A blush crept over Sam’s cheeks. He wasn’t quite sure his skin could reach a deeper level of red but the vast amount of heat radiating off of his face told him it was possible. “Can’t say it’d hurt to avoid public humiliation and get a cute girl’s number in the process.” he flashed that Wilson grin. Maybe today was not so terrible afterall…

He looked at the button for med lab and then met Darcy’s eyes again. His shoulders shrugged. “Looks like my day just got better.” he laughed lightly. “Lead the way, Ms.Lewis.”

There was a moment of silence on his side of the conversation. His brain was racing on how the day had come to this. When he’d woken up this morning, it was just a normal day, that had been the plan. No pond, no leeches, no suprise cuties…just a normal day of flying and fighting and training and maybe grabbing a beer…he couldn’t honestly say he minded the turn of events. Suddenly, he remembered something else from the conversation.

“Hold up…what color are we talkin?” the thought of anything but Stark black was enough to make him laugh but he was curious to know just what the strange, interesting girl in front of him had in mind.

Darcy grinned triumphantly when he said she was cute, taking in his appearance all over again. “You know, keep up with tthe compliments, you’ll be my favorite Avenger soon.” She warned, winking at him with a little laugh.  “Of course it did. Everyone’s day gets better with a little bit of Darcy Lewis in their life.” She chuckled. It wasn’t a cocky statement, more than just a little joke as she bounced out of the elevator when it got to a stop. She took his hand then, fingers lacing through his. She was a very physical person, so despite him being a virtual stranger, she had no qualms about grabbing hold of him. 

Her happy grin turned into a sly one when the conversation rounded back to her prank on Stark. “Well, he has some dark hair, but back in my high school days, I was a bit of a scene kid, so I’ve got some extra strength turquoise dye. I was gonna do red, but he’d flaunt it because Iron Man.” She laughed, looking over her shoulder at him, eyes bright with wickedness.  “If you want I can hack into his computer and put Justin Bieber on loop.” She said, leading him to her place. “Double vengeance.”

He spent a moment while she was speaking to debate whether he could get more humiliated. He decided he couldn’t. <i>Here goes nothing</i> He stopped suddenly pulling her towards him. “I can be your hero babay.” he belted out for all of the hallway to hear. “I can kiss away the pain.” he whispered holding her face in his free hand, their faces inches apart.

“I will stand by you forever!” his voice thundered once more as he pushed away from her and hit his knees (completely forgetting about the black beasts still attached to him).

He looked up at her eyes wide and full of passion. “You.” he became with a smooth voice once more taking her hand. “can…” he pulled himself up to her level once more. “take my…” each word became softer as their faces got closer once more. “breath away.” it was barely a whisper and they had returned to the same position as if nothing had happened.

He had gotten carried away. Sam ALWAYS got carried away. But he loved to sing and he had already been mortified in this girl’s eyes. Plus it was the first thing that came to mind and the only way to get a song out of your head was the sing it, everybody knew that. Also, she had grabbed his hand, that opened the door to physical contact so really it was her fault. That’s how he explained it to himself as he stood there staring at her waiting for her reaction.

As soon as he started singing, Darcy was sure she was either in lust or love with the man in front of her. Her face was lit up in a grin, and as he dropped to his knees, her hands went to his shoulders and slid forward to cup the back of his neck. This was insane. She was being serenaded by a fucking superhero. A superhero covered in leeches.

As he came back up to be eye level with her, her chest was pressed against his and her chin was tilted up so she could actually make eye contact. It was one of those moments she cursed her height. “I know most ladies would find that crazy and weird, but I totally want to kiss your face right now.” Literally, she had just met him moments ago, but he was hot and weird and Darcy Lewis always had a weakness for weird.

She leaned up then, her nose bumping his until they were so close. And then she plucked off another leech. Bouncing off with the pest in hand, she gave him a wry grin. “You coming?”

Sam stood there in awe for a moment. Had he just gone from detrimental embarrassment to kissable to pretending nothing just happened. He was so confused. What he had just done would make most girls run for the hills or at the very least call him weird. But she hadn’t done either of those things. She was about to kiss him for a moment and now she was acting like nothing had happened...

Who was this girl?

He came back to his senses, nodded and followed. “How did you say you know the Avengers again?” he cleared his throat. He was trying to both make small talk and scout out some information on who exactly to ask about this strange creature in front of him.

 “Fine.” Pietro said stubbornly. 

He wasn’t about to let Sam show him up. It couldn’t be that hard to pilot one of these things. Clint did it. Sam did it. He’d seen Romanoff do it. He could certainly do it. 

So he flung himself into the control panel and sat back in his chair, flipping the controls he remembered Clint using the last time they’d been on a quinjet together. He heard the engine power on. Heard the machine making the noises it was supposed to make … 

And it sat there. Nothing happened. 

