This is the last of my assignments, the encouragement banner. I picked the message “Find good vibes” because boredom and negativity just makes everything worse, and as long as I can find ways to keep myself happy and stimulated I can survive the rest of quarantine.

I put a lot of thought for the 25 feelings I needed to put in my emotion flow chart. The bottom emotions are the negative ones, and the closer to the top emotions are more positive. The positive emotions I like to think as how I normally am, while the bottom ones are either based on my flaws or I have experienced recently but kept under the surface. I’m not so bored anymore from quarantine, but a lot of the negative ones I’ve for whatever reason experienced with my parents (they didn’t do anything wrong, I just have a tendency to get upset when they care a little too much and both of us are working on it).

This week, I decided to end my life color posts with a look at orange. As a kid, orange was probably my second favorite color. Just like with red, orange is a naturally bright color, but I also find it has much more intensity. Dull oranges are even rarer to find unless you see a moldy orange fruit somewhere. I’ll admit, these last few weeks I didn’t really have much to say, but I’m just glad I could find SOMETHING to grasp at straws with. But I still feel bad I can’t think of much else to say. Oh well.

Last week, I looked at the color red. I noticed that red was a common color I could find in some of my favorite characters, like Wakko Warner and Sylvester the cat. It also happened to be the color of my favorite Teenie Beanie 2.0: Radish the dog (coincidentally the mascot of the Beanie Babies 2.0 was Snootz, a red dog, and one that I consider one of my favorite mascots of all time). It turns out I find red an attractive color because of its natural brightness. I don’t see dull or dark reds too often nowadays, so the reds tend to keep my eyes’ focus.

Last week, I continued my one color focus and did pink because it’s my favorite color and I wanted to revisit it since I did it for one of if not my first life color posts. From neon to pastel, pink is such a beautiful color. And I love seeing it’s variety! Quarantine life may be monotonous, but at least colors are anything but.

Last week I wanted to look at the color purple. I dyed my Rapunzel’s hair brown and cut it short as a fun personal project, so after looking at her dress I decided I would focus my quarantined life color posts on one specific color. Looking at all three of these pictures, I notice how purple can look like a completely different color the brighter or duller it is. Isn’t it amazing?

The clouds looked nice today, and I never really take the time to notice the flowers in my garden, so I found them interesting enough to do for my nature colors assignment. This is my first time doing abstract art of nature, so I hope I did it well.

The found object sculpture’s final version! If I had to give it a title, I would name it “A New Purpose”. The reason being I chose the objects I did was because I found little to no purpose for them (aside from the Valentine’s Day mold being a potential paperweight). This is why some didn’t make the final cut like the gluestick, the Brazt hair brush, and the clown nose. All in all, I’m really happy with what I came up with! It was as if all my creative juices flowed seamlessly into motion.

Color Theory Studio Project

This piece is in conversation with Ellsworth Kelly’s Colors for a Large Wall:

I chose this piece because of its abstract nature. It always looked like a chaotic, mismatched checker board, so I experimented with the color placement. I drew what appears to be a regular checker board with the pieces in the corner, but the squares are in a completely different pattern, almost like a rainbow. The only two colors I repeated where cerulean and lime green because their prominence was very little in the piece and there were not much other colors I could choose from. Overall, I wanted to turn the piece into something that made sense to me. Something that becomes a little clearer to the human eye even if it isn’t exactly right.

3D Sculpture Studio Project

This is a sculpture of the Coronavirus. I made it in conversation with Lu Yang’s Cancer Baby:

I chose this because I thought it was interesting to see a cancer cell being portrayed as something cute. It is a statement on how the body doesn’t realize the cancer cells are dangerous until it’s too late and the cancer cells start attacking the body. The coronavirus is very much the same thing since it is an unrecognized sickness. The colors I chose were green and black because they perfectly capture the essence of a two-faced disease. Green is a healing color so it looks friendly, but black is of course a representation of darkness and evil, which is when the virus shows off its true nature.

