Behind The Scenes of Ever & Anon | The Fashion Film

Ever & Anon is the latest innovation from Solent staff and graduates. Anon magazine is our yearly publication that showcases the talent here at Solent. Ever & Anon is a short Fashion Film that represents the next chaper for Solent creatives. 

The theme for the film was 2015 | 2020, from which stylists and make-up artists had to create a concept for 2015 and how that concept will change and evolve for 2020. 

This short film will provide a snap shot of the vision of both staff and students from the unique and prestigious Media and Fashion Styling programme at Southampton Solent University.   

Students were asked to submit two moodboards that illustrated their vision for the project and subsequently a team of make-up artists and stylists was chosen to work on the project. 

On the day of the shoot, the team was busy getting all the looks done in the make-up studio before heading out to Southampton’s Medieval Vaults, where the project was being filmed. 

The filming was done at a quick pace and with a one point perspective and the project sourced professional models that showcases different ages and ethnicities. 

The producer and director was  Programme Group Leader, Media and Fashion Styling, Jennifer Anyan, with Lily Anna Mills as assistant producer and director. 

The team that worked on the film was comprised of both make-up artists and stylists and included both staff and students.

ASTROGATE - Lorna Pratt’s Final Major Project

Astrogate is Lorna Pratt’s Final Major Project. Lorna is a final year Make-up and Hair Design student that created this online exhibition that “directly investigates the in-between spaces where the digital, physical and fictional overlap and interest.“

Astrogate seeks to create an immersive experience of cinematic quality, translating narrative and connecting to its audience on an emotional level.

The project consists of six beautfully designed photoshoots, each with its individual theme. These six photoshoots are named accordingly: Fissure, Divergence, Speculum, Miedzy, Refuscent State and Heteroptopia. The names work successfully to enhance the outcome of the project. 

Astrogate questions our current experience of reality and explores “virtual” spaces to adress contemporary life.This is done by beautifully excuted and well researched visual imagery that has a very unique aesthetic. 

Lorna has achieved all of the imagery presented in her FMP by employing a very distinctive layering process and by combining a variety of ingredients to create something spectacular. 

In the series ‘Divergence’, which can be seen below, she combined the use of paint on glass as well as double exposure and flash to create a series of images that are visually remarkable.

Dormiveglia - A Journey into the Subconscious by Lily Anna Mills

For her final major project, Lilly Mills has created the project ‘Dormiveglia’.

Dormiveglia is a dark, surreal and artistic exploration of the space that stretches between sleeping and waking. The subconscious. Evoking beauty, dark fantasy and darker surreal fashion imagery.

 When asked about why she sought to produce ‘Dormiveglia’, Lilly said that it was the kind of project in which she would be able to explore elements of dreams and the subconscious mind. This project has also given her the freedom to create images upon which the viewers can actually make their own judgements , without being told what to feel. The eerie feel present in the images was created with camera effects only.  

 When asked why the name ‘Dormiveglia’ for the project, Lilly replied:

“Dormiveglia is an Italian phrase that means the state of being half asleep and half awake this perfectly summed up the idea of my project and made a more intriguing title allowing the viewer to discover the meaning of the word.”

Solent Lovely Spotlight - Daniela Yordanova

Year by year, it is incredible to come across the first year Make-up and Hair Design students’ work. 

The standards are surely being raised each year. Today, the Solent Lovely under our spotlight is Daniela Yordanova.

Read below for a little snippet of her creative process.

LSM Team: What kind of make-up do you enjoy to do the most?

 Daniela: With make-up it’s either a full makeover or something very minimalistic.

 LSM Team: Do you have a signature style?

 Daniela: I’m still new to makeup art, so I can’t say that I have a specific style. I’m still exploring what I can do with different products, brushes, models, etc.

 LSM Team: What would the perfect project be like?

