Inspiration: strong women trough cleanlines, simplicity, zen

STRONG WOMAN; MUSES IN ANCIENT GREEK

The shoot named “MUSE” was inspired by the greek muse Polyhymnia. The muses were considered the source of the knowledge embodied in the poetry, song-lyrics, and myths that were related orally for centuries in these ancient cultures. They were later adopted by the Romans as a part of their pantheon. In current English usage, "muse" can refer in general to a person who inspires an artist, writer, or musician.

Polyhymnia means "the one of many hymns", and she was in Greek mythology the Muse of sacred poetry, sacred hymn, dance, and eloquence as well as agriculture and pantomime. She is depicted as very serious, pensive and meditative. Dressed in a long cloak and veiland resting her elbow on a pillar. Polyhymnia is also sometimes credited as being the Muse of geometry and meditation.

I chose to get inspired my her because it goes in line with my big theme; strong and powerful women. As well as the clean simplicity and zen as she represents geometry and meditation.

Things that inspired my magazine, theme and writing:

The movie suffragette brought up to surface that we really had to fight for our way for right to vote. Reminded me we have to stop taking everything for granted. And researching into the subject there are still major differences between men and women. Men gets payed more, have less taboos and people are actually discussed by things like female periods, sex life etc. a man never gets called a slut (it even feels like a female word, not masculine heeellppp humankind!!). and this wanted me to portrait and highlight a different kind of woman. A very strong and independent woman. A diverse woman. To show diversity and that there is not just on ideal, right way or stereotype. I wanted to portrait and style a shoot where the woman was strong, sexually independent and carefree. And it was very important that the woman in particular would be dressed as a boy, a way the “cool, carefree and independent” often are portrayed, the “tomboy”. I wanted to show a cool, independent, strong and sensual girl that is in control of herself and her sexuality, and use codes from the 18th century suffragette movement such as lace blouses, dresses and pearls etc. And combine it with the typical coolness attires as jeans, t-shirts, loafers, hats and jackets. And of course use flowers. Flowers as a beautiful symbol for femininity and sex.

When I did the magazine I learned a lot from contacting and talking to other people. Even reading about them when I got into the theme. The Thelma and Louise article inspired me a whole deal, even if the article might not be that interesting. I looked into how woman are fighting from equality in Hollywood with salaries and powerful women figures in the cinema.

And then I started to look for more strong females that likes to take actions and things in their own hands, and found them is my old favourite movie Thelma and Louise and favourite books by Stieg Larsson.

Richard Mosse inspiration. What i think is so cool about his video is how they play with the colours. as well as the graphic (the digital age). and both together play with the illusion of how we live today. we have so much war going on everywhere, everything is digital and people wants to share their great everyday life as it’s real” but nothing really is. I feel that this video really is contemporary, and also chocking for the way they use gun weapon...

A beautifully calm and vast pink landscape carries an equally large history. Though it appears to be a land of fairy tales, it is, in fact, the tormented territory of the Congo.

Photographer Richard Mosse ventured to the eastern parts of the African country with a new artistic perspective on the jungle war zone in his series entitled Infra.

Mosse employed a discontinued military surveillance technology called Kodak Aerochrome, which is a type of film with infrared capabilities. Essentially, the film transforms the green that is typically found in countryside terrain to variations of red, crimson, lavender, and hot pink

the meaning of my work

I have always been a very happy person, kind of naive, thinking the world is a beautiful place and everyone is nice deep within. I have learned that isn’t true but I’m so enormously thankful to my parents for raising me in a way that gave me the hope for life. In class doing the Proust questions I needed to fins my favourite motto, and I’ve found it. ” here there is a will, there is a way. ”

I want to work for something to make life a little bit better, but choosing a career in fashion does not really give you a Nobel peace prize. But being happy doing something I’m endlessly passionate about and making me feel stimulated and gives good energy is at least one human-being more with a job and a good health. That’s why I think important too highlight subjects that’s important for me and also to push the boundaries of what’s normal and beautiful a little step at a time. Kind of reach another customer.

And I’m touching those subject the best way I can. I’m not a writer, I know it. It’s very hard for me to write things for school assignments. But what I have learned though the writing process is that I love the process that comes before. I love to read. Find interesting subjects. Do research. Collect things and images. Instead of predicting these things into words, I prefer making a picture of of it. And I think I might be a good image maker.

shit. Being Swedish it’s a very bad thing to say that you actually might be good at something. You always have to be very modest. it’s good and bad. But I think it makes you scared to take risks and believe in yourself so I’m trying to break free from that. Which is the good part of the era of ”ME” we are currently living in ( and I’m trying got write an interesting article about…) I feel it’s good for some people to have this tolerance in society about being a tad egoistic and stop caring too much about other people’s gossiping and opinions. but please, pray for this to just be a phase.