His cheeks colored a little bit. He wasn’t about to admit he was stuck. “I think it’s broken.” He lied. “Or did you mess with it?”

Sam raised a skeptical eyebrow. “What’s wrong speedy? Having trouble getting it up?” He was trying so hard not to laugh. He made a mental note to tell Clint later about that line. He felt that was grade A Barton material he’d just used.

“It’s okay ya know. This happens to a lot of guys the first time. Maybe you’re just a little overexcited. Do you want me to help?” Externally, he was cool as a cucumber (for maybe the first time in his entire life) ; internally he was losing his shit.

It took Sam a moment to get over the surprise. He hadn’t expected the man to take off his mask. He had known several men who would never have done that. It was now clear to him that the man in front of him was far more complex than he’d originally thought.

He stared into his eyes and never once cringed away. It made no difference to him what he looked like. He saw past that. His father had taught him that a long time ago. What mattered is who you choose to be not what has led you to that decision.

Then something else happened. Sam was caught off guard for a second time by the stranger in front of him. He didn’t want the money? Wasn’t that what this had all been about in the first place? No. Of course that’s not what this had been about. Then he did something that surprised him almost as much. Sam smiled at Wade Wilson.

He got it now. Everything Steve had told him about Bucky. Everything Rhodey had told him about Tony. It all made sense. Being in the military and living his life under his father’s moral compass had taught him that there is a right and a wrong. But they hadn’t taught him that sometimes good people do the wrong thing for good reasons. In that moment, Sam Wilson grew up and realized that the world wasn’t just good guys and bad guys.

“Sam Wilson.” he held out his hand. He wasn’t forgiving Wade. He had no interest in doing that. But he did decide that he was worth saving. That was something Sam “The Falcon” Wilson was quite good at.

Wade eyed the offered hand warily. “You don’t have one of those shock things do you? I hate those practical jokes.” He said, still staring at the outstretched hand. But, he took it anwyas. “Wilson. Nice last name. I’m Wilson. Wade Wilson.” His head tilted a little as he looked at him, not sure what happened witht he change in the person in front of him. 

“I don’t know what you’re getting at, but I’m not turning myself in or whatever you’re gonna try to convince me to do. If you’re gonna do the good guy riot act that I get from Captain America literally every month, I’m gonna step out. Sorry but I got a kid I gotta get ice cream for.” He said, not breathing at all as he pandered on. 

This was definitely an odd night. Even for Wade. he’d not expected to even see this guy today. He’d just wanted to do his job and be done with it, but nope. Here he was, Phantom of the Opera-ing. Waxing poetic about monsters and what they get and he was suddenly being all Christine-ey with his ‘pitiful creature of darkness, what kind of life have you known’ eyes.

Sam laughed at the commonality in last name. “My dad would call that fate.” he smiled lightly releasing Wade’s hand. “Who knows maybe we’re even distantly related.” he shrugged trying to lighten the mood. “Though.” he paused for a moment now thoroughly inspecting Wade’s face for the first time.

“Judging by your crazy shit, it’s gotta be REAL distant cause you definitely a white guy.” he laughed. “And don’t worry. I learned a long time ago that people don’t respond well to you criticizing their entire way of life... go figure.” he shrugged again. “Cap’s got the old man thing working against him on that front. Back in the 50′s all they did was criticize every life choice. Doesn’t help that he’s the biggest Gryffindor ever to grace the face of the planet.” Now he was ranting. Did he just bring up Harry Potter houses with this stranger who had just murdered one of his oldest friends?

He tried not to think about it too hard. If he had, he’d realize that his life was an incredibly strange series of events nowadays.

“How old if your kid?” he didn’t really expect an answer. Wade didn’t particular come off as the show me yours, I’ll show you mind kinda guy. He was definitely more of that show me yours and I’ll blow your fucking face off kinda guy...Still, Sam couldn’t help himself. He walked back to the dresser he had pulled the bible out of. There was a broken photo frame laying on the ground in front of it.

“These are mine.” he smiled proudly handing him the picture. The image was with the most hideous car ever to exist. It was covered in a haphazard array of painted colors and drawings. Sam was seated in front of the car making a goofy face and there were about fifteen boys and girls of varying ages surrounding him. “Obviously not by birth.” he laughed pointing to a pasty white child. “But they might as well be.” he smiled fondly down at the picture.

“Well, that’s a damn shame!” Sam furrowed his brow as he aggressively clicked his home button on his phone. ‘7:00PM’ is what the screen said. “Good, it’s still early.” he grinned.

“Hurry up and finish that beer, I got an idea.” he downed his drink and threw cash down on the bar top. “Also, you’re definitely making me an apple pie.” he beamed as he jumped up.

