If shopping in bulk is not an option
I don’t live anywhere near a grocery store where I can shop in bulk. What I do instead is to be conscious of what I buy.
1. Buy seasonal. I live in Northern Europe, so there are a number of fruits and veggies that don’t grow here during the winter; tomatoes for example. I try to buy fruit and veggies after what season it is and what will naturally grow here during that season.
2. Buy local. Again, because of where I live, I try to avoid buying mango, avocado and other tropical fruits/vegetables, which I know will have to be transported a long distance. I also try to only buy products from my own country, or the ones close to me.
3. Avoid unnecessary shopping. Only buy what you need. Candy, cake, cup noodles … if you cut these things out of your shopping routine, you will not only eat healthier and save money, but will also waste less plastic as products like these almost always are wrapped in plastic.
4. Buy more. What I mean here is, instead of buying 4 bags of 0,5 kg of pasta, buy 1 bag of 2 kgs. It will still create waste, but way less than what would have been created, if you were to buy smaller portions
5. Bring a reusable bag.
6. I’m sure there are more ways to create less, feel free to add :)
No low waste effort is too small. Do what you can where you can.

What to do with books
I’ve been trying to Konmari my stuff and as a way of reducing my waste I’ve been donating the stuff I don’t need. However, I have a hard time getting rid of my books and I’d rather people be able to read books for free and not have to pay.
I’m going to make a little free Library in my front yard. I’m going to try repurposing wood so that it’s made from recycled materials too and really make it low waste.
I made my own soda syrup for my Sodastream today with a Nuka-Cola recipe from the Fallout cookbook. Now I have enough syrup I won’t need to buy soda in single use plastic or buy the plastic containers of Sodastream syrup. It’s also made with fresh fruits and tastes a lot better than store bought soda.
These bottles aren’t mine, but I just internally groaned when my grandma made me bring all of this inside her garage for her. She has a sodastream and a fridge so I don’t understand the need to buy bottles of water and soda. Especially the tiny bottles of soda since it seems like a lot more waste.
I am proud of myself for being almost repulsed by this sight because a few years ago I wouldn’t have batted an eye. However, no matter how much I try to explain that buying water bottles and soda bottle is bad for the environment, she just keeps buying more.
I made the switch to bar soap, shampoo bars, conditioner bars, and deodorant bars (which was probably the scariest switch for me personally). Everything worked great and I’m so happy that I made the switch to using products without plastic waste.
I reused my used Starbucks bottles for homemade cold brew hazelnut coffee. It tastes great and now I don’t have to worry about waking up early to make coffee.
Blueland is reimagining everyday products to save you money and space, without any plastic waste.
I found an awesome new company that’s selling cleaning sprays that come in a small tablet with a refillable bottle. Needless to say I’m going to order the entire set.
The Waste Hierarchy

Awareness about the environment and climate change is growing super fast right now among people and countries, which will only help us
Most pollution is caused by like 100 companies, but a few of those (like pepsi) are trying to cut down on that.
if this stuff keeps happening things will get even better, and the only thing stopping us really are those big companies who don’t want to pay the money to switch to more eco-friendly energy sources. i know the media tends to cause fear and stress about this stuff for a lot of people, but there really is hope.
easy things we can do:
Recycle
Plant gardens in your yard for bees if you can
Participate in community volunteer things that plant trees and gardens
Theres this search engine called ecosia that plants a tree for every 45 searches you make, it has almost 2 mil users.
Pick up trash if you see it when you’re at the beach or in nature
If you have a fair amount of money, consider donating some to trustworthy environmental organizations
Start using a reusable water bottle (like those ones at target) rather than relying on single use plastic ones.
Cut the plastic rings on plastic milk bottles. You know, the little spiky plastic ring near the cap. Birds get those things stuck around their neck and die, so cut them so that they can’t get stuck on a neck.
If you can afford it, get some of those reusable grocery bags and sue those. most grocery stores have them, and it saves a lot of waste.
When I got a new phone I decided to make an easy switch right away and instead of buying a plastic phone case I got a Pela Case. When I’m done with this case I can compost it or send it back to The company and get money off my next case.

I’ve been making small changes to my life in the past few years to reduce my waste, but I always balked at the idea that I could produce hardly any waste. I’ve switched to a reusable hydro flask that works well for both hot and cold beverages.
Other switches I’ve done include: reusable lunch containers, reusing Starbucks Frappuccino bottles for homemade ice tea, and composting food scraps.
The goal is zero waste, but for now I’ll try lowering my waste.