 Daniela: The perfect project would be to create the whole high fashion look. By the whole look I mean everything from hair, makeup and styling to setting the studio, taking the pictures and editing. I love being in charge, but if there is someone as passionate as I am, I love working in a team as well.

 LSM Team: What inspires your work?

 Daniela: I get inspired by buildings, textures, nature and basically everything around me.

 LSM Team: Any favourite make-up artists?

 Daniela:  I prefer not to look into other’s people work too much. I feel that I might accidentally copy someone’s idea.

  LSM Team: Where can people see your work?

 Daniela: I decided to make a blog where I could showcase my work, and did that on Tumblr , because it’s free haha. I am hoping for my own website soon, so my page would look as professional as my work.

 LSM Team: Other than your Tumblr page, are there any other places where people can find you and your work?

 Daniela: Other accounts...well I would say Facebook (Daniela Yordanova) is the best place to see me and some of my work. The models I use for my shoots always end up putting the final photo as a profile picture, so I have plenty of tagged images where you can see my work. And the same goes for my Instagram (sucks2beyoou). I do regret the name I chose haha but that’s how people find me on there.

Aquarius Rising - Final Major Project by Irisha Cross

Drawing inspiration from many sci-fi films and books, Irisha Cross has decided to create a project that would bring awareness to sustainability and environmental issues that our planet is facing nowadays.

She says that as an artist/designer, she feels the responsibility to bring consciousness and address these problems. The post-apocalyptic story “Aquarius Rising – In the Tears of God” (B. Burt), was the main reference for her project.

The story line revolves around the idea of what happens after humankind is wiped out of the planet due to global warming, and how the Earth is re-populated with the emergence of human-dolphin hybrids named Aquarians. 

As opposed to the doomed post-apocalyptic fear, Irisha’s intention was to create an outcome with a positive message, as she is a firm believer that “we create our own reality”.

She has opted to reinterpretate nine characters from the book. The idea of sustainability was incorporated through the use of recycled materials to style the characters. Some of Irisha’s favourite mediums were papier-mâché, modroc and clay.

Solent Students Collaborate  With Innovative New Clothing Company

In early February two of our third year students were offered the opportunity to key the makeup and hair for fresh new clothing brand Point Blank , by designer Yan Yu Chung.

Based in London, Point Blank employed the talents of Sophie Chung and Meghann Stevens to create innovative makeup and hair design for their brand new A/W 15/16 collection, which is due to showcase this Friday at the Hoxton Basement, London.

The shoot consisted of one day shooting for the brands debut look book, and two days filming the promo video, which can be seen below.  Sophie will also be returning this Friday to key the hair and makeup for the showcase.

Sophie gave us an insight into what it was like working for such an innovative new company. “The team was really professional; it was a tight-knit group who were able to come together to freely discuss creative ideas. We worked really well together, and were able to resolve any problems that came up.

It was a unique experience; everything was quite experimental and we were in a very creative space, enabling us to produce something that was really fresh. The brand has architectural influences which lends a really individual, rebellious approach to the designs.

The upcoming showcase on Friday will be a really exciting chance to see the final collection come together. The event should attract industry processionals, such as representatives from Topshop, so I’m extremely excited to be able to be there and network with other creatives. “

Back to Medieval times with Hannah Colton & her Final Major Project

Hannah Colton is a final year Make-up and Hair Design student that decided to bring back Special Effects Makeup, since she believes that films nowadays use too many computer based special effects. Her FMP consisted in creating two books inspired by urban legends with a medieval twist. 

One of the books is handmade and contains Hannah’s illustrations of medieval demons, and the second book is a professional looking portfolio where the demons have been re-created with models.

When asked about why making two books for her FMP, Hannah said: “I made two books to mirror my personality as an artist. One is rustic and imaginative, and the other is professional.”

Hannah has taken her artistic skills a step further by creating a book completely from scratch. Its creative process included creating the book’s cover, painting the book and adding decorative details.