Rogue looked at him oddly when he said he had an idea, her eyes narrowed slightly. “Alriiiiight.” She said slowly. She quickly downed her beer, something some people would call ‘impressive’, but what she would just say was part of her Southern charm. 

As she slid the bottle away, she paid for her portion of her drinks as she turned to him, pushing her white streaks away from her face. “Alright. What’s your big plan?” She asked

She was a little nervous, naturally, but she trusted him enough. Besides, she had no doubt that if she didn’t want to do soemthing, she could handle it herself.

“It’s a surprise.” Sam grinned as he almost grabbed her hand. Luckily, for once, he realized what he was doing just in time. “Sike,” he stuck out his tongue yanking his open palm away as if he had meant to do it all along. He was a physical person. This was going to be a difficult friendship for him. But it was better to avoid contact than make his new friend uncomfortable.

“Mi lady.” he beamed opening what was left of the bar door for her. He was a gentleman first and foremost. There was a place he had in mind a few blocks down. It was way livelier than the bar they had just left. It was actually kind of a lot to handle most of the time but it was fun and the guys were nice. He figured she’d like it a lot. “You’ve never been to Freddie’s have you?” he smiled hopefully.

“I don’t know man! Maybe cause I’m one of the few members on this team you could actually kill if you wanted to?!” He had started out yelling but it was damn near impossible to yell at someone who was laughing at you, especially if that someone was Clint Barton and you were Sam Wilson. His fire burnt out by the last word.

“I guess.” he sighed as he sat up. “I was scared of what you’d think. I didn’t want you to think I was THAT guy.” he said quietly not making eye contact. “I care about Kate.” That was not what he’d meant to say. That sounded wrong coming out. “Not like that, like you care.” Go damn it Wilson get it together! “Damn it. You know what I mean! I care about her like I care about you.” he sighed. “And NO that does not mean I want to fuck you.” he laughed.

As his rambling went out he realized just how ridiculous this whole conversation was. “I just didn’t want you to think I meant for that to happen. It was definitely not planned. It  just kinda happened. She’s made it quite clear it meant nothing.” he shrugged lightly.

Ok, now he was offended. “Hey! The only ones on the team I couldn’t kill are Thor and The Hulk, the rest of you I could take as long as it wasn’t close combat!” That sounded much better in the confines of his own brain, or would have sounded much more sane if it were Nat he was talking to.

“I never thought you were that guy, though FYI, avoiding me did not encourage that belief.” Clint’s laughter increased with each line that came out of Sam’s mouth until the one that made his face go calm and one eyebrow kick up. “Yeah? You sure about that? ‘Cause you’re still on top’a me.” He wiggled to prove his point.

“She told me about it a couple days after. I handled it badly, though not because of the reasons you thought. Nothin’ to do with you, actually.”

Sam shrugged like it was nothing, but Clint wasn’t so sure. “Are you ok?”

Sam’s laughter ceased immediately as he raised an eyebrow. ““That’s not very impressive. You know that right?” he smiled at the ‘close combat’ comment. “Dude!” Sam made a sound that could only be described as ‘ugh’ as he pushed off of Clint and stood up. “I am 1000% not tryin ta hit that.” His face was very stern for a mere moment and then broke into a grin. The thought of he and Clint sleeping together was ridiculous. They were both attractive in their own right and both had tendencies towards men but they were friend zoners for life. That was just a cold hard fact.

His grin softened into his resting face (a smile). “I’m glad I didn’t further damage your relationship or cause another hawkeye squared battle.” he smirked lightly and then registered Clint’s last question. He hadn’t really thought about it.

“Yeah man.” he made a face as if to say ‘duh.’ “I mean it’s not like I’ve never had a one night stand before.” he rolled his eyes. He hadn’t. “I’m a grown man. I use women all the time just to relieve stress.” He didn’t. “No biggie.” He shrugged. It was.

Sam tried to imagine himself at twelve. He remembered the little boy who was obsessed with superheroes. He remembered all of the stories about the X-Men and mutants. He had devoured them. He had been obsessed. He’d dressed up as Wolverine from ages eight to thirteen. How would his feelings have changed if he had discovered he DID have super powers? Wishing for them was one thing but having all of that uncontrollable power at that age…

It was then that he imagined the damage he could have done had he had powers that fateful night. Would his father be alive? Would he have really killed that man at sixteen? His answer to both of those questions made him sick to his stomach. It was ‘yes’; positively yes. There was no doubt in his mind that had he had the power he to destroy the world, he would be a very different man.

He shook that thought away. “Have you met Steve yet?” he laughed at Bobby’s reaction to the bully freeze story. He had seen that look before. The resilience of not an ounce of regret. “I think you guys would really get along.” he smiled with a sigh. “Never a fan of bullies.” he informed. “Did the Professor come to get you?” his curiosity was uncontrollable.

