Qui sta il rapporto fra bellezza e verità.La bellezza non è l’opposto del “brutto” ma del “falso”.Un esempio calzante della nostra incapacità di comprendere la bellezza è costituito dalla tendenza generale della gente che cita il ”tramonto” come un fatto bello,quasi che la pioggia o la nebbia non lo fossero altrettanto,anche se talvolta sono meno gradevoli per il fisico.Per la grande maggioranza la cultura è un altro articolo di consumo e un simbolo di status,nella misura in cui l’aver visto i ”giusti”quadri,il conoscere la ”giusta” musica e l’aver letto i ”buoni” libri denota un certo tipo di istruzione e quindi è utile per progredire nella scala sociale.L’aspetto migliore dell’arte è stato così trasformato in un articolo di consumo.
