal was a genre. Was that a thing we were ever gonna mention
Maglor and Elrond by Jenny Dolfen
The thing is I don't think Maedhros was a parentified older sibling, because Feanor and Nerdanel were royalty, and they would have had nannies and nursemaids and tutors for all their kids. So you wouldn't have had the older kids taking care of the younger ones, because they have The Help. And honestly the parents wouldn't be doing most of the childcare either. They would spend time with their kids of course!! But I don't think Nerdanel was changing diapers.
My recent post speculating on Glaurung with the ability to mimic voices has me once again thinking about just how terrifying of a villain he is
Heâs something so much worse than just a dragon.
Indeed most descriptions of him call him a spirit or creature in the form of a dragon, an ominous ambiguity similar to descriptions of Ungoliant as taking the form of a spider.
Glaurung is capable of both catastrophic, widespread violence and destruction, as well as devastatingly personal annihilation.
He can warp minds and steal memories and make you wander for weeks all while thinking your journey was your own idea. He can make your friends appear as hated enemies and your family appear as corpses.
He can eat you of course but he can also lure you into constructing your own finely woven trap.
His very presence, his very breath, can wrap a land in disorienting mists and hazes for months
He can imbue rivers and springs with a terrible madness, rendering them worse than poison.
And, despite being a creature of such incredible power, just like his master, he can hold a grudge that is so terribly, cruelly human. He can remember your face, your voice, your mind, among tens of thousands of victims.
That's because this is Silmarillion
Uh, while my inbox overflows, I'm going to continue posting little fictional guys, ok? Ok.
Gondor Week day 3: Rangers of Ithilien, nature.
I think Legolas' restoration of Ithilien would heal parts of Faramir that he hadn't realized had been hurt. During the war he was so deep in protecting Gondor's borders that he had no time to mourn the degradation of the land, and he never realized how deep a wound it was until he started seeing it come back to life.
Also I thiiiink this is the first time I've drawn these two on their own together? They'd be friends. Like Legolas and Boromir are comrades and provoke the shit out of each other for fun, but Faramir connects with Legolas on a more personal level, and given the rebuilding/resettling of Ithilien by both Gondorians and Silvans, they'd develop one of the only friendships in this messy group that isn't founded on shared trauma.

Maglor's Gap Pt. 2
Interviewer: I see many gaps in your resume, Mr. Fëanorion.
Maglor: What about them?
Interviewer: I would love you to elaborate on what you were doing during those?
Maglor: Family business.
Interviewer: Furthermore, what about those unaccounted for years after your musical breakthrough, the Nolbolandy?
Maglor: Noldolantë.
Interviewer: Very well. But what were you doing after your tour?
Maglor: Family business.
Interviewer: And what is your motivation to join us here at Jewel-Secure-Trans?
Maglor: FAMILY BUSINESS!
still living with my parents as an adult is just like. i'm grateful to not have to pay for groceries. i have to get out of here. i'm grateful to have a roof over my head and not have to pay rent. i have to get out of here. i'm grateful to not have to worry about sending out endless job applications that all lead to nowhere. i have to get out of here. i'm grateful i'm grateful i'm so fucking grateful. i have to get out of here
Ik this has nothing to do with my usual Silm content and is not the situation for a lot of people but. Just had to say it: if the only thing preventing you from living with your parents is social stigma, I get how much that sucks, but also thatâs 100% because greedy landlords make more money out of squeezing every last drop out of stressed young people. A family that genuinely acts like a family is going to have your back and want to have you around, and theyâre ALWAYS going to be more important than jobs/landlords/etc that just want to eat all your time and money.
Sorry ik thatâs preachy, but I hear this from ALOT of my friends and I genuinely am so done with this part of western culture particularly. I lived with my parents for a comfortable margin of young adulthood, and was lucky enough to have a family who was thrilled to have me around. Every time I felt guilt about it I reminded myself that that was the late stage capitalism winning and it magically went away.
Notes from The Fall of Gondolin, feat. my growing frustration with Turgon đ
Also why did no one tell me this was actually peak Tolkien. This was so epic holy fuck. We had the best written and most brutal siege Iâve ever read. We had espionage. We had a codependent power trio. We had MOLES. Also NOBODY talks about Rog enough, what a legend
Maglor was more an older brother than a younger brother
Objectively, this is true. However, I think given the popularity of Maedhros and Maglor's dynamic, Maglor is usually cast more as the younger brother anyways.
This isn't just about the literal age order, though.
When Maedhros is taken to Angband, Maglor does not come for him alone, nor does he bring anyone. Given the hierarchy of the House of Finwë, it's widely agreed upon that Maglor would have been in charge following the deaths of their grandfather then father then absence of his elder brother. There is no indicator that they even try to do anything.
Maglor seems to have very little opinions about the Kinslaying and the Burning of the Ships, but when they, particularly Caranthir, are betrayed by Uldor, the previously assumed apathetic Maglor is the one who hunts him down and personally kills him.
When Doriath falls, Maedhros goes to look for the twin sons of Dior. Maglor does not do this, and it is worth noting that three of their brothers (half of them) are dead. I don't think we ever find out his thoughts on the twins either.
However, after their twin brothers died who also happen to be the last of Maglor's younger brothers, Maglor suddenly gave up on the hunt for the Silmarils. He muses about morality and how it's good that the Silmaril is far away. Most importantly, this time Maglor is the one to take in a pair of twins, all of a sudden concerned with the welfare of children abandoned in the wake of a Kinslaying.
It is not that Maglor does not love or feel loyalty to Maedhros. In the end, he chooses Maedhros over the twins. I just think it's a bit underappreciated that Maglor is more of an older brother than a younger brother and we can see how their circumstances influence his choices.
do you consider Crispy Amrod to be canon?
It honestly changes! Generally no, I tend to like the story more if Feanor and his sons genuinely really loved each other (although I do think the Oath really twisted that love up for the brothers later on) and I think especially Maedhros, Maglor, and Amras would have followed Feanor/the Oath a LOT less blindly if Amrod had been directly killed by their father like that so early on.
BUT I love the memes and will probably write some fanfics with that version of canon at some point, so. Either way XD
Thanks for the ask! <3
Something I feel like is very underrated about Tolkienâs writing is the way he always writes his aristocracy as having jobs.
Like most fantasy stories I read/see have a privileged ruling class whose day job is to either do politics or be idly wealthy. And then you have LOTR and the Silmarillion, where the kings and princes and queens are constantly identified by very traditionally lower-class job. FĂ«anor and Celebrimborâs defining trait is their smith work. Elrond and Aragorn are constantly referred to as capital H Healers. Bards like Maglor or Daeron or LuthĂen seemed to be a point of pride for their families/cities.
Idk itâs just a really cool take, esp from a British author considering the historical British ânoble classâ is where most of these fantasy stories draw their worldbuilding from.

Part 1 of A White Fire Within
âWhat if,â said ManwĂ«, regarding Maedhros with star-bright eyes, blue as sapphires and piercing as blades, âyou were sent from these Halls for a purpose, son of FĂ«anĂĄro?â âI suppose, my lord,â Maedhros said slowly, âthat would depend upon the purpose.â Maedhros is sent back to Middle-earth, in the company of the Maia OlĂłrin.