It was really nice that Bobby seemed completely genuine. It reminded Sam of how he spoke of the Avengers. Avengers Tower had become his home when he really needed one. “School your whole life sounds pretty great to me actually.” he gave a genuine smile. “I got in trouble halfway through high school and then shipped myself off to the military so I never really got the option of staying in school forever.” he shrugged.

“Steve was the one who arranged our meeting actually. He and Xavier hashed it out that the X-Men and the Avengers share similar goals. We shouldn’t be strangers; we should work together to make the world a better, safer place,” Bobby said. “I guess Steve didn’t tell you how he came to know me then. I was Christmas shopping last year in Brooklyn. Some Friends of Humanity, Kelly-loving goons pounced on me when I used my powers to amuse a kid. So, like you said, not a fan of bullies, Steve stepped right in scared them off before it got ugly. They took one looked at Cap and were like, nope! We had coffee after and Steve came to the mansion a few months later to check the school out for himself. It meant a lot to the kids to see someone like him here, to know that Captain America was on their side even when it felt like the rest of the outside world was against them.”

As they made their way through the commons, Bobby stopped and turned to Sam, saying, “Now, you see all of this old architecture? Super retro, right? With the exception of our dorms and the more recent additions, most of the mansion doesn’t look like its changed much since the Victorian era. But lo! There be magic here.” Bobby waved a hand over a tablet on the wall and a large hologram of the outside of the mansion generated in front of Sam. “It’s not Stark tech, but it’s probably as advanced. And while technology isn’t my strong suit, I do know work this baby.”

Bobby poked the center of the hologram changing it into a simple blue print of the mansion. “So we’re here in the commons. We can head over to the cafeteria here if you’re feeling hungry. We have our own chefs on staff, many of whom are former students who returned the X-Mansion after culinary school. We also have a few interesting sites nearby, our school’s ballroom and theatre. Or if you’d like to see some classes in progress we can head upstairs. We could even scope out the library here, if you’re a bookworm. Xavier’s got a real treasure trove of classics there.”

A giant grin spread across Sam’s face. That sounded exactly like Steve. Never did learn how to run from a good fight. It was one of his most admirable qualities. “Yeah, it’s definitely awesome having the big guy on your side.” he nodded. “But from what I’ve been told that was always him. Even when he was ‘just a scrawny kid from brooklyn.’ Running from a fight has never been an option.” he assured. “It’s fantastic until he’s getting your ass shot up alongside him.” he laughed lightly. Steve Rogers was a good man and Sam would follow him anywhere.

His thoughts were cut short by a sudden burst of laughter. Bobby was talking about magic and in that magic he decided he liked this kid. Once he stopped his laughter and caught his breath a question popped into his head. “Wow, I’ve been so submersed in Stark Tech that I didn’t even realize there were other types of technology still around.” He looked at the tablet curiously.

“Do me a favor.” he said quietly as he moved closer to examine the blueprint. “Don’t tell Stark. It may just burst his ego and nobody wants that.” he whispered with a grin as his eyes turned from Bobby to the blue prints.  He pondered for a moment. Where to start? This place was huge and he’d been dreaming of it since he was a young child. But was it the mansion he’d been dreaming of or was it the X-men themselves? He instantly knew what he wanted to do first. “How do you guys train?” he smiled as his eyes met Bobby’s again.

One would think Sam got enough out of training for hours at the Tower but that was different. To fight an actual X-man that was different. That was what he had come here for. That was why his pack was out in the car. He had no idea how it worked and he was about 90% certain the guy in front of him could kill him instantaneously but he had to know.

There it was! Just when Sam thought his day could not possibly get any worse he DID run into somebody. And this wasn’t just somebody. This was a girl; a cute girl at that. Of all the gin joints in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

Before he knew it, there was a picture. Great now there was photographic evidence that some stranger had of him looking like a fool. Everyone on the team would know before long! This was almost as bad as the time he had gotten his ass handed to him by Scott Lang. “Uh…” he started as she ripped one of the insects off him. That had not been pleasant. His hand instinctively shot to the spot to rub it.

“Ronal…” he started again but she spoke so fast it was hard to keep up in his current state of mind. “Yes.” that was the first actual statement he had been able to get out and it seethed out of his lips. Stark. he frowned. Panic soon replaced the frown as he recalled the last few moments. “Uh, Darcy? What can I do to convince you to NOT post that picture?” he flashed a Wilson smile as best he could. This girl was so weird but he had to admit he wasn’t NOT into it.

