To Apple, Love Taylor

I write this to explain why I’ll be holding back my album, 1989, from the new streaming service, Apple Music. I feel this deserves an explanation because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans. I respect the company and the truly ingenious minds that have created a legacy based on innovation and pushing the right boundaries.

I’m sure you are aware that Apple Music will be offering a free 3 month trial to anyone who signs up for the service. I’m not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers, or artists for those three months. I find it to be shocking, disappointing, and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company. This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows. This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field…but will not get paid for a quarter of a year’s worth of plays on his or her songs.

These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child. These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect this particular call.

I realize that Apple is working towards a goal of paid streaming. I think that is beautiful progress. We know how astronomically successful Apple has been and we know that this incredible company has the money to pay artists, writers and producers for the 3 month trial period… even if it is free for the fans trying it out.

Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing. I say this with love, reverence, and admiration for everything else Apple has done. I hope that soon I can join them in the progression towards a streaming model that seems fair to those who create this music. I think this could be the platform that gets it right.

But I say to Apple with all due respect, it’s not too late to change this policy and change the minds of those in the music industry who will be deeply and gravely affected by this. We don’t ask you for free iPhones. Please don’t ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation.

New Direction – Role Shifts Off Stage?

Now, we’ve all been talking about how great it was to see the boys so relaxed on The Late Late Show, comfortable and chummy and generally at ease. And while part of it definitely was that James is their longtime friend, I think it also has a lot to do with how their roles have shifted to what we’ve seen in the past. Some thoughts:

Louis is the most obvious change for me; he was the one sat closest to James – the frontman position, so to speak. He was the most vocal, the one the conversation kept coming back to. And it fits. Louis is the one we’ve always pegged as the secret leader; he’s a natural entertainer personality, is eloquent and tells fun stories, has great comedic timing, and he’s really good at bantering with an interviewer (and the other three). He’s the one most likely to get a laugh from the audience. And he seems to enjoy having that spotlight on him. 

(Note: I’m not saying the others aren’t funny! But I believe the strength of the others lies more in bouncing off each other, in banter. On his own, Louis is the most entertaining.)

Niall was fairly quiet, but not in a way that felt forced: it felt like he was kicking back during a chat with friends, throwing in his two cents whenever it felt right. When it came to his part of “what have you been up to,” he didn’t even have to say very much since James showed the golf clip, and then everyone was teasing Niall. I’ve always see him as someone who’s perfectly content with not being the centre of attention, who loves to interact, but is happy if he doesn’t have the responsibility of running the show. So this seemed quite organic to me.

Harry was quiet as well, bar for his bread van story. (He used to be a baker; did you know? Heh.) When it came to what he’s been up to, the other boys pretty much covered for him, teasing him about his juice cleanse so he barely even had to reply. Again, it felt organic. He did contribute to the banter, but he didn’t lead the conversation. Part of it might have been that he was under the weather, but even so, I’ve rarely seen him this relaxed in an interview. I think most of us agree that he’s never been very comfortable having all the attention in an interview focused on him – he’s witty and charming in conversations, he likes to throw in little comments, but when he has to tell a story because he’s been specifically addressed, he often appears self-conscious and overly aware of every single word. (Unsurprising, given how often he’s been picked apart in the media.) The supporting role he had on James’ show? If given the choice, I could totally see him choose this. 

(Note 2: Harry and Niall were particularly quiet during the segment on Zayn – maybe because their poker faces are shit.)

Liam’s role actually hasn’t changed much. He’s the one who grounds the conversation, and he’s also the one who delivered the key statement about Zayn. This is consistent with past interviews, when it was typically Liam who took the hard questions, who more than once jumped in with the official narrative so the others wouldn’t have to do it. Remember the FOUR livestream? Liam is so important. 

The overall effect felt really organic to me. (I’ve been using that word a lot, sorry.) Picture Louis as the driver, Liam in the passenger seat giving directions, and Harry and Niall protected in the backseat, from where they can toss popcorn and sing along to the music. Even the seating arrangement seemed to reflect that, with Louis and Liam framing the other two. 

And it worked. Really well. 

(Another note: I don’t think we’ll see something similar on stage; during concerts, it’s always been Liam and Harry who are at the forefront, who engage most with the crowd, and who seem thrive on performing. I don’t think that’ll change much.)

Just so you know...

Hey guys,

I’m writing to you with an update I wish I wasn’t giving you, but it’s important and I’m used to sharing important events in my life with you. Usually when things happen to me, I process them and then write music about how I feel, and you hear it much later. This is something my family and I thought you should know about now.

For Christmas this year, I asked my mom that one of her gifts to me be her going to the doctor to get screened for any health issues, just to ease some worries of mine. She agreed, and went in to get checked. There were no red flags and she felt perfectly fine, but she did it just to get me and my brother off her case about it.

The results came in, and I’m saddened to tell you that my mom has been diagnosed with cancer. I’d like to keep the details of her condition and treatment plans private, but she wanted you to know.

She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle… Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.

Thank you for caring about my family so much that she would want me to share this information with you. I hope and pray that you never get news like this.
