Merri nods. “For a bunch of people that were barely willing to do their homework before all this,” she says. “We’ve been keeping things up and running here pretty well.”
Gordie laughs, nodding. “We really have.” He agrees. His eyes grow sad again, though. “For people who claimed not to like her leadership, they’re still following Cassandra’s lead. I wonder if they know just how ironic that is.” He muses softly.

she looks up at him as he speaks, listening to him as if he’s saying the most interesting thing in the world. it’s pathetic, she’s sure, that school is the only thing she’s good at talking about. well, she supposes that there’s death as well - but she avoids that as much as possible. “ that’s . . . cool, i suppose, ” she shrugs, attention fixed on the table again. “ favourite subject? mine was mathematics, probably. i liked anything that relied on a concrete answer, really. analysing poetry gave me a headache. ”
Gordie nodded, smiling a little when she said what her favorite subject was. “Those were my favorite subjects too. Math or Science. I wanted to be a professor before all of this happened. And now? Well, college or university is the last thing on my mind.” He wondered if it was insensitive to bring up what he wanted to do. He felt like it was, since none of them really had the option to do so anymore, and maybe never would again. But it wasn’t as if he could take it back now. “I always struggled to understand a lot of the concepts in English class, but Math and Science were always easier.”

Merri smiles. “I guess it’s good to know,” she says. “We never know what we’re capable of until we do it, right? I always found that phrase kinda’ ominous, but it’s actually a good thing in this context.” She laughs a bit.
Gordie nodded. “I think so, too. I mean look at what we’ve all accomplished so far, being here. I’d say that’s a really good thing.” He’d expected the town to fall apart, and yet, here they all were, still somehow surviving.

addy feels her hearing start to go. slowly it fades into a deafening ring, and gaze hazes over as she stares right through gordie. the last thing she ever expected was a death like this in west ham. a murder of one of the kindest, most generous individuals they had here. which means a murderer lives among them. one of these teenagers was actually capable of killing another. who was to say she wouldn’t be next? ❝ who did it. ❞ the words come out monotone, automatic as she continues to stare through him.
Gordie notices almost immediately that Addy seems to be staring right past him, which would be cause for alarm if he hadn’t just dropped such a huge, devastating bombshell on her. “I don’t know yet. That’s what we’re trying to figure out. Allie has the Guard confiscating all the guns and I’m testing the bullets to see if any of them match the ones...” He trailed off, throat feeling like it was closing up with emotion once more.

“ what was school like for you? ” she knows it probably isn’t the most important question to ask, especially given the situation - but she can’t help it. she’s always curious about that stuff . . . even after two decades of being dead, school is pretty much the only thing she’s good at talking about. / starter call : @loyaltygave.
Gordie blinks, surprised by the question. But not in a bad way. “I mean, it wasn’t so bad.” He says. “I didn’t have many friends, but I was okay with that, because the ones I did have were true friends, anyway. And I enjoyed school as a whole, and like to think I was pretty good in school. I wasn’t valedictorian material or anything, but I was smart enough.”

“It could’ve been, yeah. You’re very good under pressure, though, I’m not sure if anyone’s ever told you that.”
Gordie smiles shyly once again, though this time he actually looks at her. “Well, it’s never been something that’s ever come up in an every day situation. But when I have a task, I’m really good at focusing on that.” He hopes he doesn’t sound like he’s bragging.

Nodding slowly, Elle hated to think about losing her, and the fact that the murderer could very well still be walking amongst them. It scared her more that Campbell was more than capable of doing something like that, and that he often referred to her as being just as capable. Shaking off her thoughts, she looked back to Gordie with a shiver. “I…I think that…you shouldn’t have to. Two people are dead now, and…if he had to be made into an example…then at least that will stop other people from…hurting anybody else.”
Gordie noticed her shiver, and instinctively removed his jacket, holding it out to her. Whether she was cold or not, he figured it was safer to at least off his jacket and have her refuse it than for him not to offer at all and for her to be cold. “Here, I’m not cold.” He had his hoodie on underneath, after all. He gave a weak smile when she said she thought he shouldn’t have to feel bad. “Thank you, for saying that Elle.” He said softly, earnestly.

“Yeah, I’m definitely going to be hesitant to celebrate it, like, ever again.” Merri can’t help but smile. The conversation’s a serious one, but his words are gentle. “Yeah, me too,” she says. “Yes I do. I think sometimes we forget to appreciate each other. Forget human kindness. What you two did was amazing.”
Well, she isn’t wrong in that people forgot to appreciate human kindness. Especially here, but he makes sure not to say that out loud. Instead, he just smiles. “Thank you. That was really nervewracking, and I’m just glad things worked out as well as they did, because I know they could’ve been so much worse.” And now he’s rambling, so he gives her an apologetic smile and looks at his hands.

Gordie’s already pretty close to breaking down-it’s a miracle he even got the words out to begin with. But Adelaine’s question makes his vision blur (again). “I wish I was, but I saw her body.” He whispered, swallowing hard once, and then twice.

“Well I mean mine don’t usually end in anyone getting poisoned,” Merri concedes. Her smile fades. “Yeah,” she says quietly. “I couldn’t sleep after that. I mean, I was pretty sure I was gonna’ die, so I feel like that’s fair….” It had been one of the most terrifying moments in her life, and Merri’s done her best to forget it as much as she can. “I never thanked you for that. You saved everyone.”
Gordie smiles a little despite the grim topic of conversation. “Nether do mine. hope no one’s Thanksgivings end up that way.” He can’t help feeling anxious thinking about it, how much worse it could’ve been, how lucky they all got that no one died. “I’m really glad you didn’t die, Merri.” He tells her earnestly. When she thanks him, he shakes his head. “You don’t have to thank me for helping Kelly save people.” It felt natural for him to do so, honestly, to be in the clinic helping people.

Merri nods. “That’s the spirit,” she says. “Alright, let’s do this. I think it’s downstairs? The box is in our basement at home.”
Gordie nods. “Probably. It seems like the most likely place for it to be.” He says, getting up off the couch.
mvndrvke:
“Have you ever tried to fix a fuse box?” Merri looks around before she nods. “I mean it’s worth a try, right? I know a bit about this kinda’ thing, but not a ton, so I guess if I get electrocuted…. I don’t know, remember me fondly?”
Gordie shakes his head. “No, but I figured that turning it back on can’t be that difficult.” He says simply. “And if it really is blown and won’t just turn on from a restart, well, at least we can say we tried and actually work towards finding a manual or something to fix it.”
mvndrvke:
“Ah, that makes sense. Thanksgiving might be the least weird thing I’ve been to since this all started, I mean loud holidays are kinda’ a staple of my family.”
“That’s fair enough. My Thanksgivings are usually not that eventful. Not even close.” He chuckled, then went solemn and looked at her. “I actually didn’t sleep even after everyone got better and went home. I stayed up.”
