âGet out of the way!â Takuan yelled, and the next thing Saizo felt was a heavy impact as Takuan knocked him off his saddle, the arrow narrowly zipping past his head. They both crashed onto the grass hard, and Takuan rolled off him, panting. The clean rain beaded on the elaborate silver mask that Takuan always wore on the right side of his face, spanning from just below his cheekbone, up the side of his nose, and to his hairline. His right eye flashed dangerously through the eyehole, the intricate silver patterns gleaming.
âVery generous today, arenât we? It isnât like us to be so helpful.â Saizo told him, and Takuan shot him a deadly glare. He simply laughed in response. Giving Saizo an annoyed look, Takuan whistled twice sharply, a signal for Abelard to flee from the battleground. Yuki followed him, as did Kuro, and Saizo unsheathed his twin katana.
âThere!â In the blink of an eye, Takuan launched a manriki gusari chain at an archer concealed in the foliage. The weighted chain wrapped itself twice around the enemyâs neck, sending him crashing to the ground, hard. There was a painful crunch as his head snapped back, and Takuan winced in sympathy.
âAttack, attack!â Saizo could hear Shingen shouting from the front of the line. Takuan sighed with resignation as the retainers ran to their weapons, the rain beading down the cold steel. He drew out his recurve bow, several different pieces of polished wood worn from handling carefully glued together, making an elaborate âSâ shape. Then, with deadly speed and accuracy, Takuan loaded and fired, loaded and fired in smooth practiced movements drilled into his muscle memory. The deadly thrum of the bow soon became consistent as several hawk feathered arrows found their mark in many an archer.
Saizo took a moment to appreciate the ease with which Takuan used a bow, as ninja usually relied on shuriken, before entering the fray himself.
âWoo! I am Sanada Genjirou Yukimura! Remember me!â He heard Yukimura whooping as he felled enemy after enemy with his spear and deadly speed, then laughed when he heard Takuanâs reply of âI will remember you for this and slap you after the battle, stupid Yukimura!â
The blade scythed through the enemy easily. Saizo recognised the men, the gold and red plates of their armour marking them as daimyo Yokoshizeâs warriors.
Thunder boomed, as if heralding the deaths of the men on the ground, and Saizo heard, for a reason unknown to himâŠ
âWatch out for Takuan for me, please.â
Reiâs voice, and his heart softened for but a moment. He turned, trying to spot Takuan, and snorted in laughter when he saw him somersaulting out of the way of two soldiers whoâd tried to stab him simultaneously, and ended up piercing their own allies in the gut. Takuanâs fighting style was rather amusing, he thought, before returning to his own battle. Brother and sister were truly polar opposites. Blood spattered on his cheek as he slashed the man in a deadly double diagonal cut with his blade, staining his hair, face, arm and clothes red. Shaking his head, he wondered how long it would take to remove the blood of the fallen from his clothes. Suddenly hearing a sharp cry, he turned.
An enemy warrior was cornering Momochi, black teeth flashing, barbed spear raisedâŠ
âŠAnd was thrown to the side as Takuan body slammed him full force, throwing him off balance and sending him reeling face first into the mud. Doing a front flip on the warriorâs body, Takuan easily landed to his feet and side stomped the man in the face, grabbed another enemy by the lapels and slammed his forehead into the manâs nose. The warrior staggered away at the unexpected blow, his nose gushing blood.
âStop staring and do something productive!â Takuan yelled at him, before following Yukimura into the mass of the fighting, drawing a pair of straight bladed ninjato from the saya strapped onto his back. The clash of steel upon steel became more and more apparent as the fighting started to peter out, leaving only a few more red and gold soldiers standing. Slashing his way through a few more nuisances, he managed to reach Yukimura and Takuan, who were battling back to back. The silver of Takuanâs mask was now stained blood red, and he spotted a broken arrow shaft jutting out from Takuanâs thigh. However, Takuan seemed to ignore it, kicking another man in the stomach before plunging the blade straight into a neck.Â
âAre we feeling alright?â Saizo called, gesturing with his chin to the wound. Honestly, Saizo was worried for his friend, but Takuan simply scoffed and glared at Yukimura, who was looking rather abashed.
âThat idiot was too busy screaming âRemember me!â and almost got hit by an arrow.â Takuan reprimanded, shaking his head. âSee, baka, this is why I like Saizo more than you!â
âBut it wasnât my fault!â Yukimura whined as he fended off another three men with his spear. âAnd besides, now that you saved me, youâre a hero! I bet it hurts! Then youâll have gained that manly pride!â
Saizo couldnât help but let out a laugh at their banter in the middle of a battle.
âYeah, well, if Iâd known that it would hurt this much I wouldnât have saved you!âÂ
As he slammed his blade into another soldier, fighting back to back with his two closest friends, laughing and complaining, he thought that it was good to be alive.
