The sculpture called “Cato of Utica Reading the phaedo Before Killing Himself”. It was getting a bath at the Louvre, Paris. This is a white carrara marble sculpture started by Jean-Baptiste Roman. It was commissioned in 1832 for the Louvre. It would be completed by Francois Rude in 1840 after the death of his friend.

This sculpture depicts Cato The Younger who was a statesman of the Roman Republic at the point where he is about to take his own life while reading the Phaedo, a dialogue of Plato which details the death of Socrates.. An odd trip to Versailles NOT to visit the Palace but to see an exhibition in the building the Hôtel des Affairs étrangères et de la Marine (foreign affairs and the navy). It was built by Jean-Baptist Berthier at the time Louis XV was the king of France. (1762) Looking up as you enter it was impressive and then greeted by a portrait bust of Louis XV. It was in this building that the Treaty of Versailles was negotiated and signed in 1783. This would help put an end to the American War of Independence. . . .
