Although others (see: Catland) have started their own archives, I would like to post Louis Wain’s art on Tumblr on a regular basis to bring just a small dose of joy and art appreciation to each day. My name is Coda, I’m 18, and I use they/them pronouns. There are no other mods for this blog. I have been a fan of Louis Wain for a few years now, and I consider him an artistic and personal inspiration of mine. <3
ABOUT LOUIS WAIN:
Louis Wain was a British artist in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He achieved massive fame for his illustrations of cats enjoying mundane and playful contemporary activities, and his works were widely published. Despite his fame, he had a poor sense for business, and made little profit off of his works. He was heavily involved in charity work regarding animals. Later in his life, his mental health took a turn for the worse, and he was institutionalized due to erratic and sometimes violent behavior towards his sisters, whom he lived with. A year later, his friends and fans raised money for him to be moved to one of the better asylums of his time, which had relatively good living conditions and a colony of cats. Wain was believed to suffer from schizophrenia, which some claim is the cause behind his later psychedelic works, though others dispute both the schizophrenia diagnosis and the idea that his mental instability drove his stylistic change. Wain kept drawing the subject he loved most until he died in 1939, following a disabling stroke three years prior.
