I think the reason a lot of leftists struggle with disability justice is that they haven't moved past the concept that discrimination isn't bad because it's objectively "wrong." yes, sexists are objectively wrong when they try to claim women are dumber than men. yes, antisemites are objectively wrong that jewish people are inherently greedy and run the state. yes, racists are wrong when they try to claim that white people are the superior race. and so on.

but then with disabled people, there are a lot of objective truths to the discrimination we face. people with IDs/LDs do fall behind and struggle with certain concepts. physically disabled people are often weaker and less capable of performing demanding tasks than able bodied people. many of us with mental illnesses are more reckless and less responsible. a lot of us are dependent on others and do not contribute much "worth".

and guess what? disabled people still deserve a place in the world. disabled people still deserve the supports they need. because they are people, and that should be enough to support them and believe they deserve a place at the table.

if your only rebuttal against discrimination is its objective inaccuracies, you are meeting bigots where they are at. you are validating the very concept that if and when people are truly incapable of being equal to the majority, that means they are worth less. this causes some leftists to then try to deny the objective realities of disabled people and/or become ableist themselves.

your rallying behind marginalized groups should start and end with the fact that people are completely worthy of life and equity, because they are fellow human beings and that should, frankly, be enough.

so i did my undergrad thesis on disability eugenics. so when i talk about eugenics here i mean in the context of disability. it's been a few years (+ some random on tumblr isn't a real source) but i distinctly remember that my research into disability eugenics centered in europe + the global west/imperial core was that like. people have this perception that we had a very bad turn during the nazi reign of germany and that came out of nowhere and then it was fixed when we ("we") won. some people know that the nazi eugenics project was inspired by the united states of america which has a long and unbroken history of eugenics against multiple groups of people (to this day). few people might also know that disability eugenics continued in europe unbroken after the second world war, and outright sterilisation or certain upsetting "treatments" carried on for decades. i remember finding evidence up till the 1970s and back from the 1990s (not that the 80s had nothing, that's just the sources i had) like. disability eugenics is not and never was a thing of the past. it is ongoing, it is constant, it is not a "one off". i read stories of people killing their disabled children, getting them sterilised without their understanding or consent. of people going into places like care homes for disabled people and mass killing. in environmental disasters or disturbances how it's disabled people who are left behind to die first. multiple papers and academics straight up saying disabled humans are not people. even straight to my face. and after i finished that degree and left i saw how they completely fucked disabled people over during covid. how they're implementing assisted death for disabled people instead of giving them any quality of life. how decades of austerity politics targeted disabled people first and foremost and continue to do so. it's not that disabled people will die if more restrictions on our support passess the bar of whatever country you live in (which, they will). it's that we've been dying by the thousand over the past 20 years from austerity and poverty anyway. don't think for a single moment that disability eugenics ever went away. it's never too late to give a fuck about disabled people but we've been here this whole time, experiencing this shit over and over, and protecting each other because very few people want to protect us

you know, I love it, who cares about the timelines (michael hirst sure doesn't). random thoughts about the end of hotd s2

i genuinely think the reason the writers had alicent run off at the end of s2 -unlike the book- is because they didn't know how to write the conflict between rhaenyra and alicent (after the deaths of lucerys & jahaerys) 🤨 they sacrificed both their characters in their last interaction at the end of s2. they erased rhaenyra's grief and anger over lucerys (& visenya) and her stolen inheritance, which makes her look politically inept by letting alicent, helaena, and jahaera get away. they also erased alicent's grief for jaeharys and her fear for and devotion to her sons lives, and by sending her away they remove her influence in the dance

they had an opportunity to have rhaenyra being ruthless -externalising all her pain and ego- and politically savvy -leveraging her hostages and actually influencing the war in her name- & to have alicent being savvy herself -manipulating rhaenyra under the guise of advice and stirring conflict amongst the blacks- whilst she waits for aemond to return

they could've showed their relationship in all is contradictive and desperate and destructive glory. how "love is the death on duty" rhaenyra and "duty is the death of love" alicent will never be able to go back to their girlhood because they've scorched the earth of the past, and how one can never have a future whilst the other is free

and they clearly didn't want to have rhaenyra look bad by holding alicent, helaena and jahaera as hostages, or have alicent seem anything other than submissive but that's another rant entirely

back on this, but they really did throw away any relationship alicent and rhaenyra had outside of each other AND their driving ambitions -alicent defending her children and rhaenyra defending her fathers succession (don't even get me started on how this women-led show only gave its "girlboss" leads ambition and agency relative to men 🤢)

seriously, would rhaenyra really forfeit the chance to lure Aemond (lucerys' killer) into a trap? did she really not think that alicent crowned aegon because she wanted to -she even accused her of hiding her ambitions and resentment behind duty? how do jacaerys and the twins, who lost their brother, feel about rhaenyra betraying their grief? how does her council feel about her betraying their cause? and would alicent really abandon her son's for the chance of a peaceful life, despite knowing since their birth that peace was off the table? would she really give them up for execution -she even attacked rhaenyra for aemond's injury? how does helaena feel about alicent betraying her brothers? how do her sons feel about being abandoned by the person who taught them war was fixed?
