          merlin. for a moment, her old friend’s face had made           her forget. almost as if his voice had triggered a flash           to a time before. when hannah still spoke about ernie in           a giggly, hushed voice late at night. when they’d had a family.           when justin had — she cut off that agonizing thought but not           before a horrible wave of grief and longing hit her.

          “That’s good.” she wasn’t sure she quite believed him — but           what could she possibly say? — “I — I’ve missed you, Ernie.”

       "Yeah, me too," he said after a moment, "I've missed you,          too. All of you. A lot." he had missed susan and zach          (though, he supposed, he'd seen the both of them quite          a bit since the war, considering they'd all gone back for          a final year). but he missed hannah, too, especially since          they hadn't spoken since the summer after the war. and          he missed justin more than he'd ever missed anyone.

       "You, uh...." he stopped for a moment; he wasn't sure that          this was a topic that was safe to broach (or if he even          wanted to) but he was compelled; he had to say something          on it. he needed to. "You're working with Hannah, right?          Can you... can you, uh, tell her that I miss her?" and that          he was sorry for everything that he'd done wrong, that he          was sorry for closing up, sorry for ruining their relationship,          their friendship, sorry for not being there to help her cope,          sorry for not being able to save justin—— "or just that I          said hi. I mean, either works."

               Even if he didn’t take the other up on it, it                was still a kind thing to offer to someone                you barely knew past a few shared classes                and a mutual friend/acquaintance. Though                it wasn’t that he didn’t want to take the offer,                he almost did want to talk about it. But it was                painful, and he felt like the list of casualties                surrounding him, the list of green flashing                lights that he had committed to memory, was                always growing. How many people had to die                before this was truly and finally over? He didn’t                want to think about it.

              "You’re a good guy, seriously, thanks.”

            Despite his on-and-off acquaintanceship with             Harry, Ernie honestly liked the Gryffindor. Perhaps             he had believed, perhaps more strongly than             anyone else, that Harry had honestly been the true             heir of Slytherin back in their second year, but he             had apologised as soon as he was certain he had             been wrong (because they had known each other             for long enough that Ernie knew Harry wouldn't have             petrified Hermione in a million years, even if he was             Salazar Slytherin's bloodpurist descendant. And             maybe he had worn those "Potter Stinks" badges a             time or two, but it was mostly for the "Support Cedric             Diggory" part, and he felt a little bad about it, because             what had Harry done wrong?

            "None of us should have to go through this alone."