This wa really fun to make and experiment with! The sphere used is made of styrofoam, the eyes and mouths are cut and drawn from paper, and the sticks are actually golf tees.

For black color focus, I picked Kara Walker’s “Slavery! Slavery!” and Bridget Riley’s “Crest”.

Starting with “Slavery! Slavery!”, the generally accepted significance of the piece is that it shows the horrors behind racism and slavery through tragic yet also comedic violence despite a simple shadow puppet-like style. What makes it art is that it grabs our attention enough to make us think and reflect in a depiction of something very real (even if that happened many years ago). Walker chose to use black because by using purely black and white, it emphasizes the race struggles between the black people and the white people. This piece teaches us that black is a prime example of a good color to convey bleakness and tragedy.

As for “Crest”, this is art because it’s an interesting case; it’s an optical illusion, playing tricks on the human eye. This is synonymous with the generally accepted significance of the piece: that it can create movement. Riley’s reason for using black in the drawing is to simulate abstractness and movement clearer. What this piece teaches us about black is how it can simulate it so well.

The role of the artist is to create something that expresses who they are and share it with the world. The best art comes from an artist making work they would enjoy, and hoping someone out there will enjoy it too. It’s the best form of expression.

Commercialism and the media have had a strange effect on my work. My original cartoon concept can be seen as “just another fantasy cartoon”, but seeing so many of them with similar styles pushes me to not just imitate them in fanart, but also develop my own style. That way, by making it LOOK unique, people won’t assume it’s completely lazy (which is the stigma people have when they erroneously think the Cal Arts Style is a real thing and call out all modern animation for being unoriginal, bland, and lazy).

For grey’s color focus, I picked “Bombers” by Gerard Richter.

This is an interesting case because as I digged deeper, the artist only uses grey in all his works. He does this because he wants to dull the vivid experiences of the topics he paints. This teaches us that grey can alter a memory. Those who lived through and still remember World War II will see this painting and feel subdued compared to the terror they felt when they saw the bomber planes in real life. That too is the overall significance of the piece: to separate the feeling and turn the experience into something passive.

For white color focus, the two pieces I picked were “Symphony in White No 1: The White Girl” by James Abott McNeil Whistler and “Villa Savoye” by Le Corbusier.

Starting with “The White Girl”, Whistler made this work with a passion. It is considered art as it utilizes the medium of paint and reimagines a person: his mistress, Joanna Hifferman. The accepted importance of the work was that it should have been Whistler’s first piece at the Academy, but it was ultimately rejected. Despite this disappointment, he was still proud of his work. The importance of using the color white was to show off Hifferman’s innocence and purity, only for the viewers to discover Hifferman was not quite innocent nor pure. This is the reason Whistler used white; to contrast Hifferman’s outfit with her true nature.

Moving onto “Villa Savoye”, the importance of this piece was that it revolutionized the simple French house and turned it into a technologically advanced home. This is art due to the remodeling; it takes something old and turns it into a completely new revamped version. Corbusier used white for the outer look because it captures the essence of what the future looks like. Most if not all futuristic-looking houses utilize white, which makes sense for Corbusier to do the same. This teaches us that white can symbolize more than just innocence and purity: it also symbolizes change.

Each of these pieces were picked for their bold statements. Cancer Baby showed know something so deadly could be registered as just a normal, “cute” part of the body before infecting it, Electromagnetic Brainology shows an imaginary religion where people become godlike, Material World Knight shows how much society values the tangible compared to what truly matters most like love and friendship, and Delusional Crime and Punishment creates a personal Hell from pain and science.

Looking at these images in black and white makes me realize that with the colors sucked out, the message has a lesser impact. What makes Lu Yang’s art shine is how colorful she makes them. For Cancer Baby in particular, it makes the piece look cuter and deceiving. And for cases like Delusional Crime and Punishment it’s harder to see what a personal Hell looks like without the colors to bring it to life. It really says a lot how integral color is for Lu Yang’s work, and this isn’t even an assignment for my color theory class! Haha.