She chuckled a little bit as he spoke, nodding a little bit. “Figured it was Stark. He’s such a boob.” She laughed. He was funny though, and they were cool with each other. “Don’t worry Mr. Falcon! I will avenge you shortly when I slip some hair dye in his very expensive conditioner.” She looked up when he said her name, grinning wickedly back at the smile. “Well, seeing as I’m not gonna be that person that posts pictures that aren’t wanted, Ill keep it from the world wide web. As long as I get your number to go along with it in my contacts.” She said smoothly, nudging him. “I wouldn’t mind another hot hero to have in my list of peeps.”  Besides, she had already made it her background picture. She could see  his discomfort though, at having all of the little creatures on him. “Goin’ to med lab?” She asked, head tilting. “If you want to spare yourself some embarrassment you can come to my room here. I can help you with all of those. I was a country girl before I came to the big apple. I know how to get theses babies off.”

A blush crept over Sam’s cheeks. He wasn’t quite sure his skin could reach a deeper level of red but the vast amount of heat radiating off of his face told him it was possible. “Can’t say it’d hurt to avoid public humiliation and get a cute girl’s number in the process.” he flashed that Wilson grin. Maybe today was not so terrible afterall...

He looked at the button for med lab and then met Darcy’s eyes again. His shoulders shrugged. “Looks like my day just got better.” he laughed lightly. “Lead the way, Ms.Lewis.”

There was a moment of silence on his side of the conversation. His brain was racing on how the day had come to this. When he’d woken up this morning, it was just a normal day, that had been the plan. No pond, no leeches, no suprise cuties...just a normal day of flying and fighting and training and maybe grabbing a beer...he couldn’t honestly say he minded the turn of events. Suddenly, he remembered something else from the conversation.

“Hold up...what color are we talkin?” the thought of anything but Stark black was enough to make him laugh but he was curious to know just what the strange, interesting girl in front of him had in mind.

I told Steve you’d be too scared. 

Pietro scowled at Sam’s words, getting just as riled up as the man probably predicted he would. “I’m not scared.” He insisted hotly, folding his arms over his chest in a defensive posture. 

“I run faster than one of these things could ever fly. Why would I need to fly one?” He insisted, not liking at all that anyone thought he’d be too scared to do something. But that Sam and Steve had said this behind his back? Oh, that got Pietro real agitated.

Obviously Sam knew how to press his buttons better than Pietro gave him credit for. 

“Can’t be that hard.” He insisted, scoffing loudly. “I mean, you’re doing it aren’t you?” He asked, tipping his head to the side. “I’m sure I could too.”

Sam suppressed his smile. He knew if Pietro got wind of that the whole plan would be blown. The kid (he was barely younger than him but Sam couldn’t help thinking of him as an angsty teenager) was definitely a prime candidate for reverse psychology.

Now was the moment of truth. On the one hand, he really thought that this would be a great bonding experiment in trust. On the other, he was not really looking to die today...

Trust won over reason every time with him. Sam Wilson was a Hufflepuff through and through. Everyone was granted trust until they proved they didn’t deserve it. Plus, he really wanted to prove Steve right. Steve had told him to give Pietro a chance (grant it he didn’t tell him to give him control of a heli-carrier but still).

“Alright, hot shot.” he threw on a smirk and pushed away from the control panel. “You’re do it then.” he crossed his arms and looked at him.

Sam couldn’t help but smile at her comment about herself. She wasn’t wrong. He was glad that she had been the one to walk into this bar. His few interactions with other mutants had been…less than pleasant so it was nice to have a friendly face looking back at him.

His eyes couldn’t help but grow wide at her explanation of powers. He had always thought of mutations as a good thing…a badass thing even. He had longed to develop his own as a child. But that….that sounded terrifying. He was such an extrovert, such a people person, he thrived on physical contact. He couldn’t imagine how he’d get by without it.

“That must be lonely.” he said quietly as he took another swig. Her revelation hadn’t made him afraid of her; quite the contrary. It filled him with respect. How could somebody who can’t touch anybody be so sweet and funny? Something told him she had no idea that that was her real gift. This was clearly a sore subject so he decided to move right along. 

“I’d LOVE to see some of your paintings and drawings sometime!” he beamed. “Also what kind of pie are we talkin here?” he looked at her skeptically. “I need an answer to that before we talk about singing.” he joked taking another sip.

“Wait,” he spat out his drink in mock horror.  “What on Earth do you do in the summertime? Don’t you die of heat exhaustion?!” he made a mock panic face.

“Y’have no idea.’ She snorted at his near whisper. She grabbed her beer then, polishing it off before she motioned for another one to be served to her. “It’s not so bad though.”  She looked at the beer that was placed in front of her, staring down the neck before she turned to smile at him as he spoke about her painting. “Alright. I’ll let y’see ‘em sometime. Maybe I’ll paint y’somethin’ one day. Who knows?” She snorted then, head shaking. “Well, my best is pecan pie. Though I make a mean apple.” She said.  She jumped a little as he spat out his drink, not  quite expecting it. At his panic though, she laughed, her shoulders lifting in a shrug. “Just kinda deal with it. I don’t think I’ve ever even worn a bathin’ suit.”

