‘Hercules’ by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844).
This Relief, a detail from a sculpture by Bertel Thorvaldsen depicting an allegory of “Strength” belongs to an 1872 marble group, where Hercules, a nude male figure, is seated on a lion skin and is holding a club. A woman is standing before him, and pouring from a pitcher, into a dish held by Hercules. The work in that is also reminiscent of the role Hebe, shared with Ganymedes, as cup bearer to the god Zeus.