Hannah said that producing the book was her favourite part of the project and also an opportunity for her to create something unique.

Some of her preparations for the looks involved using prosthetics and many other kinds of resources. 

Among other products, Hannah has succeeded in creating scars, tongues, teeth and horns.

Nars Skincare Campaign by Naomi Halfacre

Naomi Halfacre has created this beautiful interpretation of a Nars Skincare campaign for one of her University projects. 

When asked about the project, Naomi said that she wanted the look to be fresh and clean to reflect on what the brand stands for. She also noted that Nars use white for all of their skincare range, which inspired her to create this natural look. 

What makes these images so visually striking is the use of Lush Bath Bombs. Naomi and the photographer for the project, Ellize McBride, went to Lush to pick out the best products to use to achieve the look that they were going for. 

Even though at first, Naomi wanted to use a white bath bomb to create a cloudy effect, she noticed that the colours from other bath bombs mixed well with the white and she decided to add them to the water as well. 

The light used was natural and as Naomi noted, that added to the freshness of the images.

The shoot was experimental and something Naomi had never done before but she said that she enjoyed it and that she felt the outcome was really succesful and judging by the beautiful images, we can only agree.

Solent Lovely Spotlight : Brindi Cristiana

Brindi Cristiana is a third year Make-up and Hair Design student and for her Final Major Project she is creating YouTube videos that range from make-up tutorials to product reviews and videos showcasing her favourite beauty products.  

Her videos have an informal, approachable yet professional style and approach a variety of subjects.

The reason she decided to create a YouTube channel for her FMP is that she felt that this would be the most successful way of marketing herself to the industry, at the time being and in the future. She hopes to continue with the channel even after FMP is completed.

In addition to her YouTube videos, she has also created various social media accounts, like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter, to help her promote her channel.

Solent Lovely Spotlight: Adam Lee Swain of Alien Androgyny

“Alien Androgyny is a look into the mind of makeup artist Adam Lee Swain. Currently in his last year of study for BA (hons) Makeup and Hair Design at Southampton Solent University, he is also trained by industry expert David Horne at House of GlamDolls.” 

That is how Adam describes Alien Androgyny, his Major Project for his final year at Solent.

When asked about the reason he decided to create this website for his FMP he said: 

“I started my blog Alien Androgyny for two reasons, the first being to talk about my favourite thing, makeup, and to share my opinions on brands and products, as well as sharing my makeup work. The second reason was to help those out there who are struggling with their gender identity. If a young individual was to come across my blog I hope it would show them that they can present themselves however they wish without being held back by traditional gender stereotypes.”

Alien Androgyny is an all comprising website with articles, videos and photo shoots. Here is where’s Adam’s skills and creativity are best explored. He creates poignant articles on beauty matters such as product and beauty book reviews and even make-up artistry courses reviews. 

Aside from his written content, Adam also creates video content for Alien Androgyny. His weekly videos are uploaded to YouTube and feature a variety of subjects like make-up tutorials and also vlogs, where he discusses the latest fashion/beauty subject that is of interest to him. 

In addition, Alien Androgyny has a Featured Artist article from time to time, where Adam gives recommendations in regards to whose work he likes to follow and why he enjoys that artist’s work.

Adam also has an active presence on all forms of social media, the Alien Androgyny Instagram account serving as both visual inspiration for make-up artists and enthusiasts and as an insight into Adam’s world! 

Adam says that Alien Androgyny will not end once his FMP is done and that he plans on continuing with the website in the future so make sure to follow Adam on social media and subscribe to his YouTube channel to keep up to date with all that is Alien Androgyny!

Custom Design Solent Face Charts

Face Charts are an integral part of creating a make-up look. They serve to showcase a specific make-up design and they are very useful for fashion shows, so that all make-up artists are familiarised with the look. 

Make-up and Hair Design Students make great use of face charts, for character designs, to ensure continuity for looks that may require multiple shoots and for getting their ideas across in a more visual manner. 