What I’ve comprehended fashion reflect the society; the zeitgeist. My question then is how you reflect it the best way? What is ok and what isn’t? What message do you want to deliver to the rest of the world? Cause that’s what you do though your clothes and clothes in photographs, videos etc. you give an impression beyond words.

Right now with current events like Cuba and post-Soviet Union, Syrian refugees and Balkan war - military wear are spreading. What message do we really deliver wearing that? What is the Balmain army? We can’t ignore that war is still going on in the world but we can choose how we as individuals wants to interpret our reality.

Was photographer Richard Mosse’s approach to document I really like. He does it with a twist that is playing with our mind, it’s almost humoristic how much colours matters and if we change it it gives a double message.

And I really enjoyed how prada interpreted this in their FW collection.

I ask myself in what ways I can do good as well as I’m doing something meaningful in a larger context? Whose opinions really decides how my work should be interpreted?

I want to move forward; push the buttons we need to push in society. I feel like at the moment everything looks the same, and I want to make something, just a teeny bit, different. Something beautiful for the eye and contributes to our minds. But at the moment we are doing so much at once, the news flow which makes your phone buzz every second with new information, doing several different subjects in school and also have time to please the people I work with as well as doing my own projects.

I want to portrait strong woman. And to push the image we have of women of today. We are liberated but still live in our own boxes and refuse to go out of line.

What I’m learning most though my studies is not the fact, or taste or new designers. It’s how to analyse not only fashion and my surrounding but also myself.

Now is a good time to be young and start something new, because the system is clearly changing. And what we have to do is to change it into a better way.

My view and beginning of my passion

I come to constantly question myself ”why?”. why do I like this, why do I don’t like this? what do i want to create, what message do I want to send? Though this questing about what message I want to send is something I constantly come into a debate with a friend of mine who respond to my critical analysis -" if you like it, you like it! why care about what anybody else are saying or thinking?" But it’s not about I want people’s affection with my choices. It’s that I want to be original, and the only way to be that is to be 100% me, because no one else has the same references or thought as I do. And in the age we are living in now we constantly get exposed to new things. We see fashion bloggers, influencers and celebrities on the media 24/7 looking stunning. But what they are showing is not real, they are living advertisers. It's governed by greed and not by vision. And at first glance everything looks beautiful. So if I wouldn’t analyse what I really like and what’s really “me” I would just end up a victim (or perfect consumer) to what media is selling. Have the same it-bag of the season like everybody else. And that is not real style for me. And if I’m not critical I will end up in that trap.

And this question also takes me to another question, what is beauty? I think why I wanted to work with fashion since I can remember since being 6 years old filling the questions in my classmates” my friends” books. 6-year-old Louisa wanted to be either a dolphin trainer or fashion designer when she grew up. I think I had since then a fascination of beauty. And what I think is fascinating is what is beautiful?

My brother asked me when I was 4,” louisa, would you like own a pink sparking piece of poo?” and I said YES! And at 11 my dentist said I shouldn’t smile with the teeth outside of my lips like a rabbit ( my favourite far to make-hideous i see now in pictures) because if I continued I would have to get braces. oh. my. god. BRACES?! That was the coolest most beautiful thing I knew, all the older cool girls had it, why would I not want one? I regretted it of course when I had if from 14-16th year old…

Anyway, I think it fascination what we consider beautiful. And how it actually changes during time. And one of the worst word I know is ugly. that’s quite strange if I want to work with fashion and image making. It’s not like I don’t care, I care a lot - BUT I respect and admire that every person is different and unique. Beauty is not one significant thing. I think a person is the most beautiful living life, really enjoying it and making the most of it. When they give something else to the world, loving life.

When I decided at 5 years old I wanted to be a fashion designer I think I was just so possessed with the beautiful and magical pictures I saw in my mother’s magazine, or how magical it felt being in a designer boutique with her. It was treasured moments. I liked that magical world and I only knew fashion designer was a profession you could have. What I later came to realise is that like to create images. And fashion is a big part of that. But not the only part. And I’ve slowly moved into photography. I know i could not be a fashion designer, because I liked diversity too much. I wanted to do more! So I found the education fashion styling- including courses like fashion and art history, photography and style analysis. Diverse and perfect for me. And now photography is what interest me the most- I can work with what I like the most with fashion and create different images. And create a person, and a life though the picture.