“Well, that’s a damn shame!” Sam furrowed his brow as he aggressively clicked his home button on his phone. ‘7:00PM’ is what the screen said. “Good, it’s still early.” he grinned.

“Hurry up and finish that beer, I got an idea.” he downed his drink and threw cash down on the bar top. “Also, you’re definitely making me an apple pie.” he beamed as he jumped up.

Dead Men Tell No Tales II Wilson Squared

Sam sighed as he turned away from the man in the mask. He walked to a nearly demolished dresser and picked through the pieces. He pulled out a small leather bible and walked back to the guy.

“Don’t worry.” he said without making eye contact. “I don’t plan on reading you the ‘riot act.’“ his voice was steady as he ran his fingers over the hole in the cover. This had been his father’s bible. He had died with it on him. It hadn’t saved him like in the movies. The bullet had gone right through. The hole was proof of that.

He opened it gently and pieced through to the middle. The pages were still stained with the copper tone of his blood. They were nearly brittle now but at the time Sam had carefully pulled each page apart so the bible could still be read. That year he had read what was left of every page. It had been his penance, his ritual, his battle cry. The end of that year was when he had killed his first man. That was supposed to be his redemption. But all it left him with was this bloodied old bible.

The page he had turned to was covered by a layer of hundreds held on with a paperclip. His fingers idly ran over the bills as he made eye contact with the mask. “How much would it take for you to bury him?”

His face was cold. His stance unwavering. He had never believed in God. He had never believed in forgiveness. But his father had and he had believed in his father.

No matter what he had done, Mickey deserved to be buried. That’s what his father would have believed. The man who carries out the sentence should properly send him home. His father also believed that.

Wade would have walked away when Sam turned around, had he not had the feeling that their little conversation wasn’t over. Because of course it wasn’t. 

He peered at the bible in the man’s hands, his jaw clenching slightly. He wasn’t really a religious man. Not anmore. Maybe once a long long time ago, but he’d seen too much shit to believe in any higher power. So if this was going to be something about saving his soul, Wade was sure he was gonna deck this guy. 

But then….then he was holding money, and for a moment, Wade froze. He sighed, his head shaking. “I don’t want it.” He said simply. After a moment, Wade lifted his hand up, slowly removing the mask. It took a minute for him to blink and get used to the light around him, but when his eyes focused on Sam, he frowned. 

He didn’t worry that this guy was going to know his face. People knew what Wade looked like. But he hadn’t been found. And even if he was, they couldn’t do anything to him that hadn’t been done before. “Listen here dude.” He started, voice so surprinsingly soft he startled even himself. 

“Men like me. Men like him, we don’t get buried nicely. We don’t get funerals and people crying over us. We get what he just got. And that’s a cold death with maybe one person to feel pity for us. You knew this was coming for him. You just didn’t think you’d be there to see it. I’ll bury him, but I’m not taking your money. I know I’m a monster, but I’m not that much of one.”

It took Sam a moment to get over the surprise. He hadn’t expected the man to take off his mask. He had known several men who would never have done that. It was now clear to him that the man in front of him was far more complex than he’d originally thought.

He stared into his eyes and never once cringed away. It made no difference to him what he looked like. He saw past that. His father had taught him that a long time ago. What mattered is who you choose to be not what has led you to that decision.

Then something else happened. Sam was caught off guard for a second time by the stranger in front of him. He didn’t want the money? Wasn’t that what this had all been about in the first place? No. Of course that’s not what this had been about. Then he did something that surprised him almost as much. Sam smiled at Wade Wilson.

He got it now. Everything Steve had told him about Bucky. Everything Rhodey had told him about Tony. It all made sense. Being in the military and living his life under his father’s moral compass had taught him that there is a right and a wrong. But they hadn’t taught him that sometimes good people do the wrong thing for good reasons. In that moment, Sam Wilson grew up and realized that the world wasn’t just good guys and bad guys.

“Sam Wilson.” he held out his hand. He wasn’t forgiving Wade. He had no interest in doing that. But he did decide that he was worth saving. That was something Sam “The Falcon” Wilson was quite good at.

To say Sam was impressed would be the greatest understatement. The school was just like he had imagined. The only things missing were the moving staircases. “Are we sure J.K.Rowling isn’t a mutant?” he joked with a smile. “You gotta admit her rendition wasn’t too far off.” he laughed lightly.

Then the thoughts began to spiral. Oh my God…what if she IS a mutant? Maybe somebody has the mutant power to create worlds?! Maybe it is her? Does Diagon Alley actually exist? Sam, focus! He was really glad that was all in his head and that as far as he knew Bobby’s super powers didn’t include mind reading.

