Harry pretends to look half-embarrassed, but the faint curl of his mouth gives him away. Louis sighs, already reaching for his supplies. He’d be concerned if he didn’t know how fast wolves healed or how much Harry seemed to enjoy testing that fact. At this point, Louis is starting to think the alpha’s wounds aren’t accidents at all.

Or: Louis is the pack’s healer bound by duty, with no time for romance. Harry is the pack’s alpha who seems determined to change that by any means necessary.

The doorbell rings and Harry’s heart leaps in his throat. It’s not like he wasn’t waiting for exactly this to happen - like he hadn’t been suffering from the paralysis that came with waiting for a future event, no matter how far back it was in the day - but somehow, between watching the minute hand of the clock move towards the twelve and the hour hand finally settling firmly on the two, he’d still managed to be surprised.

He’s nervous, wiping his hands on his jeans as he walks on suddenly unsteady legs towards the door. Never invite strangers to your house, rings through his head in his nan’s voice, but the thing is, Harry doesn’t know what else to do.

Of course there’s other options. There should be other options, at least. But he’s tried them all. He’s tried going to the library to study, but somehow it’d been too quiet. He’d tried music, but that was too loud. He’d tried the pomodoro technique and he’d tried body doubling, but none of it had helped.

Hence, Louis.

“You should go home,” Louis muses, and Harry can feel the omega crouch down to become eye level with Harry, poking his cheek with a dainty finger. Harry lifts his arm, taking a peek at Louis’ face. Louis looks tired, he notes, but not exhausted, and there’s an eyelash stuck to his cheek. Harry doesn’t hesitate to lazily reach out and thumb over his cheek. “Can’t,” Harry croaks, blindly twisting his hand around to grab at Louis’ offending finger and just holding it. “C’mere. Take a nap with me,” he asks after a beat, opening an eye to look at Louis. Louis raises an eyebrow. “M’not going to nap with you in the middle of the ER, H.” Sighing, Harry squeezes the young nurse’s finger. “Nobody cares.” He knows they do; they’ll annoy nurses and probably worry patients when they catch sight of a nurse and surgeon sleeping on the job. Let alone in the middle of the emergency ward hallway. Harry can hear the complaints now: ‘these are the people we’re supposed to trust with our lives?’

“But I searched for all your weak spots,” Louis said as he watched Harry’s pupils go wide. “Did you search mine?”

Harry didn’t fight back as the grip on his wrists began to tighten. Instead, he smiled and gave him an unbothered look. He then slowly broke the hold with a twist of his wrists, just enough for Louis’ fingers to slip free. He dragged his muddy fingertips along the edge of Louis’ jaw, tracing it with precision, then down the lengths of his throat until his open palm came to rest at the center of Louis’ chest—his heart.

“I did,” he whispered, pressing his palm in harder. “It’s right here.”
