For the majority of us, having a home is something we take completely for granted. There are general statistics about homelessness and itinerancy but very little about women who have lost their homes. According to estimates from 2014, Germany-wide there were approximately 335,000 people who were without a permanent home. According to current estimates, this will rise to about 536,000 in 2018 - approximately 25% of these will be women.
There are numerous causes that could lead to itinerancy and homelessness. In many cases, it becomes a vicious circle in which many find extremely hard to break out of. The situation for many women appear to be hopeless, nevertheless there are resources and help available. One such resource is the Social-Therapeutic House for Women for those who find themselves in either a precarious social situation or who face an immediate or looming threat of losing their homes. For many women, moving into this facility is an important step towards a better life. Those left stranded; those seeking a break in order to find themselves again; those who need to put their lives in order so that they can finally deal with their past. This house provides an individual room and a sense of togetherness - highlighted by changes, its moving-outs, moving-ins and farewells. It is a housing situation for unusual living situations that is only temporary.