“Professor Blake?” He raised a skeptical eyebrow. “No offense dude but how old are you?” he laughed lightly. “Cause that was definitely unexpected.” Maybe he just had a baby face or maybe he was like Peter and having powers made him grow up quicker. 11 to 13 was incredible to hear. At that age he was still only focused on being the best altar boy at his daddy’s church. He couldn’t imagine having to deal with something that life altering at such a young age. “It’s a good thing they have the school. I can’t imagine what it must have been like for those of you who had powers prior to it’s opening.” he gave a soft sigh. “It’s hard enough becoming a teenager. You already think you’re different than everybody and nobody understands. I can’t imagine what it must have been like to find truth in that.” he frowned.

Bobby’s last comment brought his smile flashing back. “Yeah that’s a real fear without having to worry about frying somebody’s brain.” He flashed back to his first crush. He had word vomited all over her, earning him the nickname “motormouth” for much of his childhood. He couldn’t imagine the type of nickname he would have gotten had he set her hair on fire or something of the sort.

“How long have you been here, Bobby?”

Bobby nodded at Sam’s words. He didn’t have to lecture a black man in America about prejudice. The funny thing about intersectionality was the shared experiences that came about despite being from seemingly different worlds. Mutants and black folk both had the misfortune of finding themselves viewed as problems by society before they were viewed as people. Bobby imagined it wouldn’t be as hard for Sam to empathize as it might for other visitors, unless the Falcon’s head was as high up in the clouds as he could be.

“Me?” Bobby asked, wide eyed for a fleeting moment as he turned to face Sam. “Oh, well, I came here when I was twelve. I gave a school bully a serious case of frostbite. They almost had to amputate his feet. I’m not sure why everyone got so upset. I mean, he deserved it. Anyway! People got wind that I was a ‘mutie’ and before long there was a lynch mob outside my house. Needless to say, it wasn’t a healthy living environment for me anymore. I’ve been here learning and, now, teaching ever since. Granted, I did escape for college. But I’ve been in school my whole life. Sounds like a real nightmare, right? Well, this place is different. At least, I’d like to think so.”

Bobby shot Sam a grin. He hoped it didn’t sound too salesman-y to say. It was what he genuinely felt, though how to express and do it justice was a little beyond him.

Sam tried to imagine himself at twelve. He remembered the little boy who was obsessed with superheroes. He remembered all of the stories about the X-Men and mutants. He had devoured them. He had been obsessed. He’d dressed up as Wolverine from ages eight to thirteen. How would his feelings have changed if he had discovered he DID have super powers? Wishing for them was one thing but having all of that uncontrollable power at that age...

It was then that he imagined the damage he could have done had he had powers that fateful night. Would his father be alive? Would he have really killed that man at sixteen? His answer to both of those questions made him sick to his stomach. It was ‘yes’; positively yes. There was no doubt in his mind that had he had the power he to destroy the world, he would be a very different man.

He shook that thought away. “Have you met Steve yet?” he laughed at Bobby’s reaction to the bully freeze story. He had seen that look before. The resilience of not an ounce of regret. “I think you guys would really get along.” he smiled with a sigh. “Never a fan of bullies.” he informed. “Did the Professor come to get you?” his curiosity was uncontrollable.

It was really nice that Bobby seemed completely genuine. It reminded Sam of how he spoke of the Avengers. Avengers Tower had become his home when he really needed one. “School your whole life sounds pretty great to me actually.” he gave a genuine smile. “I got in trouble halfway through high school and then shipped myself off to the military so I never really got the option of staying in school forever.” he shrugged.

You had a bad day II Wilson & Lewis

Tony is a dead man. Sam thought as he trudged into the lobby. He was quite the sight. He was drenched and there were leaches clinging to almost every visible part of skin.

“Did you have a nice swim today, Mr.Wilson?” the man behind the desk was stifling laughter.

“Glad to see you haven’t lost your sense of humor, Carl.” he glared in response as he clutched his jacket in his arms. Unfortunately for Sam, he was never quite good at glaring. They always looked peculiar on his face, too many laugh lines he assumed. So all his glare did was cause Carl to laugh some more. He couldn’t blame him. Had it been anyone else he would be laughing. Of course he’d at least make sure they were alright first. These little fucker hurt like shit not to mention there was no knowing how much blood he’d already lost. He wasn’t quite feeling loopy just yet so he figured he’d live but he’d be damned if he knew how to get ‘em off.

His plan was to get up to the medical wing without running into anybody else along the way. That’s all he needed was for Clint or Natasha to see him stumbling through the hallways. He’d never live that down.

As he shuffled further he thought about how this had happened in the first place. He looked down at the bundle in his arms that was still trying to break free. “Stupid fucking robot.” he sighed as he approached the elevator. This was why he had wanted a real bird. Real birds didn’t go malfunctioning and leading you into a fucking swamp. But nooo Stark had convinced him that he could make a  bad ass bird and the best part was it would need no maintenance.

