AU where Dohna joins Zelda during her adventure and falls in love || 1.2k words
Dohna is no stranger to danger. As a captain, she has endured tremendous trials, has seen desert sand harden with blood, is familiar with the sting of dust and pebbles digging into cuts, muscles straining through exhaustion as her hands grow calloused with each battle.
She took on each challenge with the bravery needed to lead her people, determined to earn her right to be called a leader and trusted comrade. She wants to make her mothers’ proud, her people proud. She wants to be a pillar of hope in times of need, her sisters knowing they can look to her for guidance and support.
This is something she prides herself on, and something she sees within Zelda. The princess not only fought with something to prove, but with the understanding of everything that is at risk. To be a warrior is to risk yourself for the safety of others, so of course, Dohna asks Zelda if she can join her on her travels.
After all, who will look after Zelda? Dohna is not blind to the loneliness that clings to the Hylian, not as she hides her identity with her head tilted down and shoulders curled in.
—
It’s midnight when Dohna realizes her attachment towards Zelda might be more than platonic. Zelda is beautiful; this is something that is cemented in Hyrulian Legends. There is something otherworldly about Zelda, graceful and refined. These are the words echoed throughout Hyrule, painting a glorified image of who the princess ought to be.
But the Zelda Dohna travels with is anything but this. Yes, she is brilliant in every way Dohna considers important. But graceful and refined, she is not. The princess is clumsy, unfamiliar with her staff and the placement of her feet when staring down opponents. She’s impulsive, and while this can lead to her passionate rants about Tri’s powers and their potential for the rest of the kingdom, it also means she’s hasty.
She’s dirty, with matted blond hair and dirt on her cheek and stains on her clothes. There’s nothing graceful or refined about Hyrule’s princess as they travel in secret, hiding from guards and monsters alike. But her love for her kingdom, her determination to save everyone, the cleverness that shows during combat, and the stories she brings back of the dungeons she explores.
Oh, how could Dohna not love her? How could she not adore this warrior, this protector? This princess, who has stepped beyond her role, where she could have easily hidden in the castle in hopes of someone else saving the kingdom, Zelda never hesitated to take that dark cloak and magic rod, and rushed to every rift whispered by each person they met. Zelda’s smile wanes sometimes when she struggles to fit into a confident persona.
But her hazel eyes, with their stubborn glint, Dohna knows without a doubt. Everything will be alright. Zelda will make sure of it. And Tri, whom Dohna cannot see, but hears in fits of bells and twinkles, gives the captain hope.
—
Dohna used to be fascinated with the rest of Hyrule. Isolated, the Gerudo are; all she has known is the browns and oranges of her homeland: the dusty storms that blind fools who walk through them, the orange sun and its blazing heat, and the cooling crescendo of ancient canyons that guard their land.
But in Hyrule, everything is green. The grass is bright even in the summer, with dew clinging though every morning sprinkle. It’s beautiful, the emerald contrast to Zelda’s pink shirt, the fresh earth staining white trousers whenever the princess rushes to capture a new echo.
Sometimes, Dohna fantasizes about how Zelda would look lying against the ground. Her yellow hair haloed against the rural land, shirt hiked up to peek against the silver of skin, thighs parted as her breathes grow heavy, pink flush highlighting the blue in her eyes. Blue as the sky, blue as the royal colors that Zelda prides herself on.
She fantasizes about how Zelda would taste, how she would feel. She wants Zelda to breathe out her name, a want that is mutual and feverish to the skin.
But it is not the time for such images or desires. They have a kingdom to save. What comes after, only Dohna can hope for.
—
Their journey is an ugly one. The suffering they witness, the lives and dreams stolen within a blink.
It’s a cruel reminder of how fast things can go wrong. But Dohna swore she would protect Zelda. It’s a promise she doesn’t intend to fail.
—
When Dohna opens her eyes, the first thing she registers is something wet sliding down her cheeks. The second thing is lips on hers, sobs muffled as a hand clutches her tunic. The third thing becomes the most pressing, and it’s pain that throbs and builds up in her torso and towards her ribs.
Her hand twitches with a hitch in her breath, and Zelda pulls herself away. Her lips thin, brows furrowing, and Dohna slowly brings her hand up to wipe the pitiful tears away.
“Why would you do that?” Zelda trembles out, green and blue eyes clashing in brightness, and Dohna softens at the sight of the beauty they hold. “You, I’m not weak Dohna! I could— I saw the spear.”
Dohna clings to Zelda’s hands, who has still not let go of her tunic. She rubs circles into the knuckles, ignoring the red that stains them, breathing deeply as the ache in her ribs ebbs away, as healing magic knits the wound together again. It still might scar, a measly one to join the others.
She wants to say the need to jump was instinct. That she would do it, again and again, until they part at the end of this journey. And even then, the urge to protect Zelda will always be there, a flower waiting to bloom.
Instead, what comes out is, “You kissed me?”
The sounds of bells circle Dohna’s head, and Zelda glares in Tri’s direction before looking back to Dohna. Her hands shake, kept still only because Dohna refuses to let go. “Am I dreaming?”
Zelda huffs. “No, you are not.” She softens, a hand moving to cup Dohna’s cheek. Her palm is rough from developing calluses, but the grip is soft and gentle, and Dohna sinks into the familiar feeling of being held safe within those pale arms.
“I’m still upset at you,” Zelda grumbles, and Dohna smiles at the care in her eyes.
“Too upset at giving me one more kiss?” Dohna teases, getting up to lean on one arm, wincing as the movement still jostles her healing wound.
Zelda smiles, a small one. But Dohna still brightens at the lovely sight. “One more, and then we need to head back to Kakariko.”
Dohna grumbles at the words, but knowing it would still be wise for someone to look over and check nothing was damaged internally. There is only so much Zelda’s smoothies can do for healing. At least until they are able to get more materials with stronger properties.
Zelda sighs into her mouth when Dohna tugs her over, a hand tangled in short red hair and the other cupping her cheek. It’s soft and lingering, and it’s everything Dohna has dreamed of.