They are a staple in every make-up artist’s kit and now Southampton Solent students have their very own, custom designed face charts. 

These face charts were designed by Kat Vogart, Solent Lecturer and Make-up and Hair Design graduate.

They have a very modern and sleek design, to ensure that all make-up looks created on them have a professional look. 

As with other face charts, the Solent one has allotted slots for base, face, eyes and lips so that students can write down all the products used. This allows the students to recreate the look at any time,if needed, with no effort as they have both the visual and the written information, all on one page.

No doubt, these face charts will be very useful to students and they are a great addition to everyone’s kit!

RAZOR

It’s not just the makeup and hair students that get to gettheir hands dirty. These stunning images were created by Fashion Styling withHair and Makeup student Sasha Halsey for her FMP, Razor Magazine.

Razor is a hybrid of the alternative and high fashion worlds, with its first issue focussing around gothic culture.

The styling, concept, makeup and hair was done and directed by Sasha herself, and she collaborated with photographer Oliver Dobbin.  She said, “I loved working with the photographer Oliver Dobbin, we work really well together as a team and he understands what I need and takes direction really well. I think the key to an awesome image, whether it be fashion or beauty, is a  great team that you can communicate with – it’s is essential.” 

“I am studying Fashion Styling with Hair and Makeup and love both worlds, so when I get the chance to do makeup on a shoot I love being so involved in the whole creative side of styling and beauty. I have definitely  learnt that you need a few extra eyes to give you opinions on things, as being the main creative can make it hard to see the whole picture.”

Violette Boleli’s recent collaboration

As part of a Brand Identity project, second year Violette Boleli collaborated with photography student Apertureka Photography to produce these images inspired by MAC.

Collaborative efforts like this is something that enables Solent students to build up their professional portfolios to take with them through to industry.

She said, “I was inspired by a MAC advertisement to create this look.The play of contrast with the bright blue and pink headscarf with the bright pink glitter against the model’s skin tone tells a story.”

March Open Day

On the 14th of March, The Faculty of Creative Industries held another open day for future students. The theme this time was Gothic Punk and the team was made up of second and third year students, both from Make-up and Hair Design and Fashion Styling. 

Prospective students got a chance to see the Solent Lovelies in their element and got a glimpse of what could be in store for them if they choose to come to Solent. 

An addition tothe last open day was that, this time around, prospective students got the chance to let us know their opinions, by filling in a questionnaire. Their feedback has been very positive, somebody rating it a 10/10, which is what we call success. The main general opinion was that everyone on the team was very friendly and approachable and the future students felt comfortable asking all the questions they might have had.

Cat Parnell Guest Lecture & Masterclass

On the 3rd of March, the Solent Lovelies got a visit from Cat Parnell, a make-up artist and Solent Make-up and Hair Design 2011 graduate. 

Since graduating, Cat has been very busy in building a successful career in make-up artistry. In hertalk she presented an overview of her journey, providing some tips for the upcoming graduates.

Herinitial process involved doing a lot of research on TV jobs, productioncompanies or e-commercial jobs, as the companies shoot regularly and offer a regular income. The next step was to e-mail as many companies as possible (sometimes she would send 200 e-mails a day).

Her advice was to contact each one directly in order to be more personal and to show the portfolio. Her main tip is to remain persistent, as it can make a difference in getting employment.

After the lecture, Cat gave a masterclass showcasing her experience in the make-up industry and sharing her knowledge of products and techniques.

Cat also provided some insight about the industry. According to her it is worthy to keep options open, since it is a good manner to add new skills and knowledge.

For the masterclass, Cat created a natural glam look.

Cat’s final advice to the students included that it is essential to pack appropriately in order to travel lighter, be flexible regarding schedules and adaptable, bearing in mind it is always important to aim high.

The day was a success and the Solent Lovelies were very grateful to Cat for her advice and expertise.