Just get to the med wing, Sam. Nobody else is gonna see you. Just get in the elevator. He convinced himself as the elevator doors opened.

Darcy had a killer talent for walking into situations at the perfect time. This moment here was one of them. She was on the elevator, beanie skewed and glasses low on her nose as her fingers flew over the keyboard. Yes she was in Stark tower. Hacking Stark tower. Ever since she has first done it, she made a game of it. Stark would up the security and Darcy would weasel her way in. It was glorious.

Once she finished the hack, resulting in all of Tony’s social media to proclaim his love for her, and for his picture to be a fanart of him and Justin Bieber, she realized she was on the floor she needed to be. Humming she walked out, grunting when she ran head first into someone. “Oof.” Blinking, she looked up to the wall in front of her before her mouth fell open.

So this was The Falcon. Caps cool friend with the bad ass wings. Not wanting to miss and opportunity, she decided to forgo words and turn to take a selfie with him in all of his leeched up glory. “Okay so totally not how I imagined this happening. But Hi Darcy Lewis. You have leeches everywhere. Kinda cool. Kinda gross.” She said simply, leaning in to take gold of one. It took a moment, but after a few good squeezes and tugs it came free. “This one is going to be Ronaldo.”

She grinned at him then, taking stock of the situation. “Hmmm. Grumpy wet kitten face, struggling robo bird, unfortunate disaster involving weird critters…. Lemme guess. Stark?” She asked, head tilting.

There it was! Just when Sam thought his day could not possibly get any worse he DID run into somebody. And this wasn’t just somebody. This was a girl; a cute girl at that. Of all the gin joints in all the world, she had to walk into mine.

Before he knew it, there was a picture. Great now there was photographic evidence that some stranger had of him looking like a fool. Everyone on the team would know before long! This was almost as bad as the time he had gotten his ass handed to him by Scott Lang. “Uh...” he started as she ripped one of the insects off him. That had not been pleasant. His hand instinctively shot to the spot to rub it.

“Ronal...” he started again but she spoke so fast it was hard to keep up in his current state of mind. “Yes.” that was the first actual statement he had been able to get out and it seethed out of his lips. Stark. he frowned. Panic soon replaced the frown as he recalled the last few moments. “Uh, Darcy? What can I do to convince you to NOT post that picture?” he flashed a Wilson smile as best he could. This girl was so weird but he had to admit he wasn’t NOT into it.

What the Hell II Wilson & LeBeau

Sam had just gotten back to the Tower from a late night flight. Nearly everybody else was out of town on some mission or another. That seemed to be the case nowadays. If you weren’t on a mission with somebody you’d hardly see them at all. So much for being a team. he shrugged as he walked towards the elevator.

It wasn’t too terrible. At least he could go flying when he felt lonely. Sam was a people person so he felt lonely quite a bit. So this late night excursion was hardly unusual.

Still something in the air felt a bit off tonight. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it. He was never one to be afraid of the silence but even the computers seemed to be sleeping. He wondered briefly who WAS actually in the Tower tonight as he pressed the up button.

Remy wasn’t one to complain about having time off. In fact he loved it. It gave him a chance to paint, draw, or sometimes even marathon some movies. Quiet nights at the Tower weren’t that different from quiet nights at Xavier’s mansion. Except here there were less teenagers trying to prank each other or some of the teachers.

He planned on settling on his floor and having a horror movie marathon while everyone else was away. This way he wouldn’t bother anyone if they managed to hear him scream from a jump scare. Well, he wouldn’t bother anyone but his kittens.

A quick prayer was said so the sky wouldn’t fall any time soon so he could try to relax tonight. Remy knew the odds of having a completely uneventful night were slim at best, what with him being a ‘hero’ and all. But a man could dream.

The elevator dinged and stopped a few floors below his own. So there was someone else here tonight? Remy blinked in surprise when the doors opened and he was greeted by an unfamiliar face. “Umm… Bonjour, mon ami,” he greeted with a small smile.

Sam’s body did a spasm that he didn’t know he was capable of. That’s what happened when he got caught off guard. He was always so on guard when it came to fighting and being prepared that when he was “off” he was REALLY off. That trait made him an excellent horror movie companion due to his constant panic attacks.

When the man in front of him spoke, his panic quelled a little bit. It was unlikely someone trying to kill him would say ‘mon ami’...thought not impossible.

“Look dude. I don’t know what you’re doing in here but I’ve gotta warn you I can do all sorts of taewando shit and I can get back up here in moments!” he threw on his most serious face.

He was trying his best not to give away the fact that he had no idea where anybody was, how this dude got in past security and if Friday was even functioning right now.
